Murray is really struggling to hold on to Federer here. The Scot removes his cap and wipes his brow as he finds himself break point down for the second time in the match. It's a decent serve, but Murray then sends a backhand ailing long to gift Federer the break. Oh dear.

Murray carves out his first real opening of the match with 15-30, but Federer takes Murray's return so early, the Scot has no chances of scrambling across the court to retrieve it. A tasty serve, which hits the right corner, brings up game point before a simple forehand closes it out. Murray places his racquet up to his mouth and grimaces.

It's a great approach from Murray, who is trying to be more aggressive in the second set, but he's left deflated as Federer rustles up a forehand passing shot, of the highest quality, down the line and on the stretch. Still, Murray is ultimately rewarded with the game as Federer dumps a forehand into the net.

Federer is taking a whopping 89% of points on his first serve at the moment, in comparison to 69% for Murray, and that formidable form continues in his first service game of the second set as he comfortably holds.

Murray exhales a deep breath and raises his shoulders slightly, as if to say he doesn't quite know what to do. Another mishit backhand is eaten up by Federer to bring up 30-30.

But then comes the best and longest rally of the match - at 23 shots - which sees both players scrambling and battling to wrestle control of the point.

Murray reaches for a backhand volley, and makes it, before heaping the pressure back on Federer. Eventually, it's the Swiss who breaks down, and Murray takes the next to seal the game. Big point. Big hold.

"Another wonderful set of tennis from Federer, who missed two first serves in his opening four service games, which didn't leave much for Murray to go at. Half an hour gone and Rod Laver Arena is still filling up with latecomers, who were taking a bit of a risk. Federer isn't hanging about."

  13. GAME AND FIRST SETpublished at 09:12 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2014

This is a new Roger Federer which we're witnessing right here. The Swiss is doing all the hitting and utterly dominating the points. That's encapsulated in the third point when he follows up a couple of heavy groundstrokes with a blistering forehand crosscourt winner.

His forehand, which is working an absolute treat, helps him seal the game - and the set - to love. Marvellous tennis from the 17-time Grand Slam champion.

Federer has been to the net 12 times already and the match is a little over 20 minutes old. But it's working. Murray gives himself a chance with a stretching crosscourt backhand winner, which Federer can only watch sail by, but Federer hits straight back with a stunning drop volley. And it's that booming forehand of Federer's that helps him kill off the game.
