All that hard work is in danger of being undone as Murray finds himself three break points down in his first service game of the second set. He saves the first, and the second, and the third, courtesy of a bold and brave backhand down the line from Murray. Deuce. And deuce again.

Murray slips as he hits a forehand error and it's a fourth break point of the game for Federer. The Swiss dumps a backhand into the net and lets out a sigh. Eight more deuces - which include one breathtaking rally of 22 shots and a further two break points for Federer - follow in this marathon game, which lasts 19 minutes, before Murray converts game point, on the 11th deuce, to seal the hold.

"Murray found it, but perhaps more significantly Federer lost it. There was just a reminder there of the Federer we saw last year that can buckle, the Federer we never saw in 2006. Roger Federer should have won that in straight sets."

Murray does what he needs to do, holding both his serves to reduce the deficit to 5-4 but Federer brings up two match points as a Murray return goes long. Gutsy play from Murray, holding in there with some heavy hitting and forcing the Federer mistake, and then remarkably, he forces another error from the Swiss' racquet and we're back level at 6-6 at the second change of ends.

  8. TIE-BREAK UPDATEpublished at 10:53 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2014

Excellent stuff from both Murray and Federer early in this tie-break to bring up 2-2, but it's the Briton who breaks down first. Federer secures the first mini-break and Murray smashes his hand against his racquet strings in frustration. Federer, who is becoming more defensive as the finish line approaches, consolidates the mini-break. Federer leads 4-2 at the change of ends after Murray goes long again.

I'm not sure you can call it a momentum change, but Murray has certainly upped his intensity. The Scot clenches his fist every time he wins a point on his serve, and he's winning a fair few of them now. His girlfriend Kim Sears is on her feet in the stands and there's clapping all round as Murray seals his hold to 15.
