"Goodness gracious," says Jo Konta, who goes on to thank the crowd for their support.

"I think it was mentally, emotionally, physically, I left it all out here on court. I ran after every single ball and fought for every single point.

"It's really about keeping on moving and keeping your mind as quiet as possible, the less thoughts the better."

"She was solid and aggressive. She wasn't overawed by the occasion or the opposition and to win in that manner in a 79-minute set is fantastic."

    Konta 4-6 6-4 8-6 Makarova

1984. The year Jo Durie reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. It was to be the last time a female British tennis player was to reach the last eight of a major until... until...

Three match points to Konta - and she needs just the one, Makarova returning into the net. Congratulations, Dame Konta.

Ok, maybe that's pushing it slightly...

"Konta is running everything down and playing really smart tennis. To get the break again showed great resilience. Now keep making Makarova work for everything"

    Konta 4-6 6-4 7-6 Makarova

Here we are, entering the fourth hour of this match. Sweat glistening on Konta's visage... Both players breathing heavier than they were. The British number one, the underdog, sneaks to 15-30 and the crowd's whistles indicates that the Brit has conjured up two break points!

The Briton's ploy of targeting Makarova's forehand paying dividends. Can she make history on the second bite of the apple?

  7. Murray 6-4 1-1 Tomic*published at 09:33

Tomic, as is his wont, is blowing hot and cold and you can't really afford to blow hot and cold against Murray, you need to be roaring like a furnace to have a chance. Tomic steers a backhand return down the line for 30-30 before Murray tugs a forehand long to hand the Aussie a break point. Oh dear, strange shot from Murray, a telegraphed drop-shot into the onion bag, Tomic breaks back.

  9. Konta 4-6 6-4 6-6 Makarovapublished at 09:31

Konta takes the first point, a nerve easer for the Briton. In the next point she attempts to end a baseline slug-fest with an audacious winner, but there was a touch too much adrenaline on that one. 15-15.

Makarova the next to suffer a rush of blood to the head, swinging loose when all she had to do was hit the target. But the Russian makes up for it with a fabulous winner, a stunning irretrievable backhand.

Konta unconcerned, coming to the tape, volleying to 40-30. Clumsy from the Russian - a forehand into the barrier. Konta level and breathing fire.

Murray all over a Tomic second serve, making it 15-30 with a forehand winner. Tomic then produces his second forehand error of the game to hand Murray two break points. Murray nets with an attempted pass but follows up with an acute backhand volley for the break.

"Konta has to keep hanging in there. She's not doing anything wrong but she probably wants to get a few more first serves in."

How will this story end? Will it end? I've been typing since 1834 and who knows whether the finishing line is in sight, everything is a haze of forehands and backhands. The first set played in a different age, a different time. Well, three hours ago.

Ah, yes, the score. It's 30-30. Konta goes long, presenting Makarova with an easy point. The Briton slaps a return into the tape and now we find out how the British number one handles pressure.

  13. Murray 6-4 Tomic*published at 09:23

Tomic has really upped his game here and he catches Murray out with a cute angled forehand for 15-15. Tomic nets with a tame backhand to hand Murray two set points before the Scot prevails after a slice-fest of titanic proportions for the set.

  14. Makarova breaks backpublished at 09:22 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2016

    Konta 4-6 6-4 5-5 Makarova*

So, here we are, the British number one, serving for the match to become the first British female to reach the last eight of a major since 1984. Elton John was married to a woman 31 years ago. A lot has changed in the last three decades.

Makarova won't go down without a fight, a crunching driving volley brings up two break points. A sumptuous shot.

Nervy stuff. Konta serves out wide, Konta with a timid volley which Makarova should have gobbled up but instead she swings wild and wide. One break point chalked off.

A Konta forehand sits up nicely for the Russian, who steps in and crunches a forehand beyond Konta.

  15. *Murray 5-4 Tomicpublished at 09:18

Tomic with an ace out wide, as blase as you like, and the Aussie is pulling out some sweet forehands now as he forces Murray to serve for the set.

  16. Konta breakspublished at 09:16

    *Konta 4-6 6-4 5-4 Makarova

Super passing shot from Konta down the line while on the run. Tennis at its best. There have only been a few truly memorably rallies and shots in this match, but that hasn't made it any less engrossing.

15-30 and Konta is on the attack... a beautiful backhand down the linehas her ahead. Makarova forced onto her heels, so punchy was Konta's return and the Russian balloons her reply long.

Two break points. Interesting. The Briton targets Makarova's forehand and  gets her reward - a break. Could there be a British female in the quarter-final of a major? Blimey.

  17. Tomic breakspublished at 09:16

    Murray 5-3 Tomic*

Tomic steers a backhand return down the line from a Murray second serve before Murray sends down his seventh ace of the set. Tomic swats away a smash for 30-30 before pulling out a huge forehand return for a break point. Murray saves with yet another ace before Tomic puts away a backhand winner down the line.

Murray serves and volleys for deuce, Tomic nets with a backhand and Murray finally has set point after 37 minutes... good return by Tomic has Murray scrambling and he can only find the net with a forehand. Murray nets with a forehand volley, it's break point number three...

Fine second serve from Murray followed by a heave-ho forehand helps save again. But Tomic carves out a fourth break point and this time he kicks the door open, the Aussie still alive in this first set.

  18. Konta 4-6 6-4 4-4 Makarova*published at 09:13 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2016

Konta refuses to wit when perhaps other underdogs might have. The Briton hitting aggressively from the back of the court, getting her rewards, cantering to 40-0. Makarova nicks one point back, but can do little to net a return which allows Konta to level the scores.

  19. * Konta 4-6 6-4 3-4 Makarovapublished at 09:09 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2016

Makarova the more experienced of these two players, and the higher ranked. Konta is a woman, though, who eats top seeds for breakfast, dinner and lunch. The British number one lets a break point slip.

Canny from Konta. A backhand winner down the line has the crowd purring. Second break point Konta. Second break point whistles in the wind.

Makarova ahead once more, a cheeky lob forcing Konta to sheepishly return to her chaiir.

Remarkably, Murray has never lost a Tour match against an Australian, winning all 16 of his previous meetings. He did lose to Nick Kyrgios at the 2016 Hopman Cup. Murray is also 13-1 against players at their home Grand Slam. His only loss to a player at their home major came against Gael Monfils at the French Open in 2006.
