Grigor Dimitrov takes the second set to clamber back into the match on Court One.

Would it be cruel to say that Alexandr Dolgopolov looks like a man who would be better at tennis on the console rather than in reality?

2013 Wimbledon champion on 5 live

"Venus Williams used to hold the face of her racquet very open, which meant she lost a lot of control, which meant on average only 30% of her first serves went in during the French Open. Now she has closed it, she has more control. I think consequently she is a better server than Kvitova."

Petra Kvitova's ponytail seems to have it's own doubts over her top six inches - forming an appropriate question mark over the Czech as she prepares to serve to stay in the match for a second time.

  6. Latest scorepublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 27 June 2014

Petra Kvitova keeps all the wheels on the cart, holding serve to restore second-set parity. There is no margin for error for her now though..

Two-time Grand Slam champion on BBC TV

"Kvitova is just so unpredictable. She misses a forehand in the middle of the court and yet she can be on the full stretch and hit a winner."

  8. Latest scorepublished at 17:05 British Summer Time 27 June 2014

A bark of delight from Petra Kvitova as she bashes a double-handed backhand down the line to take the Venus Williams serve to deuce.

But the Czech is still struggling to punch holes as often as she needs to sink her opponent. Williams is rolling with blows and drawing the mistakes and is keeping up her side of the scoreboard.

And now Kvitova has to serve to stay in the match. And she doesn't relish such situations.

Lucie Safarova is into uncharted territory. The Czech 23rd seed makes the last 16 of Wimbledon for the first time at the age of 27. Seems like Cibulkova had a few problems picking up the ball...

  11. Latest scorepublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 27 June 2014

Grigor Dimitrov in trouble over on Court One. The Bulgarian folds out of the first-set tie-break.

Dolgopolov, ranked 19th in the world, had been struggling in the build-up to Wimbledon with a groin injury which forced his withdrawal from Eastbourne and was not expected to throw up many road-blocks.

He is looking fully fit now though, although Dimitrov has a break in the second.

  12. Postpublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 27 June 2014

Venus Williams has faced just one break point so far in the match. Her serve locked up like Fort Knox.

Kvitova's serve however can be an all you can eat buffet of free points. While the American is keeping her tee-off out of range she is probably the favourite to take this one.

He fought and he fought but eventually Lleyton Hewitt runs out of puff as he is defeated in five sets by Jerzy Janowicz, a Wimbledon semi-finalist last year. Hewitt, competing in his 16th consecutive Wimbledon, loses 7-5 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 4-6 6-3, converted just three of 10 break point opportunities.

Another contender for the greatest specs in sport?

There is a bit of a lull in the Centre Court stalls. The patrons are a little figety, recharging glasses, stretching legs.

The early stages of the second set between Petra Kvitova and Venus Williams are not holding their full attention. And a few minds are wandering to Andy Murray's match against Roberto Bautista Agut.

  16. Latest scorepublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 27 June 2014

Jerzy Janowicz is breaking some Australian dreams out on court two.

The Pole has his heel on Lleyton Hewitt's windpipe. In a tennising, fifth-set sense that is.

The greatest specs in sport? It's a thin field.

West Indian cricket captain Clive Lloyd, two-time Tour de France winner Laurent Fignon, LA Lakers' sky-hooker Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. And then I'm struggling...

But Venus Williams' mum Oracene, admittedly not an actual participant, has just become a new contender...

  18. Postpublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 27 June 2014

    Tracy Austin
Two-time Grand Slam champion on BBC TV

"Incredible variety from Venus, the onslaught of power and then some nice slices to change the pace. Her returns were extremely impressive and when you're pushing Kvitova back you know you're in a good position. Venus is striking the ball so cleanly and is able to eat up the power that is coming at her from Kvitova."

The closer you get to the business end of a set, the flakier Petra Kvitova gets. It's a direct correlation.

Venus Williams profits as the sixth seed offers up three break and set points and punts a backhand wide to concede the first.
