    Laura Robson
Injured British number two on BBC Radio 5 live

    Angelique KerberImage source, Reuters

"I'd like to see Maria try something different if she can, because she is kind of playing right into Kerber's hands. She really enjoys playing against aggressive shot-makers like Maria, and it's currently not working out for her."

  2. Postpublished at 14:31 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Maria Sharapova challenges a call but Angelique Kerber's brutal return of serve is inch-perfect and after being 0-40 down the German gets back to deuce. Sharapova in trouble but an error from Kerber and then an ace means the Russian holds serve.

    Peter Fleming
Seven-time Grand Slam doubles champion on BBC TV

"Robredo is throwing caution to the wind a little more and he has changed his style of play as he needed to. The question remains whether he can maintain this level of play because it is a style he isn't used to. It is asking a lot for him to do it for the next three sets.

"The match at last year's US Open which Robredo won was the straw that broke the camel's back and it was the clue to Roger that he had to get healthy because he didn't want to go through that experience again."

  4. Sharapova v Kerberpublished at 14:27 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

    Marion Bartoli
2013 Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 live

"Maria is playing against an absolute wall at the moment, because Angelique is getting to every single ball and it's tough."

  5. Postpublished at 14:26 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Angelique Kerber shifts her weight through the ball perfectly, injecting pace into a winning forehand down the line for 30-30.

It is the shot that just keeps on giving. A low-swept version gives her game point from deuce. That one is seen off by Maria Sharapova, but the German is eventually off the line with a deft flicked winner.

This is a right old tussle, and Kerber looks eager for the scrap.

Jamie Murray and his partner John Peers are into a fourth set against Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares, the second seeds, in the men's doubles. Murray and Peers have just lost the third set in a tie-break.

What changes would you make to Wimbledon?

Will, Twickenham: "If not the middle Sunday, how about doing what the French do and start on the first Sunday. It might mean a younger audience, that presumably the LTA want to attract. No disrespect meant but most of the crowds don't look like the playing future."

  8. Kerber breakspublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Angelique Kerber slugs straight back with a break to love. This is tight as piano wire. As the tension increases so does Sharapova's will to win, but she is being matched so far.

  9. Sharapova breakspublished at 14:16 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Angelique Kerber's serve is still delivering lots of free points for the German. Kerber gets back to 30-30 from 0-30 down as Sharapova fends back a peppery one and she swats away a down-the-line winner.

Sharapova is dictating in the next rally though and threads away a winner for a break point. She keeps going for the lines on the next point, but with less success, as she spears the ball between the tramlines.

Kerber has her chances with a couple of game points from deuce, but Sharapova grabs her by the ankle and drags her back into the mire on each occasion.

There is no escape. A duffed forehand into the net gives away the game for Kerber. She gives her strings a boot in frustration.

Alize Cornet, who knocked out Serena Williams before exiting the singles yesterday, has bid a fond farewell to this year's tournament on Twitter:, external

"This Wimbledon 2014 is over for me in singles, but it will remain a wonderful tournament full of emotions! Thanks for supporting me! Doubles is still on, let's make the grass court season last a little more!"

  12. GAME AND SECOND SETpublished at 14:08 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

BBC Sport's Stephan Shemilt on Court One

"Roger Federer mainly imperious, Tommy Robredo occasionally inexplicable, the second set was at least more of a contest. Still, Federer is two up inside an hour and marching towards the last eight. Usually the biggest of favourites, he's had to put up with calls of support for Robredo. The spectators want a match, not a victory parade."

  13. Kerber wins first setpublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Maria Sharapova serving at 4-4. The Russian goes hunting the lines and is a whisker away, giving Kerber the mini-break. Massive chance to snatch it back. But Sharapova clumsily bops a backhand wide after running down a drop-shot. 6-4 and two set points for Kerber.

The Sharapova backhand has popped out for a bit, just when it is required. Its owner folds out of the set with another tame and stray shot off that wing.

  14. Warming uppublished at 14:05 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Milos Raonic, he of the boom-boom serve, is next on court three in an intriguing battle against Japan's Kei Nishikori. Raonic is looking to become just the third Canadian (the second was Eugenie Bouchard) in history to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

  15. Tie-break updatepublished at 14:03 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Maria Sharapova burgles the Angelique Kerber serve at the first attempt, making off with a mini-break. The Russian almost has another, but Hawk-Eye reprieves Kerber when she could have been 3-0 adrift. Instead it is 2-1 and Kerber takes the mini-break back as Sharapova plants a backhand into the net.

Plenty of scurry and hustle from Kerber in the final point before the changeover as she holds serve. Evens as it stands.

  16. Postpublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Angelique Kerber can only applaud as Maria Sharapova lunges wide to send a backhand return zinging through for a clean winner and 40-15. Is the world number five starting to get a read on the Kerber serve?

Certainly not that last one. Another out wide, this time to the forehand side, is out of reach. Tie-break time.

  17. Lisicki into quarter-finalspublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

    Mark Petchey
    BBC Sport commentator

    Sabine LisickiImage source, AFP

"I'm not sure how Lisicki managed to win but, like the German football team against Algeria yesterday where they said they survived and advanced, that is what she has done.

"But she will have to get the shoulder better if she is to be a threat to Halep and get through.

"Credit to Lisicki but Shvedova will be bitterly disappointed that the opportunity to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final has passed her by."

Kerry Leigh Moore:, external People always talking about Rafa taking his time but what about Maria? She's taking forever between points!

Pete Henshall:, external C‏lamp down on players time wasting, grunting & moaning about bad light. Spectators only to leave seats between sets.

  19. Postpublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

The mental and physical effort expended in securing that break catches up with Maria Sharapova a bit as she ships the first two points of the game.

The Russian is back to 30-30 and parity as Angelique Kerber swats into the net off a second serve.

Centre Court is beginning to echo like a school swimming gala as Sharapova cranks up the volume of her grunts. There is a final wails of delight to cap it all off as she makes good her escape.

  20. GAME AND FIRST SETpublished at 13:51 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Stan Wawrinka is seeking to make up for lost time and he's taken the first set out on Court Two in a tie-break against the mean, lean serving machine that is Feliciano Lopez. The Australian Open champion is looking to book his place in the last eight.
