So Andy Murray's quest to improve on his career-best Roland Garros performance of a semi-final - in 2011 where he lost to Rafael Nadal - continues.

He made life harder for himself in the third set, but will nonetheless be delighted with not only the victory but that he kept his time on court to under three hours after a busy few days.

Next up is Gael Monfils on Wednesday in the quarter-finals. But before that, we've got four quarter-finals to look forward to tomorrow. Until then, it's good night from me.

Tomorrow, Garbine Muguruza - who beat Serena Williams - takes on 2012 French Open champion Maria Sharapova in the first match on Philippe Chatrier at 13:00 BST. Second seed Novak Djokovic follows in his quarter-final against Milos Raonic of Canada.

Over on Suzanne Lenglen, 14th seed Carla Suarez Navarro takes on 18th seed Eugenie Bouchard while sixth seed Tomas Berdych plays Ernests Gulbis, the 18th seed in the second match.

So that brings to an end our coverage for the day. It's been largely business as usual for most, with top seed Rafael Nadal, fourth seed Simona Halep, fifth seed David Ferrer and seventh seed Andy Murray all progressing to the quarter-finals. The only blip was sixth seed Jelena Jankovic's defeat to 10th seed Sara Errani.

"I was trying to play more aggressively because I knew I was going to be tired in my legs. I am laughing at myself most of the time rather than smiling, but I love it here."

Murray holds his second serve to go 4-3 up and then sends a cheeky loopy return that sits up for Verdasco. The Spaniard can't deal with it and send the shot long. The mini-break is restored.

Murray sticks with the loopy ball tactic, sending another one, laced with topspin, back at Verdasco. Once again, the Spaniard fails to deal with it and it's three match points for Murray. He only needs the first, sealing the match with a stunning smash.

It's a beautiful drop shot from Murray, who follows it up and covers the backhand volley to bring up 40-0. But once again, he can't close it out straight away. A loose backhand gifts Verdasco the next point but Murray is lucky in the next as the Spaniard's lob drifts just long. We're into a tie-break.

Murray has gone from in complete control of this set to serving to stay in the set. The Scot is gifted the first two points following errors from Verdasco and gets three game points after a lovely serve out wide.

However, Murray makes life hard for himself after putting a smash long and then following it up with another forehand error. "Yes," roars Murray as he watches a backhand error from Verdasco. We're back level.

Murray gives himself a good talking to as he scrambles to 30-30 on the Verdasco serve but he can do nothing about a thunderous ace from the Spaniard to bring up game point. Murray then sends a backhand long and that's the game done for Verdasco. The Spaniard looks really pumped, almost scary. It's inspired the crowd who are voicing their support for the players as they head for a sit down.

Murray facing the first bit of pressure on his serve for a while at 15-30 but he is gifted the next point courtesy of a Verdasco forehand error. But the Scot then throws in a double fault and it's break point Verdasco. Surely that act of sportsmanship won't come back to haunt you Andy?

It's a great serve from Murray, but Verdasco conjures up a wonderful cross-court forehand winner to break serve. Murray throws his racquet to the ground in frustration.
