It's lucky number 11 for Watson, who has now won 11 matches this month alone following victory at the Prague Open. Things will get tougher from here on in, though, as the 22-year-old will next face Romanian fourth seed Simona Halep - a semi-finalist last year. Gulp.

"There were a lot of very solid skills on show, the mentality was good, Zahalova asked a lot of questions of her game, but Watson stayed positive. She responded in that last deuce with some really good serving. that's the indication of a woman who can take the pressure."

"When you have been in that tortuous position of seeing your ranking fall away, when you then have these moments, you can appreciate them all the more. You can see it meant a lot to her. It must be her first Grand Slam win since the illness. It's been a tough road back, She has developed her game in a courageous manner."

All Watson has to do is hold serve in front of a few hundred people, and a handful of photographers and cameramen, but anxiety grips the Brit. Watson cautiously approaches the net and watches a Zahlavova forehand winner fly by for a nervy opening. The British number two falls 15-30 behind, but Zahlavova cannot turn the screw and the Czech proceeds to net a straightforward forehand to present Watson with match point. It's an opportunity missed by Watson. A second match point, a third match point - and eventually victory is hers as Zahlavova fails to negotiate the barrier.

Zahlavova refuses to make life easy for Watson and the Czech, for once, keeps her cool to comfortably hold to love, ensuring Watson must serve out for the match.

  14. Watson 6-3 5-3 Zahlavova*published at 11:38 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

Watson counter-punching from the net - a volley, an overhead, then another volley before her rival is finally beaten. Zahlavova responds by punishing a meek Watson second serve, but the Czech cannot maintain such high standards, spraying her groundstrokes out of play and Watson holds to 15.

  15. Watson breakspublished at 11:34 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

Wonderful defending from Watson, a lob forcing her opponent to backpedal and the Czech crumbles like a chocolate flake. Zahlavova, frothing at the mouth, exchanges words with the umpire but it does her no good as Watson easily collects double break points. Trumpets playing in the background and there could soon be fanfare for the Brit as Zahlavova's forehand drifts wide, putting Watson firmly in the driving seat.

  16. Watson 6-3 3-3 Zahlavova*published at 11:30 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

A beautifully-crafted opening point from Watson, finished with a sliced drop shot. Another irritable monologue from the combustible Zahlavova, and this time she kicks the red dirt in frustration, too. No-one say a word, just let her get it all out.

The world number 63 feels things aren't going her way, and they aren't really as a humdinger of an ace out to the wings takes the score to 40-15 and Watson, oozing confidence, concludes the game with a fabulous backhand down the line.

  17. *Watson 6-3 2-3 Zahlavovapublished at 11:24 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

The pendulum swinging this way and that but, for the majority of this match, Watson's game has been the more solid and reliable. Zahlavova again in iffy territory, losing the opening two points, but she drags herself back into contention, lobbing a stranded Watson for 30-30. The Czech's supporters chant their approval, but Watson rallies and gobbles up a poor first serve for a break point but the Brit is as ruthless as a dormouse in this game, netting on three occasions to allow her rival to skip ahead for the first time in the set.

  18. Zahlavova breaks backpublished at 11:19 British Summer Time 27 May 2014

The match enters its second hour and a fine volley from Zahlavova sets her up nicely to steal a point and go 15-30 up, but those moments of magic are rare from the Czech and on the following point she messes up again, punching the air in frustration and shouting towards her hubby as the score progresses to 30-30. From bad to worse for Zahlalova as she squanders a break point, but she's soon on the up again - a deft drop shot for second break point and Watson creaks, screwing a backhand wide.

Romania's Simona Halep needed just over an hour to see off Russian Alisa Kleybanova for the loss of just two games and set up a second-round match against either Heather Watson or Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.

Elsewhere, Chinese second seed Li Na is locked at 5-5 in the first set of her first-round contest with Kristina Mladenovic of France.

And 43-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan, who made her Roland Garros main draw debut in 1989, is rolling back the years and fighting back against 24th-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, winning the second set 6-0 to force a decider.

Zahlavova manages to put her troubles behind her, for this game at least, racing to a 40-0 lead and securing a hold to 15 with a smart serve volley. Watson still in control of her own destiny, though.
