Despite the tumble and the shoulder strain, a pretty straightforward two hours and 12 minutes for Novak Djokovic and he dispatched Gilles Simon 6-4 6-2 6-4.

The Serb will look to improve his first serve, which only landed 59% of the time, but he created and converted the majority of break points in the contest and won a precise 100 points during the match. Nice and exact from the number one seed.

Twenty-third seed Lucie Safarova takes the first set in her court three meeting with 10th seed Dominka Cibulkova.

It is a big chance for the winner of that one to get further with either Victoria Azarenka's unseeded conqueror Bojana Jovanovski or Czech world 175 Tereza Smitkova to follow.

"'Come on!' screams Lleyton Hewitt after completing his comeback from 2-0 down to force a deciding set. The 2002 champion waves his arms at the crowd, but they need no encouragement to rise to their feet to acclaim the 33-year-old's efforts."

I have to say I'm enjoying this year's new tighter dress code. It could be a scene from the 1950s out on Centre Court with Petra Kvitova and Venus Williams in sparkling all-white and not a sponsor in obvious sight.

There is nothing old-school about the action though. An arcing Kvitova ace sweeps up a game, before Williams, a little less strength a few more street smarts, follows suit.

Kitty Godfree wouldn't stand a chance.

    Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!

Lleyton Hewitt, wind in his sails, power in his elbow, has taken last year's semi-finalist Jerzy Janowicz to a fifth and is the man with momentum.

"Venus bullies her opponents with depth and power from both wings and Kvitova, in the flick of an eye, can start spraying balls particularly on that forehand side."

Petra Kvitova is cranking that big Frankenstein southpaw forehand into life. One wrong-footing monster leaves Venus Williams pawing at the baseline disconsolately.

Venus is holding her own out there so far. Her touch is in with some delicate angles into the Czech forecourt asking questions of Kvotova's mobility.

"Lleyton Hewitt brings the Court Two crowd to its feet as he chases down a drop shot and forces an error from Jerzy Janowicz to break the big Pole's serve. The 2002 champion is still a delight to watch as he scampers after every ball as if his life depended on it. As the crowd chant "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie," we could be on course for a fifth set."

"There's a healthy throng at court 8 where the Bryan Brothers, the peerless kings of doubles are in action. The identical twins from the USA have 15 Grand Slam titles but have a fight on their hands after losing the first set to unseeded duo Matthew Ebden and Samuel Groth from Australia."

Grigor Dimitrov is kicking off his third round encounter with Alexandr Dolgopolov. The Bulgarian, a possible quarter-finalist for Andy Murray, won at Queen's in the build-up to Wimbledon.

Lleyton Hewitt is bubbling out on court two. An umpire's call comes late and his protestations are not so tardy. Rabbiting away with the Fanatics in the crowd urging him on, the 33-year-old gets his point across.

The Australian is two sets to one down, but has plenty of fire in his belly.

"Only 35 minutes ago we thought Djokovic might be out of the tournament. I am glad he is still in it even though he is in Murray's half, you don't want to see a player go out like that way. Tsonga will be his sternest test. He is going through the gears but I haven't seen a champion in the making, I just don't think Novak has looked A1 just yet."

So the tale of the tape...

Kvitova leads the head to head meetings by three to one, most recently winning in Doha earlier this year.

She is ranked sixth in the world, while Venus has slipped south to 31.

Venus may be a five-time champion but this is her first time in the third round since 2011.

"The biggest difference between Venus now and when she won is the velocity on her serve. She's lost something like 13-14mph on both the first and second serves. She's got to pick that up if she's to have any chance against Petra."

A Herculean shift from Lawrence, who has just taken a well-earned break from the keys. Mike Henson stepping in for the next little while and just as I take my seat so does Oracene Price.

Venus Williams' mum, hair of burnt orange clashing with a scarlet jacket, is on Centre Court to see her daughter take on Petra Kvitova.

The first clash of former champions at this year's championship. Venus with five Venus Rosewater Dish replicas on her mantelpiece, Kvitova with just the one - from back in 2011.

"Wimbledon starting a week later next year is great. Having the extra week off at the end of the French Open will be good. If you do well at the French, you need some time off to re-energise. For everyone else, you get a week longer to practice on grass which is useful. On a clay court you're sliding into shots and the ball bounces a lot higher so you're legs when you come onto grass are a bit sore."

Novak Djokovic on his injury scare during his win over Gilles Simon: "It was a sharp pain when I fell, an awkward fall. I was just hoping there is nothing going on with the joint, luckily there is no damage and I could play.

"The muscle was quite sore with the impact but I am just glad to get through. Now there are two days off and I am going to try and recover the next one is Tsonga and it's going to be a great match up for both of us.

"I played well though I dropped a couple of service games. It could have gone either way in the third but in the important moments I came up with the right selection of shots.

"It's obvious as the tournament progresses you are going to face some higher ranked players - like Tsonga - who has been a regular in the second week. He's a great grass court player, he loves the energy of the big stadium and it is going to be a big challenge for both of us."
