    Wawrinka 4-6 7-5 6-4 Nishikori

    Set point saved.

    We're at deuce.

Oh no not now Kei. An awful mis-hit and the ball skies long.

    Set point again.

Wawrinka has got it this time. Nishikori comes to the net again but can't return a Wawrinka forehand.

The Swiss player screams in delight again. I think they heard that one in Manhattan.

    Pressure on Nishikori now.

He looked like he'd be 5-2 down, then had a point to lead 5-4 but now needs to hold serve to stay in the set.

At 30-15 Nishikori decides to charge to the net, Wawrinka isn't having any of it and thrashes a forehand winner.

Stan's turn to come in. Too much pressure for Nishikori to handle. 30-40 set point Wawrinka.

    Huge moments here.

Nishikori guesses right to return a smash from Wawrinka who then puts a volley wide, 30-30.

Wawrinka didn't look like missing a backhand all night ten minutes ago but he does now to hand his opponent break point.

He saves it though. Brilliant defence. Wawrinka wouldn't have expected this but he's in a real battle just to stay even in this set now.

A 128mph serve is too much for Nishikori. Followed by a 130mph ace. A huge cry from emotion from Wawrinka, that was a massive hold.

  4. Play back under way and Nishikori holdspublished at 01:51 British Summer Time 10 September 2016

    *Wawrinka 4-6 7-5 4-4 Nishikori

The US Open beat Wimbledon in the roof closing stakes - the players are back under way already.

Nishikori is just as quick in winning the service game and we're back level at four games all.

That is a score that really did not look likely ten minutes ago.

Remember that rain I mentioned earlier?

    Well it has arrived.

Fear not though as the Arthur Ashe stadium has a roof this year, remember, but we're going to have a short delay while the roof closes.

I'm not sure who this favours? Nishikori looks like he could benefit from the break but he's just broken serve and has wrestled back some momentum.

Who is still with us? Let us know who you are backing to win from here.

    Wawrinka 4-6 7-5 4-3 Nishikori*

Well I didn't see this coming.

Wawrinka can't find a first serve in the game and Nishikori has break point.

The crowd roar in encouragement and the Japanese world number seven delivers.

This set looked all over moments ago but we're right back on serve.

This is looking really tough for the man from Japan now.

Two double faults in the game and he's down 15-40.

A Nishikori smash on the next point knocks the Wawrinka's racquet from his hand before we're back at deuce.

Nishikori manages to hold serve and just about stay alive in this third set but he's looking by far the tireder man.

Wawrinka has really stepped up his level and is getting good depth in his ground strokes. He is moving Nishikori around the court with his shot accuracy. Wawrinka is showing more positive energy.

Wawrinka holds and strides to his chair.

He must be pleased at the moment. He weathered the Nishikori storm early on and now is right in charge of this match.

Another backhand flies past Nishikori, Wawrinka's 27th winner of the match.

I don't think there is a better backhand in the sport but I'm open to suggestions...

That feels like a big moment.

Those bright yellow shoes of Nishikori aren't moving as quick as earlier on in the match.

He saves one break point with his fourth ace of the match but can't repeat the trick.

It is Wawrinka who strikes first in this third set.

The third game of this set meanders along and then suddenly gets interesting.

Nishikori hits a return onto the baseline to give himself break point.

He nets with a backhand a point later though and Stan shouts encouragement to himself again.

Nishikori sends a cross court backhand wide and Wawrinka holds.

Ten break points Nishikori has had in this match now, he's only taken two of them. Will that cost him?

Nishikori is still thinking about that second set.

30-30 and he comes into the net, Wawrinka has a chance for another backhand winner but he misses. I fancied him there, I must admit.

Nishikori scrapes through the game as his opponent hits a lob long. He beat Wawrinka in five sets on the way to the 2014 final, don't forget.

    Nishikori looks tired now.

He's been on court just over 13 hours so far in the tournament but three hours 57 minutes of those were against Andy Murray two days ago.

Wawrinka wins the opening game of this set and the Japanese wanders slowly to his chair, staring at the floor all of the way.

A great job there from Stan Wawrinka. Nishikori is visibly frustrated, banging his racquet on the ground but I don't know why he is so upset, he is playing great tennis.

Unfortunately for him he didn't get enough first serves in and Wawrinka really stepped up to take that set.

  16. Game and second set Wawrinkapublished at 01:04 British Summer Time 10 September 2016

    Wawrinka 4-6 7-5 Nishikori

One hour 23 minutes in and both players are going right at each other now.

This set is crucial. Both have had tough journeys to the last four and won't fancy a five-setter.

A tired looking second serve from Nishikori is swatted away by Wawrinka and it is set point again for the Swiss.

Long goes a Nishikori forehand. Wawrinka points to his temple, waves to the crowd. He's taken the second set.

One-all. Game on ladies and gents.

Good from Wawrinka, he's put the pressure straight back on his opponent with a quick service hold.

Nishikori has hit 18 unforced errors in this match, 15 of those have come in this set.

Rod Laver is watching on in the crowd. He looks impressed, as am I.

What a shot from Stan Wawrinka. The rest of us can only dream of a backhand like his as he hits another winner down the line.

30-30, big puff of the cheeks from Nishikori but it doesn't help as he hits a tame drop shot into the net and Wawrinka has set point.

A big intake of breath as a Wawrinka backhand clips the net but falls back on his side. Set point opportunity missed.

A spinning serve and a backhand error from Wawrinka gives Nishikori the game. He's the one to escape now.

    On we go.
