Andrew Ewart: Watching Murray vs a player he should beat is like air travel: Vague sense of doom despite logic saying it'll be OK.

Natasha Moore: Watching Andy Murray at French Open is like watching Man Utd this season - highs and lows. Hope he finishes on a high like Utd did.

He has got rid of his coach in recent weeks as well Natasha.

    Wowers.

Andy Murray and Richard Gasquet are involved in a devilish bit of duck and dive at the net, exchanging delicate droppers at lightning speed all within six feet of each other.

Some of the crowd are on their feet as Murray finally pulls Gasquet out of shape. Well deserved.

Murray strings together some more mundane points to back up his break with a hold. He has now won 11 of the last 15 points.

"And as it goes on, it becomes mental."

    Murray 5-7 4-2 *Gasquet

Andy Murray hits a wobbler of a smash off the frame and in on the game's first point.

That was an eyesore of a shot, but it counts the same as whatever winner you choose.

A Gasquet error followed by a double fault and Murray has 15-40 and two break points that he never had to work for.

But he has the skill to turn good fortune into second-set supremacy, tickling cross-court to convert the first of those break points.

Both second seed Agnieszka Radwanska and sixth seed Simona Halep went out yesterday, and they were very unhappy about playing in the wet conditions.

Here's what former winner Mary Pierce thinks about the situation.

    "They're really strong comments.

"I've played many matches in the rain when it's not been dangerous. At any point in the game a player can shout up to the umpire or the referee. When you take into consideration how much rain we've had, it's important to just play when we can."

That drop-shot from Andy Murray is a keeper, stunned perfectly with back-spin to stay out of reach of a lunging Richard Gasquet.

It really is a lucky dip every time he has a rummage in his locker and decides to play that shot.

A more comfortable service hold and Murray will take that as he tries to get back on an even keel.

"These are the moments you live for. It almost doesn't get much better than this."

    *Murray 5-7 2-2 Gasquet

Richard Gasquet could open a fortune-telling tent if this tennis lark doesn't work out.

Some sort of extra sensory perception is the only explanation for his ability to know that Andy Murray was hitting a cross-court before the ball had even sniffed string.

That is 30-15. Murray pats away a winning volley for 30-all but that is as much of a dent as he can make.

Gasquet disdainfully thumps away a smash to seal again as Murray again dollies an attempted lob straight into his striking zone.

  12. Murray saves two break poinspublished at 14:42 British Summer Time 1 June 2016

    Murray 5-7 2-1 *Gasquet

Andy Murray is in an extended monologue with himself.

Richard Gasquet is posing all the questions with his tennis, clipping away a cute reply to a drop shot and then hitting through Murray off his backhand to move 15-40 and two break points up.

Murray breaks off his conversation with himself to see those off.

A drop-shot/lob combo works a treat, the winner cascading over a helpless Gasquet's head for advantage before he seals the game.

There is still plenty of trouble under the bonnet for Murray though. His game is spluttering and his concentration is wavering.

"What has been working for Richard is his backhand. He's been coming to the net and been aggressive as well.

"Andy seems frustrated, and you could see it at the end of the first set when he was missing drop shots. He's number two in the world for a reason, so I'm sure he'll figure out what he needs to do."

    Murray 5-7 1-1 Gasquet*

    Richard Gasquet's brow furrows.

A dribbler of a drop-shot and a snick off the net cord leave him 15-40 down and at the mercy of Murray.

Gasquet claws those two break points though to get to the halfway house of deuce.

Murray spanks a backhand return winner at one point, but is generally struggling to get a read on the Gasquet tee-off.

    Fresh set? Fresh start?

Well, Andy Murray gets over the line in the opening game of the second set, but is still short of firing on all engines.

He scoops a stretching forehand long and has little room for error at 30-30 before being let off the hook by two over-done groundstrokes from Gasquet.

"Incredible. I'm quite surprised after the beginning of that set.

"Everything was going so perfectly for Andy. But then the drop-shots started to go wrong and mistakes crept in. He seemed to get frustrated and changed his game.

"But Richard never gave up and played aggressively for every point. Good job."

  20. Game and first set Gasquetpublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 1 June 2016

    *Murray 5-7 Gasquet

Ebb and flow, to and fro, ying and yang,

Andy Murray lorded it over the first three games, but he ends up on the losing end of the first set.

With a boisterous home crowd at his back, Richard Gasquet has the ability to make this very ugly indeed.
