Reflecting on her 6-2 6-2 defeat to Maria Sharapova, on Centre Court, Britain's Johanna Konta told BBC Radio 5 live: "I gave my best out there today, and it just wasn't good enough. You can't always play your best tennis, but in terms of the way I approached the match and embraced the occasion I was pretty pleased."

Stan Wawrinka unfurls that elegant killer of a backhand, cutting a lovely angled pass, but he has not been able to make significant inroads into the Joao Sousa serve so far in this second set. Still bobbing along on serve...

Liam Broady is on BBC One and still looks a little shell-shocked by all the attention in the wake of his win over Marinko Matosevic.

"Waking up this morning I didn't expect to win, I didn't expect to lose either, but it has not really sunk in yet," he said.

"I think by the time I get to bed this evening, I will look back and have a little chuckle to myself.

"Andy Murray has been invaluable with advice for players I have played against and just being able to learn from one of the best tennis players of our era. It is not just me either, it is the same with all the British players. And he doesn't have to do any of it, he does it because he wants to."

Is it just me or is cream on strawberries, well, just a little odd...

On a cherry bakewell, fine. Over Christmas pudding, if you want.

But fresh fruit? I'm not having it.

"The two great strengths of Lleyton's game were his body and his mind. His mind is still strong, but his body has started to let him down.

"He can still be involved in tennis when he retires at the start of next year, and now he can make his own schedule. I'm sure opportunities will come knocking and he's not someone we need to worry about too much because he will still be heavily involved in the game in the future, even when he's no longer playing."

"Sad scenes on court two, and not just because a thrilling encounter is finally over. Jarkko Nieminen and Lleyton Hewitt both saluted the crowd at the end of that four-hour five-set epic, which the Finn took 11-9 in the decider, but for the Australian it was also a wave goodbye to Wimbledon on his final appearance at the AELTC.

"The 34-year-old 2002 champion will not be back next year, but got a fitting farewell for his feats down the years, and also his efforts today."

"It hasn't been happening for Lleyton over the last two-and-a-half years, and his game hasn't been able to stand up to the challenge.

"He's 34 and has played in 17 Wimbledon tournaments, and I can remember him beating me as a 16-year-old, but it's a sad moment to watch him play in this manner as I've seen him play so strongly and with such heart, but over the last six months he's gone downhill and it's not nice to see champions playing at that level.

"At the end of this season he'll have a lot more time on his hands, and I'm sure he'll be heavily involved in Australian tennis in the future."

"It's a sad end for a player who has graced the game for 17 years, but a memorable moment for Nieminen to get a first victory against Hewitt. They both deserved the applause. They have kept us entertained for the brilliant and, occasionally for the curious. Hewitt has been a worthy competitor for so long and goes out with his pride maintained."
