"That is what it's all about from Serena Williams. She came over and waited for Cornet for them to leave the court together. That is the mark of a true, true champion. Wonderful sportsmanship.

"Cornet didn't quite know what to do with herself after winning. There has been a lot of rain today but that was worth the wait. What an upset. You don't always get to see the true emotion of players but there we did. It was an absolute privilege to witness that."

Speaking to BBC Sport following her 1-6 6-3 6-4 win over Serena Williams: "I just cannot believe it. Three years ago I couldn't play on grass, I was so bad but now I have beaten Serena, the world number one on her own court.

"I have to get used to it and focus on the next match because the tournament is not over for me. I am not sure how I did it but just with the heart and the help from the crowd. She helped me a bit too because she made two big mistakes because I think she was nervous too.

"It is the biggest shock of the tournament because she is the world number one and I still can't believe I did it, me! I am loving it here in London."

"What a performance. She believed she could do and she brings down the champion here. Serena Williams showing her classed there by waiting for her opponent to walk off the court. They don't have to do it but it is encouraged.

"This was a shocker, particular after the rain delay, Serena was very nervous but when they came out again she was all guns blazing and took the first set but something switched on in Cornet and it all changed.

"I thought 6-1 6-2 but Cornet obviously had a game plan and stuck to it."

Alize Cornet kisses the grass in delight, and just about manages to regather her composure for the netcord handshake. As soon as she is done pressing the flesh, Cornet is back bouncing across the Court One turf.

Serena sportingly waits for Cornet to finish her celebrations so that they can walk off together.

    Nice touch.

A squeal of delight and it comes with a French burr rather than an American twang.

Alize Cornet moves 30-0 up as Serena Williams mis-times a forehand. The American thumps her palm against the strings in frustration, fetches a new bat out of the bag, but it makes no difference.

A volley slips into the net when it should be the winner, and Williams folds out to love.

Serena Williams's serve is suddenly titanium-stiffened. Cornet can't make any sort of imprint on it.

The Frenchwoman will have another chance to serve out next. A real racquet trembler of a changeover first...

Serena Williams is suddenly snarling, tearing great strips off Alize Cornet's runt of a second serve.

The match is still teetering in the balance, a real 50:50 call by my reckoning even with Cornet still a break to the good.

Worth the wet wait Court One?

That is the question, Martina. Cornet is 0-30 down as I type, there might be more legs in this one...

"Cornet is looking the more positive both with her shots and body language, but Serena has been tentative, she is playing too far behind the baseline. Can Cornet keep her demons at bay or can Serena rise to the occasion and somehow see this match out?"

It is Alize Cornet who is playing with the experience and confidence of 17-time Grand Slam champion. Serena Williams is a bundle of yips.

Eugenie Bouchard is the only woman to make the last four of both the Australian and French Opens this year. She might add Wimbledon to that collection of semi-finals.

Alize Cornet or Serena Williams for her in the fourth round.

Serena Williams finds herself in a pickle at 15-40 down. A break now for Cornet could be curtains for the top seed.

Williams clambers out of the Branston, helped out by a horrible yank of a forehand from her French opponent.

There is a third break point from deuce. And another ugly miscue from Cornet. But fourth time is the charm, a deep forehand getting right up under Serena's grill.

Cornet just three solid service games away from victory. Don't put the champagne on ice just yet.

  17. Federer reactionpublished at 19:25 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Roger Federer on BBC Television: "I got off to a good start and broke right away. I stayed in control until midway through the third set when he had a couple of break points at 15-40. Next thing I had break points of my own and got them and served it out.

"I'm very pleased to keep moving on (through the draw). Last year I lost in the second round so I'm aware of the dangers of certain players on this surface. You are always worried about the first week. The grass plays different the second week, you can do a few different things according to the weather.

"I'm just happy to be into the second week. For me, it is now about maintaining a good level of play. I'm in pretty good shape right now - a few niggles but nothing that really worries me."

"You can just feel the urgency in Serena's strokes out there. I think the biggest drop-off in her game has been the second-serve percentage, but she is playing pretty well.

"It is not a horrible game by Serena but Cornet is taking it to her."

"What can you say? Well deserved for Federer. A standing ovation. Both Andy Murray and Federer have had an easier time than the other two contenders.

"That was even easier than I thought it was going to be. I'm not sure he did sweat. That's unbelievable! I would assume he would rather play Robredo even though he lost to him at the US Open last year. Janowicz (a semi-finalist last year) is unpredictable."
