Angelique Kerber is into a quarter-final against Eugenie Bouchard.

That is set for tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it already.

That was a shock. Stephan Shemilt is here to take you through a match that would register on the Reichter scale if it goes Nick Kyrgios's way. Over to you Steph...

More from Angelique Kerber on reaching the quarter-finals: "Before the match I had it in my mind that in the last few slams I'd lost in the fourth round, so I was trying to play point by point. The atmosphere was amazing and I just enjoyed it."

Angelique Kerber speaking to BBC TV's Phil Jones after reaching the quarter-finals: "Its unbelievable, it was such a tough match, playing on a high level and it was so close. I'm so happy, she's a great player on grass, but I was just focusing on myself and I'm so happy to be in the quarters."

Match of the tournament so far? Certainly the most competitive one yet seen on Centre Court.

Proper eyeball glue. It demanded every drop of your attention.

Injured British number two on BBC Radio 5 live

"Such an impressive match from Angelique Kerber, I don't think we thought she would close it out, losing out on so many match points and you have to ask how she can recover for tomorrow's quarter-final."

    Lucky number seven.

A quite extraordinary point, full of scamper, lob and counter, ends with Sharapova netting.

A seventh match point and finally Kerber makes it stick. Sharapova punts long and Kerber folds into screams of delight.

Had she lost that game then the match might have gone with it for Kerber. Such a titanic psychological tussle.

  7. Sharapova saves six match pointspublished at 15:46 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Maria Sharapova's serve is suddenly beset with gremlins. She slides to 0-40 and three break points down.

Sharapova is not out of a match until she is in the taxi back to the hotel. She saves all three with steely percentage tennis and then redeems a fifth Kerber match point from deuce with a bolshy serve. A sixth match point is back in the bag as well as she digs a trench on the baseline and keeps blasting.

    On we go...

    Tracy Austin
Two-time Grand Slam champion on BBC TV

"That's halfway for Safarova but she must stay focused now. She has served very well and adjusted better to Makarova's game than Makarova has adjusted to hers."

  9. GAME AND FIRST SETpublished at 15:41 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Lucie Safarova has taken the first set against Russian Ekaterina Makarova in the first of the women's quarter-finals.

If the 23rd seed goes on to complete victory, we will be guaranteed a Czech player in the final as she will meet either Petra Kvitova or Barbara Zahlavova Strycova in the semis.

Angelique Kerber can't buy a serve. The German double-faults and then pattercakes her way to 15-40, Maria Sharapova walloping away a tame and timid second serve.

Kerber rediscovers some steel to save the first, but slips, scampers and then screws her forehand wide on the second.

Sharapova is back in the match. And quite possibly has shotgunned the front seat.

  11. GAME, SET AND MATCHpublished at 15:35 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Jamie Murray is out of the men' doubles, the brother of Andy beaten alongside Australian partner John Peers in five sets by second seeds Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares.

    That's a third-round exit - 6-3 6-7 (7-2) 7-6 (7-3) 3-6 6-3 - for Murray, who remains in the mixed doubles with another Australian, Casey Dellacqua.

Angelique Kerber's folks are off their seats as she brings up match point at 30-40. Their girl could do with adopting a similar pose.

She swats wide as she crouches low into one of those low baseline shots. She'll have to do it on her own serve. A thick net cord breaks Maria Sharapova's way to seal the game.

  13. Postpublished at 15:28 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Never mind the angles, feel the depth. Angelique Kerber lands a groundstroke right up on Maria Sharapova's toes on the baseline for 40-30.

Sharapova returns the favour with a perfectly measured forehand to move to deuce and then murders Kerber's serve in cold blood to set up break point.

That one is wasted. Sharapova cuffing wide. As is a second. Sharapova cranking up the power and stretching the gauze.

Sharapova stares at the floor, her internal monologue distinctly post-watershed. Her mood won't be improved as the stream of winners from Kerber's racquet stops buffering and jumps back into life.

Forehand onto the line is inch perfect and the ninth seed is a game away.

The first set of the Stan Wawrinka v Feliciano Lopez round of 16 match saw the 100th tie-break of the men's tournament at Wimbledon 2014. This is the first time in history that the number of tie-breaks at a Grand Slam has reached triple figures in either the men's or the women's event.

  15. Postpublished at 15:20 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Maria Sharapova holds to 15. A break there would surely have been curtains with Angelique Kerber still deep in a purple patch.

Two more holds from the German though and the fifth seed is toast regardless.

  16. Postpublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Maria Sharapova gets her talons into the Angelique Kerber serve, winning two superb points from 40-15 down as a clean winner and a stretching forehand volley buy her a pass to deuce.

Jujutsu though. That is what this is like. The art of "manipulating your opponent's force against themselves".

Kerber sees the step up in pace from Sharapova and uses it as the platform from which to hit her own winners, a final forehand down the line taking the game from deuce.

The German has been dead-eyed down that corridor today.

"Kerber is playing very, very well and although she is not a great server she is placing her serves really well today.

"Maria is getting very disappointed with the amount of unforced errors she is making, usually in tough situations like this is when she plays her best tennis."

  18. GAME AND SECOND SETpublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

    Milos RaonicImage source, AP

Milos Raonic is fighting back on court three against Kei Nishikori. The Japanese player took the first set but Raonic has roared back to level things up, taking the game to his opponent with some blistering serves and a total of 24 winners. Who's your money on? Four sets or five? Canada or Japan in the quarters?

  19. Postpublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

The Maria Sharapova grunt has moved up and past shout level to a half-bark half-snarl.

The Russian does just enough to scare off Angelique Kerber from 30-30, pumping a gutsy forehand winner before getting the luck on a tightrope-walking net cord.

  20. Wawrinka to face Federerpublished at 15:10 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

    Mark Woodforde
Former Grand Slam doubles champion on BBC Radio 5 live

"Stan Wawrinka is playing some great grass court tennis, and he is in with a great shout to beat the great grass-courter Roger Federer."
