  1. *Murray 6-1 6-4 2-5 Golubevpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

Momentum flowing this way and that, it's enough to make a live texter giddy, but it's Golubev who is firmly in the driving seat in this set, comfortably holding to inch to within a game of ruffling Murray's feathers.

  2. Golubev breakspublished at 16:27 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

The crowd rooting for the underdog and they break out into an 'ooh' of disappointment as Golubev ends a lengthy rally by a netting a backhand for 15-15.

Boom! Golubev takes his frustrations out on a Murray first serve to skip to 15-30, but on the following point the uneven surface causes the fluffy yellow ball to bounce like a rugby ball and Golubev is the man who suffers.

For those of you interested in such things, the score progresses from 30-30 to 40-30 and then to deuce - Golubev's beautiful single-handed backhand down the line the highlight in the middle of that play.

Break point Golubev and the pair are playing cat and mouse. Golubev upping the ante, pinning Murray back and the Scot has no response. Oh my giddy aunt.

This isn't the script many would have written and Murray's girlfriend, Kim Sears, wearing a beige rain coat, looks a tad nonplussed. "You might be wearing a radioactive yellow t-shirt, Andy," she says to herself, "but you're far from dazzling us at the moment."

As soon as those words are uttered, and they were uttered, Murray earns himself a break back point and the sun comes out! And it's the most timid of endings as Golubev double faults.

  4. Golubev breakspublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

At 15-30 Murray looks to be in a spot of bother, but there's no real cause for concern as his backhand gets in out of trouble. Oh, but Golubev now has Murray desperately defending from the baseline... An overhead from Golubev... Murray attempts to fetch it... he's sprinting, he's chasing, but ultimately fails. Break point Golubev.

Murray, though, comes through that mini test and the pair tease us all at deuce and advantage until Golubev earns a second break point and Murray's response is a double fault. Hmm.

Laura Lambert:, external Brilliant stuff from Murray. This is one of the best openings to a Grand Slam campaign I've seen from him.

Robin Armstrong:, external All too often Andy nods off after a straight forward first set. He loses his serve way too often against lower ranked players.

  6. *Murray 6-1 6-4 1-2 Golubevpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

A dark cloud is looming over Murray as he watches Golubev canter to a 40-0 lead. The Kazakh, though, is as ruthless as Bambi and sometimes he glides to the net like a certain saucer-eyed dear on ice. Twice he falters at the net to give Murray a sliver of hope and one wild backhand later takes the game to deuce.

Golubev saves a break point, however, and scrambles free as Murray can only hook a return into the cheap seats.

Oof. That's ugly. Golubev has the chance to amass three break points but he lacks composure at the net, slapping a gettable volley into the tape when the court was all his.

Sloppy from Murray, a forehand going long, and the Scot is angry with himself. "Every time," he mutters, knowing he must defend two break points. Again, though, Golubev squanders a great chance - plonking a straightforward volley into the net. But Murray is also guilty of clumsy play and slaps a forehand volley into the barrier.

  8. Murray breakspublished at 15:57 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

First break point of the set to Murray, but the following point is an error-strewn one from both players. An iffy first serve, followed by a rash return from Murray as he attempts to eat up the slower second serve.

At deuce, Murray sends his opponent running from tramline to tramline, waiting for him to error, which he does by going long. Second break point Murray and Golubev's resistance is made of rice paper. A clench of the fist from the Scot who cruising on his final lap.

"It was another good set for Murray. Golubev had his chances, but he made some easy mistakes on the big points. It's going to be tough for him to come back from this."

"Murray is safely on course to round two as Golubev continues to match every flashing winner with two off the frame. The Wimbledon champion is having as much difficulty dealing with the high-wire camera which swoops from end to end between games, apparently in the his eye line."

  11. GAME AND SECOND SETpublished at 15:49 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

The pair open with a brutal 18-shot rally, which goes Golubev's way. Murray responds with an ace but his opponent is like a pesky bumblebee hovering over a picnic, refusing to slip away quietly.

The Kazakh's forehand is a potent weapon, sending Murray lunging in vain but the Scot eventually reaches set point and over the line he goes, with Golubev netting a simple forehand when the court was at his mercy.

First signs of Murray muttering to himself as he allows Golubev off the hook at 30-30, but a good talking to is perhaps what the Scot needed. Murray targeting Golubev from the baseline and the Kazakh can't quite move his feet in unison and balloons a forehand over the baseline for deuce.

The Wimbledon champion has upped the tempo, he has break point and Golubev gifts him the chance to serve for the set, as he fails to negotiate the barrier. The lead regained. Composure regained.

  13. Golubev breakspublished at 15:41 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

A frustrated groan from Golubev as he lets a 15-30 advantage slip to 30-30 courtesy of a lame netted forehand. Murray, though, going through one of his dips, someone seems to have turned off the seventh seed's switch, and the Brit must defend a break point. A crescendo of applause ripples around Lenglen, though it's unclear whether they're encouraging the underdog or attempting to boost Murray's spirits. A Murray forehand goes long and parity is, surprisingly, restored!

  14. *Murray 6-1 4-3 Golubevpublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

The 26-year-old Golubev refusing to roll over. He has some fight left in him and he impressively holds to love. In other matters, Caroline Wozniacki has won the second set against Yanina Wickmayer so that match will be decided in the third.

But it turns out that was his pre-match meal, which is very different to the players."

  16. Murray 6-1 4-2 Golubev*published at 15:33 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

Golubev running out of patience, netting an attempted return winner. It seems too easy for Murray, although he is guilty of slapping a simple forehand into the tape. The intensity has dropped, there's a hush around Lenglen. Murray holds to 30 but gets little reaction from the crowd.

Murray bouncing on the baseline, wide-eyed as he looks across to the other side of the net with two break points in his pocket, it's as if he's saying to Golubev "give me all you've got, punk." Golubev doesn't put up too much resistance and the Kazak is creaking like and old ship.

  18. Murray 6-1 2-2 Golubev*published at 15:26 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

A group of spectators screech as they watch Golubev sprinting like a panther towards the net only to blaze his volley into the tramlines. They thought they were going to witness a moment of magic. They thought that would be the turning point. It wasn't. The Kazak sows seeds of doubt at 30-30, but poses no real threat.

"Lenglen can be one of the liveliest courts among the four Grand Slams, especially when there are French players on view, but the gentle hum of chatter is more akin to Wimbledon right now as Murray rolls on with little fuss. The blankets are out in the VIP box and a couple of chins are drooping suspiciously. An afternoon nap, maybe?"

  20. *Murray 6-1 1-2 Golubevpublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

Golubev has a sculptors touch, reeling off consecutive deft drop shots for a 30-0 lead. The Kazak goes on to hold to love, puffing his cheeks out as he makes his way back for the changeover. The underdog working hard, but getting his rewards in this set.
