England’s women may have won the World Cup they hosted in 2017, but it took until 2021 for the game to explode.
For all the rancour around The Hundred, no one can argue with the huge boost it has given to women’s cricket in this country. Massive attendances, a new TV audience, stars created. Oval Invincibles were worthy winners.
For England, Covid delayed the defence of that World Cup until next year, meaning 2022 is going to be stellar.
The Ashes, World Cup and Commonwealth Games provides the opportunity for a unique treble.
We're moments away from finding out the winner of BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2021.
First, over on BBC One, it's time to reflect on those who passed away during the past 12 months.

England’s story of 2021 is not yet done, with it looking very likely that the Ashes will be lost before the year is out.
That would cap a miserable 12 months that began with the optimism of three successive Test wins in Sri Lanka and India, but has yielded only one win since.
If winning the Ashes is one missed objective, so too was lifting the T20 World Cup, only for an injury-hit team to fall in the semi-finals. They will come again in Australia next year.
Away from England, India stunned Australia in January. Domestically, Warwickshire were crowned county champions and Southern Brave were inaugural Hundred champions.
However, perhaps the biggest impact on the game was the words of Azeem Rafiq, the influence of which will be felt for many years to come.
Here's BBC Radio 1 presenter Greg James, over on BBC One, to take us through what's been happening in the world of cricket this year now.

Coach of the Year Gareth Southgate speaking to BBC One: "I know a lot of the coaches there [other nominees] are outstanding, we've got some brilliant talent in this country.
"Managing in football now is a very complex business. I'm very fortunate, I work with some very good people and they make it much easier for me."
England midfielder Jude Bellingham, on Southgate: "Gareth's man-management is brilliant. He makes you feel part of the squad. You always feel like there's a challenge, you always feel loved, and there are people in place to support you."
This is the second time England manager Gareth Southgate has been named Coach of the Year, having first won the award in 2018.
That year, he led England to the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in 28 years.
In 2021, Southgate's Three Lions went one better, reaching their first major final for 55 years.
Manager since September 2016, it is the 2022 World Cup next for his side.
England manager Gareth Southgate!
And the Coach of the Year award goes to...
England reached the final of Euro 2020 at Wembley in July, where they lost to Italy on penalties.
But in reaching that stage of the tournament, the Three Lions ended a 55-year wait for a major final - stretching back to the 1966 World Cup triumph.
The defeat by Italy in the Euros final was England's only loss in 2021.
The 2021 Team of the Year is...
The England men's football team!
It's now time to reveal the Team of the Year, and Coach of the Year.

Women’s Rugby in the home nations had an unexpected boost following the pandemic. The Women’s Six Nations was postponed and put into a new Spring window, enjoying better exposure and TV viewing figures. The result of its success means the competition remains in the new window for 2022, away from the shadow of the men's game.
England's women dominated the headlines having completed an 18-game unbeaten run. Wins in the Autumn over World Champions New Zealand along with the USA and Canada saw lock Zoe Aldcroft named World Rugby Player of the Year and Simon Middleton, Coach of the Year.
Wales women have been boosted following the news of the introduction of professional and semi-professional contracts in the New Year, while Scotland beat Ireland in a nail-biting World Cup qualification match that gives them one last shot of making it to the New Zealand show piece next year.
However, the fall out in Ireland has been seismic, with 62 international players past and present writing to their government having “lost faith” in how the IRFU is running women’s rugby in Ireland.

Here's Rachael Blackmore's reaction on BBC One after being awarded World Sport Star of the Year: "My dreams were so big, but [this year] far surpassed anything I could have every imagined.
"The reaction has been brilliant, I feel very privileged to have had the year I've had.
"The Grand National was incredible, I felt like I was exactly where i wanted to be. You need a lot of things to fall into place for that to happen."
On being voted World Sport Star of the Year: "Unbelievable! The support has been incredible. I got such a kick out of being on that lost of nominees. This is just incredible, it's overwhelming to think I've just been given an award after Simone Biles got one."

It has been an historic year for St Helens - both the men’s and women’s teams.
Kristian Woolf’s men’s side lifted the Challenge Cup trophy in July, beating Castleford at Wembley in the 120th Cup Final. They also won the Super League title for a third successive year, after a hard-fought Grand Final against Catalans Dragons at Old Trafford in October.
But the Saints' women’s side went one better with a treble of Cup, League Leaders Shield and Grand Final success.
2021 will also be remembered as a fantastic year for French Rugby League. Catalans won the League Leaders Shield, a first for a non-English club. Toulouse will join them in Super League next year after promotion from the Championship.
The biggest disappointment was the postponement of the Rugby League World Cup - due to be played in October and November - after the withdrawal of Australia and New Zealand, who cited Covid concerns. That tournament, featuring men’s, women’s and wheelchair events, will now take place in 2022, with much the same schedule. It kicks off with England’s men playing Samoa at Newcastle’s St James Park on Saturday, 15th October.
How exciting. But while we await the result of the public vote, there are still a few more awards to hand out...
