"Can Heather go up another level in the women's game? She has to add to her game, she has to have more variety. You can't just bang balls from the baseline - if she does that she won't go much further. She hasn't got any variety today."

Groans all around Centre Court as Watson lets slip a golden opportunity to bring up break point by dumping a regulation backhand in the net. Kerber then cools serves out the game.

"If I could tell Watson anything right now it would be to move Kerber from side to side rather than get involved in a cross-court rally."

A warm round of applause for the players as they step onto court for this second set. Centre Court has started to fill back up again after the Nadal match, but I'm sensing some are keeping their powder dry until Federer makes his appearance after this match.

But for those who are in position, they've got plenty to cheer about as Watson moves to game point with a big forehand volley winner. She has made three approaches to the net and won the point each time.

Kerber forces deuce and deuce again. But a huge serve from Watson puts the German on her back-foot and the British number one calmly puts away the volley to seal the game.

  5. GAME AND FIRST SETpublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 26 June 2014

Watson makes some inroads on the Kerber serve, the British number one creating 30-30. But a forehand cross court drifts into the tramlines and then another down the line misses by a few centimetres. Kerber wins the set.

"That was much better from Heather. She also showed a bit more emotion. But I feel her game is at the same pace all the time. Players really have to mix it up. Drop shots. High balls. When you receive the same ball all the time that is what you want. Players are then in their comfort zone."

Watson gathers some momentum on her serve for the first time in the match and moves to 40-0 clear. She loses the next but a crunching forehand winner seals the game and her first service hold. Out comes the first fist pump. Hopefully that'll get her going.

"No matter what your strengths you have to work on your weaknesses and for Heather that is not being able to put a lot of pace on the shots, not being able to put them away. To do well in women's tennis these days you need to have some kind of finishing shot. You have to admire Heather for coming out this year with a different mindset, trying to be a bit more aggressive."

Kerber raises her hand in apology as a forehand clips the next to wrong-foot Watson. The Briton turns away and stares down at the strings on her racquet. Nothing is going her way at the moment. Another game slips by and Watson will serve to stay in the set.

Wildcard Nick Kyrgios of Australia saved nine match points to defeat 13th seed Richard Gasquet (FRA) 3-6 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 7-5 10-8 in the second round.

The highest number of match points known to have been saved by a winning singles player at Wimbledon is 11 in the first round of the women's singles in 1966, when Helga Schultze of Germany beat Janine Lieffrig of France 4-6 11-9 12-10.

We have found two other instances at a Slam of a player saving nine match points to win a match in the Open Era:

1995: Roland Garros, 3rd round: Chanda Rubin (USA) beat Jana Novotna (CZE) 7-6 (10-8) 4-6 8-6

    2004: Roland Garros, 1st round: Vince Spadea (USA) beat Florent Serra (FRA) 7-5 1-6 4-6 7-6 (9-7) 9-7

  11. Kerber breakspublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 26 June 2014

Watson continues to go for her shots, a glorious backhand winner pulling her back to 30-30 but two forehands drift just long and it's another break for Kerber. The Briton is on the ropes.

Kerber races to 40-0 on serve and though Watson wins the next, the German world number seven forces an error from her British opponent to secure the first service hold of the match.

A scare for Stan. Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan has pulled a set back on Wawrinka. The Swiss fifth seed leads 7-6 6-3 3-6.

  15. GAME, SET AND MATCHpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 26 June 2014

Carla Suarez Navarro, Spanish women's 15th seed, has gone from this year's competition, dumped out at the second round stage by Zarina Diyas.

More of a clay-court specialist, Suarez Navarro has in her career reached the last eight stage of every major other than Wimbledon. Diyas, from Kazakhstan, also managed to reach the third round of the Australian Open earlier this year. 2014 is turning into a good year for the world number 72.

  16. GAME, SET AND MATCHpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 26 June 2014

It's all over on Court Two where Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has triumphed in five sets for the second round on the bounce. The Frenchman has been on court on all four days of the tournament, having had two matches held over. Give the lad a rest.

  17. Kerber breakspublished at 16:25 British Summer Time 26 June 2014

Good fighting spirit from Watson out there, the Briton saving two break points to force deuce. Kerber gives herself another chance of a break with a punishing backhand down the line and does a little jump in the next point when Watson dumps a backhand into the net. Kerber breaks.

"That should help settle Heather down. Now she's got to figure out a way of serving effectively against the great return of Kerber."

  19. Watson breakspublished at 16:20 British Summer Time 26 June 2014

What a way to hit back, Watson attacking the Kerber serve and having plenty of success to rustle up three break points herself. Like in the last game, the first is saved but the ninth seed then throws in an ill-timed double fault to hand the break back.

"Heather is learning early just how tough it is to get a ball back against Kerber, who hits the ball very flat and very low. It is very tough to be aggressive against that kind of shot."
