I often call Serena's serve the most powerful weapon in sport. It's closely followed by her will - her opponents can sense that when the going gets tough. When others get uptight, she becomes more relaxed.

    *S Williams 6-4 0-1 Pavlyuchenkova

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova clings onto her serve by her fingernails in the opening game of the second set.

She is feeling the full force of Serena's game now though, living point to point like a shipwreck survivior grabbing desperately to pieces of driftwood.

Cibulkova brings so much personality on to the court. Even when things aren't going well you know she will fight to the bitter end.

Dominika Cibulkova can't get a sniff here.

Elena Vesnina holds to love and then earns three break points.

She loses two of them, but then Cibulkova smashes into the net. A hefty lead for the Russian now.

    S Williams 6-4 Pavlyuchenkova

This is the shock-and-awe tennis that no other woman in the world can deal with.

Crunching power off that jackhammer serve and bruising groundstrokes hammer a hole in Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova's defences and whisk the first set off its feet.

  6. Serena breakspublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 5 July 2016

    *S Williams 5-4 Pavlyuchenkova

Not a single break point in the first eight games.

But suddenly - via a commanding whip across court from Serena and a netted Pavlyuchenkova forehand - there are three.

Love-40 and Pavlyuchenkova misses with her first serve.

You know what comes next. A dolly second serve, a pulverised backhand return and a despairing look from the Russian as the ball speeds away for a winner.

That serve is the greatest weapon in tennis history in the women's side. An unbelievable weapon for her. Look at what she's done from 0-30. I've never seen a player come back from the brink of defeat as much as Serena Williams.

Fitness has been something that's been an issue with Pavlyuchenkova throughout her career. With as much talent as she had coming out of the juniors, the expectations, the pressure, too much... it's hard not to feel stress when you're out there.

I wasn't particularly good at dealing with stress often enough. it's taken her a while, 25. This could be a big turning point in her career. Williams is playing tight right now.

That's more like it from the world number one.

Serena Williams holds to love with a beautiful forehand into the corner.

And now she's taken the next game to deuce on Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova's serve.

But the Russian serves a 108mph ace to take the advantage and Williams backhands into the net. We're back level.

Serena Williams pushes Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova hard on her service game, but mistakes from the American means the Russian holds for a second time.

Williams is looking a little stressed already, truth be told.

Venus Williams speaking to BBC Sport's Rishi Persad after her quarter-final win over Yaroslava Shvedova:

"What a tough day on the court. The tie breaker felt like she would win. I felt like my opponent was on fire.

"I felt like the crowd enjoyed all the great points. She got them involved in the last game. We gave them good tennis today.

"I love playing the game. When you're winning matches it makes it that much sweeter.

On playing Angelique Kerber in the semis:

"It doesn't matter who your opponent is."

I am pulling for Serena. I think the stress that she handled last year was tough, during the US Open there was always talk about the Grand Slam and she deserves to make this happen.

It is going to be great for tennis if she ties Steffi Graf's record.
