There will be more live text commentary on Wednesday as Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic make an appearance. Until tomorrow...

"I've been moving fairly well the last couple of weeks," Murray tells ITV Sport. "It's tricky, you want to dictate as many points as you can but when it's breezy it's tricky to stick to your tactics."

Murray slowly departs from the court, adding his autograph to whatever fans put in front of him. It was his first win at Roland Garros since 2012, after he missed last year because of a back injury.

His next opponent will be Australia's Marinko Matosevic or Dustin Brown of Germany in round two.

Asked whether he has found a new coach, Murray responds: "I'm trying but not many people want to work with me so it's not that easy. Hopefully soon."

"That started to get dangerous, even in that fourth set, for Andy but he did well to finish it off in that last service game. Overall, that was a good performance from Andy. He has had lots of things going on this year - with his back, looking for a new coach - and this was his first match of the tournament, against a tough opponent who is unpredictable so I think it's a good match for him. He's got a day off tomorrow and then he can start preparing for his next match."

As soon as he finishes throwing a couple of sweaty wristbands towards a grateful crowd, Murray must face an inquisition.

"He's a tough player, he's extremely aggressive and puts you on the back foot really early," says Murray. "It was windy, especially at the beginning. I didn't go for my shots too much, I just tired to be patient."

  7. GAME, SET AND MATCHpublished at 17:11 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

Warm applause for Murray as he prepares to serve for the match. No sign of nerves as he launches down his fifth ace of the match to go 30-0 up. A dodgy Golubev return and it's three match points.

The terrier-like Golubev forcing Murray to wait for his victory celebration, lasering home a volley for 40-15. A botched forehand from Murray and it's 40-30. Surely there will be no slip up from here? Of course not. A first serve into the rib cage and Golubev goes long.

Can Golubev squeeze a few more games out of this match? He forces Murray to serve out for the match, at least, with some crisp serving.

Murray is penalised for a foot fault and the puzzled Scot inspects the ground, as if the clay was to blame for a routine error. It's a routine hold for Murray, too. The one-time French Open semi-finalist a game away from victory.

  11. *Murray 6-1 6-4 3-6 4-2 Golubevpublished at 17:04 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

Sharp shooting from Murray, the Scot shuffling back a few steps before pouncing on Golubev's serve with a rasping return. The 26-year-old holds firm, however, despite Murray's best attempts to pulverise him from the baseline, and lives on for a few more games at least.

  12. Murray 6-1 6-4 3-6 4-1 Golubev*published at 16:59 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

A comfortable hold to 30 for Murray, though it wasn't without blips. The Scot on the home straight and heading to the second round.

  13. *Murray 6-1 6-4 3-6 3-1 Golubevpublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

Magnifique from Murray. Naturellement. The Scot stretches every sinew to fetch a Golubev forehand and returns with gusto - flicking a crosscourt backhand winner for a break point. The crowd roar their approval, but the seventh seed is unable to capitalise on that moment of improvisation and lets Golubev off the hook.

  14. Murray 6-1 6-4 3-6 3-0 Golubev*published at 16:50 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

A third ace of the match improves Murray's first serve statistics and eases him to 30-15, but Golubev is capable of producing magnificent winners. The Kazakh nicks one point with a single-handed backhand down the line, but that same shot gets him into trouble on the next point and Murray holds to 30.

Murray has played Golubev on two previous occasions, once in St Petersburg in 2008 and again in 2010 in the Hopman Cup. The Briton won on those two occasions and should do so again today, but danger still lurks on the other side of the net.

Soft hands from Golubev once more as he places a drop shot beyond his opponent for 15-30. Delicate drop shots will only get a player so far, though, and Murray accumulates double break points.

A humdinger of a first serve. One break point saved. Another cute drop shot. Second break point saved, and a thumbs up from Murray. A third break point for Murray and how many tricks can Golubev pull out of the hat? Ah, there's no rabbit this time, a netted backhand and Murray is ahead.

"A first-serve percentage of 41% got Murray in all sorts of trouble in that third set, and Golubev managed to cut the deficit between winners and errors (11-14) sufficiently to get over the line. Murray just needs to go up a gear or two to see this out, but if not he could be dragged into another thriller on this day of surprises."

  17. Murray 6-1 6-4 3-6 1-0 Golubev*published at 16:41 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

The match enters its third hour, which is longer than many would have predicted. Djokovic-esque from Goulbev as he returns like lightening for 40-30, but Murray holds little fuss. On to the next game we go.

  18. GAME AND THIRD SETpublished at 16:35 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

The question is: can Golubev hold his nerve? At 15-15 questions are asked of the Kazah, but a sublime irretrievable volley takes the world number 53 to within a point of the set. Can Murray muster a fightback from here? Nope. A scrambled forehand goes long and we're into a fourth set.

  19. Murray 6-1 6-4 3-5 Golubev*published at 16:33 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

Murray, who broke in the opening game of this set, is now serving to stay in the set. His first serve percentage in this set has dipped to the low 30s, which perhaps tells us where the problem lies.

The Wimbledon champion looks comfortable at 40-0, but Golubev proceeds to within touching distance at 40-30. The Scot's first serve is on song for the next point, though, and Golubev's return drifts wide.

"I'm a bit baffled by the score in this set. Andy is sitting down at the changeover and having a conversation with himself. He is obviously frustrated and not happy with what's going on. He just needs to keep his cool and not let it get to him."
