"It's very strange tactics from Andy, I don't know why he has started hitting his backhand slice instead of just returning as he normally does."

Murray deals with some very loopy balls, laced with topspin, well before latching on one and firing a forehand down the line to bring up 0-30 on the Verdasco serve. The ball is well in but Verdasco gazes at the spot shouting something about something. The venting of frustration does the trick and the Spaniard pulls it back to 30-30 and then let's out a roar as he hammers a forehand cross-court winner to bring up game point. Unfortunately, he follows that point up with a forehand into net. Deuce.

Break point follows as a Verdasco forehand goes long. More frustration from Verdasco, this time in the direction of his coach. Murray can't take advantage, sending a forehand just long. Deuce. Verdasco clenches his fist as Murray tries a whip a forehand pass down the line, but it sails long. Game point and it's converted as Murray dumps his return in the net. Big hold for Verdasco.

Sam Samet: It's a great game so far, delighted Murray's winning, but if he's going to win any of these games he's going to have to improve massively on his first serves!

Darren: Dave-O: 'Heartbreak' and 'Andy Murray' go together - so do 'multiple grand slam winner' and 'Andy Murray'.

Big point for both as Murray gets to 30-15 on the Verdasco serve and it's the Spaniard who wins it. Murray then hits a poor drop shot that Verdasco scoops up and away for a winner. A backhand return ends up in the net on the next and it's game Verdasco. Big opportunity missed for Murray there.

Verdasco has yet to figure out the Murray gameplan, first watching on as Murray launchers a backhand down the line and then left frustrated as he fails to deal with a low ball to his backhand. Before he knows it, Murray has a game point and he converts it, latching onto a short, high ball to close it out.

"Andy needs to be careful not to get sucked into playing Verdasco's Spanish style of game. He needs to play his own game, taking the ball early and being aggressive."

It's a comfortable service game for Verdasco for a change, the Spaniard losing just one point. Murray heads for his chair and gives himself a good talking to on his way.

A second ace of the match and a crunching forehand down the line brings up 40-0 for Murray. The Scot tries for a bit too much on an inside out forehand and it lands plump in the tramlines, however, it's a momentary blip in an otherwise faultless game for Murray as he watches a Verdasco return land in the net. We're back level.

Verdasco's first serve is woeful in this game and that forces the Spaniard onto his back-foot early in the rallies. Murray gives himself a chance at 30-15 and is rewarded with a break point when Verdasco goes long. The Spaniard keeps sending the ball to Murray's backhand, a tactic which works as it eventually breaks down to bring up deuce. Game point follows and Verdasco converts it as Murray dumps a cross-court backhand into the net.

Murray wastes little time in reach 40-0 on serve, but he lets his guard down and throws in a couple of unforced errors and suddenly he's at deuce. The Scot is gifted his fourth game point when Verdasco does nothing with the return on the second serve, but another unforced error - his 21st of the match - brings up deuce. Another game point follows. And at the fifth time of asking, he takes it.

John McEnerney:, external AM always does it the hard way in these early rounds where Nadal & Djokovic just swat away opponents & get the job done.

Daily Mail tennis correspondent Mike Dickson: "He got a bit of help there, some really wild forehands at the end from Verdasco (pictured). I thought the body language from Verdasco was looking slightly encouraging for Murray, he was right in the set and it will be enormously frustrating for him to be behind."

This time, he drives a forehand into the corner and Verdasco can't keep it in play. "Come on," roars Murray. Verdasco throws the spare ball away in frustration. Murray breaks.
