Maria Sharapova and Sam Murray - if you're reading this, idly passing a few minutes before your own first-round contest on Court no.1, it may be wise to start gathering your racquets - Lorenzi broken again, this time to 15, and the first set is nearly done.

"Federer still moves with such grace, balance and speed. It is inevitable he may be a quarter of a step behind where he was, it all starts to add up. The problem is he is going to be compared with Murray, Nadal and Djokovic. Where he is blessed is his balance and his anticipation. He wants to be keeping the points relatively short, as he has done here. There is no let-up with him. He is so good in every aspect of his game."

Several Federer fans in full 'RF' red regalia, including one lady in a hat so large it appears she has fashioned it from a pub beer garden umbrella. Federer holds to love, dismissively battering away an overhead at the net as Lorenzi is left alone and miles from where he needs to be beyond the baseline.

Sabine Lisicki pockets the first set to the tune of 6-2 with 35 minutes on the clock against Julia Glushko.

"Federer is always such a pleasure to watch. There's so much diversity in his game. The first thing I noticed when he walked out on to the court today was that he looks stronger. He had a lot of lower back issues last year, but he looks so strong now.

"He is absolutely a contender to win Wimbledon this year. Anyone who has won here seven times is perfectly suited for grass court tennis, and he won at Halle last week, so he's got the matches under his belt. In addition, there are also questions over some of the other contender; Rafa Nadal, for instance, has only won a couple of matches here over the last few years."

Warm applause as thumping serving from Lorenzi wins him his first game of the contest. A somewhat melancholy air about the Italian, as if each of those 12 previous first-round defeats at Grand Slam events has taken another small nibble from his faith in the world.

Jerzy Janowicz looked like a man in a bit of bother a break down in the third after sharing the first two sets with Somdev Devvarman.

That bazooka serve is still not firing like it can, just six aces and a 53% strike rate, but its owner is now looking good at 4-6 6-3 6-3 2-1 up with a break in the fourth.

"I hope Federer's back holds up. Last year he didn't moan about it but it was a problem. He's got the heart of a fighter under that polished exterior. He'd like to win another Slam or two and prevent Rafa overtaking his record. He thinks of this as his tournament."

Sloppy brace of forehand errors from Federer to ship an unexpected break-back point. Sadly for fans of ageing Italian foot-soldiers. Lorenzi is unable to capitalise, pulling a backhand wide and left stranded by a raking forehand from his garlanded opponent,

Lleyton Hewitt blinks first in the tie-break shootout with Michal Przysieny, folding out 16-14. The Aussie has a break early in the third set to keep the Fanatics noisy. They don't need any encouragement.

    Their man leads 6-2 6-7 (14-16) 2-0.

Nathan Smith:, external It's gonna be a massive shame when Federer eventually retires... doesn't even look like he tries...

Shohidur Rahman:, external Federer serving and volleying a lot already. Very old school.

Niall Davey:, external Almost doesn't seem quite right seeing Federer start his campaign on Court One. Always so used to him playing on Centre.

Federer on BBC Two on his relationship with coach Stefan Edberg: "He and I are similar in some ways and different in others. I think I'm more outgoing. I like to have friends and family around me, he likes more downtime to focus. I only need a minute to switch (into tennis mode). It is very inspiring and motivating to have someone like him around me. I know how to hit a backhand or forehand, it's little things - when to hit what shot, that advice in the right moment to give me peace of mind or motivate me."

Lorenzi in backwards baseball cap, longish locks tumbling out the back and sides. Anyone know where you can buy those backwards caps? I've only ever seen the forward ones for sale. Stinking trouble at 0-40, only for a thrashing serve out wide, Fed net-cord and overcooked forehand to drag it back to deuce. Federer, ever so slightly riled, flays away a running forehand pass to nick the break. Ominous.

Roger Federer on BBC Two: "It is nice having achieved so much at Wimbledon. It was always my dream to play here, never mind winning here. I feel 24! I cannot believe I am 32. This career goes by in a flash, which means you are enjoying it. I don't know how long I will be around. I will push as far as I can and hope to be successful to the end. It's fun still playing, my goal 10 years ago was to look at longevity - to still be around at 32-24. I'm happy, my plan is working."

There is one stat that Paulo and Roger are exactly level on: years lived. Both men are 32. Straightforward hold for the great champion, although Lorenzi draws his first supportive murmur from the crowd by missing with a forehand cross-court. Small crumbs.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on BBC Two following his win over Jurgen Melzer: "It was important for me to be really focused as soon as I got on the court. It was tough yesterday. Today I just came for one game and I'm very happy to get through. Yesterday I played a good first set but then he played a lot better, he didn't give me time to play and it was not easy. I stayed aggressive and finally here I am (speaking as the winner)!"
