  2. Murray 4-2 Tomic*published at 09:05

Murray hitting his spots again, making it 15-0 with a wrong-footing backhand winner. Another ace down the middle, and another, before Tomic finds a return for 40-15. But a third ace seals the deal, the Murray serve looking lethal.

"Konta is really vocal now, she really wants this. She just has to keep her emotions in control. She has really lifted her serve."

  4. Konta 4-6 6-4 3-3 Makarova*published at 09:02

At 30-30 the game is evenly poised. Konta showing plenty of guts as she battles back from 15-30 to eventually take the game. Who knows how this is going to end.

The crowd into this match a bit more now that the local lad has won a couple of games but you don't really get the feeling Tomic has melted many Aussie hearts. That's outrageous from Murray - another monster exchange and the Scot finishes it off with an angled backhand winner that was so acute it almost didn't exist. Two break points and Tomic saves the first - but he can't save the second, Murray has broken again...

There hasn't been an easy hold of serve in this match, which explains why we're into a third hour. Makarova clearly frustrated, ranting in her native tongue,  as her unforced errors allow Konta to halt her march for 40-30. But hold the Russian eventually does. Tense stuff.

  7. Murray 2-2 Tomic*published at 08:57

Murray blows a forehand long before spraying a forehand wide for 0-30. Murray settles with his second ace before muffing a drop-shot to hand Tomic two break points. Murray finds a deep first serve to save one but he can't save the second, Tomic is back on level terms after winning another long exchange. Interesting.

Konta is certainly at home at this level. Whatever the outcome, she's proved she belongs on such a stage. Worrying signs as the British number one slips 0-30 behind, but her serve then gets her out of trouble.

But Makarova picks up a break point, though she fails to take her chance as she's flung around the court before she's no option but to eventually net.

To deuce? Why not. Konta adds more air and less pace to her forehand and that catches Makarova a little off guard. Break point saved and the Briton is a tough cookie.

  9. *Murray 2-1 Tomicpublished at 08:51

Tomic with his first ace before Murray finds the baseline with a dipping forehand winner. Tomic nets with a forehand but it's 30-30 as Murray steers a backhand long. Murray takes it a deuce after the first marathon rally of the match and the sense is that the longer a rally goes, the less likely Tomic is to win it. But Tomic wins that rally to hold, sending Murray scurrying hither and tither before killing the point off with a naughty stop-volley.

Konta's backhand is the weapon which is causing Makarova the most problems. At 30-30, Konta's eyes widen, she senses she might have an opportunity, but she slaps a forehand into the net and that's as close as she gets. Makarova home and hosed thanks to masterful volleying.

  11. Murray 2-0 Tomic*published at 08:45

Double-fault from Murray for 15-15 before the Scot shovels a forehand long. Tomic finds the net with a tame backhand before pushing a forehand long, only for Murray to net with a backhand after the first substantial rally of the match. Bit of a moan from Murray about the big screen - must be flickering in the corner of his eye while he's serving - before Tomic plays another ropey old backhand into the net.

Tomic finds a bulky return to force a deuce but that's cute as a button from Murray, a sliced backhand drop-shot that Tomic can only bunt into the tramlines. Murray's first ace of the match seals the deal...

  12. Konta 4-6 6-4 1-1 Makarova*published at 08:42

After nearly eight minutes, we resume the third set. Has Konta lost her rhythm? She  loses the opening two points, but levels to 30-30.

Makarova's forehand drops onto the paint - break point - but the Briton's serve digs her out of trouble and she levels from deuce.

  13. *Murray breaks Tomicpublished at 08:37

*Murray 1-0 Tomic (* denotes next to serve)

Tomic loses the first point of the match, plonking a limp forehand volley into the net. Murray does much the same for 15-15 before the Scot leaves Tomic marooned with a wicked sliced drop-shot. Well-worked point by Murray creates two break points and he only needs one, piling into a second serve with a savage forehand winner.

"It is annoying but Konta shouldn't be getting worried about what's happening to her opponent. Her conversation was very polite though."

Makarova receives treatment on what looks like a blister on her right foot. Konta has a word with the umpire, pointing out that this is not a new injury for the Russian.

Ladies, ladies, ladies, we need this match to end, we're getting cross-eyed watching two matches at once.

While Makarova receives a medical time out (which means an additional three minutes of treatment) Konta is up on the baseline.

A slight delay to the start of this third set as the players change their kit, or something like that. Whatever they're doing, it's a chance for the spectators to stand up and stretch their limbs.

A double fault from Makarova to start this third set. Will the ship sink fast and sink early? Two dreamy winners from Konta levels  the game at 40-40 -  exquisite shot-making from the British number one.

Advantage. Deuce. Advantage. Deuce. Konta going toe-to-toe...but the Russian holds firm in adversity.

  20. Murray's streakpublished at 08:31

Should Murray beat Tomic, it will be his seventh straight quarter-final appearance in Melbourne. That would move him into joint-fifth place on the list for most consecutive appearances in the last eight, behind Roger Federer (11), Stefan Edberg (10), Novak Djokovic (9), Rafael Nadal (8) and level with Ivan Lendl.
