Well, Naomi Broady's disappointment aside, it's been a cracking day for the Brits.

Johanna Konta, Kyle Edmund and Heather Watson all secured victories to make it five Britons in the second round.

That hasn't been done at the Australian Open since 1987 - but it is the second time in five months at a Grand Slam, after last year's US Open.

    Read more on that here.

Elsewhere, Serena Williams coasted through against Belinda Bencic.

And there were victories for defending champion Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, as well as an epic 44-game final set between Croatia's Ivo Karlovic and Argentine Horacio Zeballos, which you can read about here.

  5. 'I used to be a trouble maker'published at 12:43 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2017

Australian Daria Gavrilova, , speaks on the Margaret Court Arena.

"Thanks so much everyone. I'm really glad I ended up winning. It was a really tough match. We're really good friends. I knew we would have a big battle an that's what happened.

"I told myself if she hits an ace it's too good and it's her strength.

"I like spending time on the court here - I can't win in under two hours. It's great to be playing in front of my friends and family and being at home.

"Last year I said everything is up to me because I was a trouble maker and wouldn't listen to my coaches and would whinge sometimes. I said it was up to me if i wanted to help myself."

    Gavrilova 3-6 6-4 7-5 Broady

It took Gavrilova a shade under two hours to secure her place in the second round. Broady ends the game with a grand total of 19 aces. Cliche klaxons at the ready, but neither player went down without a fight.

Broady should be proud of herself. She dealt with the pressure well in so many instances. There were a lot of small victories within that match for her.

You have to say well done to Gavrilova for soaking up the pressure of 19 aces. You feel sorry for Broady. She looked like a player who should be on this sort of stage. My goodness she put up a good fight.

    Gavrilova 3-6 6-4 7-5 Broady

That was a superb effort from both players, full of aggression and there was plenty of powerful shots in there. Naomi Broady looks dejected as she leaves the court to a huge round of applause from the crowd. She's played exceptionally well today. Her service game, in particular, was excellent.

What a game. And it's Daria Gavrilova who has come out on top. She raises her fist in celebration before racing over to give a gutted-looking Naomi Broady a hug.

    Gavrilova 3-6 6-4 6-5 Broady

Wonderful from Broady, another stonking serve ending up out of Gavrilova's reach. And then Broady misses! A lovely rally ends with Broady up at the net but she can't tip the backhand over the line.

Deuce quickly turns into advantage Gavrilova.

Ooft. A lovely return from Gavrilova, plenty of power behind it, to Broady's first two serves has the Brit on the back foot.

Broady uses that serve to drag it back to 15-30, before Gavrilova over hits, trying to force Broady on the back foot. 30-30.

    Gavrilova 3-6 6-4 6-5 Broady*

Magnificent from Gavrilova! She wins a rally up at the net with a lovely forehand, before Broady slices a return to her serve.

Gavrilova takes her time with her serve, going wide before hammering the return well out of Broady's reach. There's a raise of the hand as she holds her serve.

A sterling serve first up from Broady, before Gavrilova sends a backhand into the net.

Her 16th ace goes down a storm, as does her 17th. Game, Broady.

Right then. Broady to serve. Those firey aces got her out of trouble on her last serve. A slurp of water, a wipe on the towel, and she's ready.

Even the most delicate shots have plenty of aggression behind them now. Gavrilova raises a hand to her mouth as Broady comes out on top of a long rally, but the Australian muscles her way through the rest of the set.

Last year's semi-finallist and third seed Agnieszka Radwanska made a positive start in her first-round match against Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova, taking the first set 6-1.

But the Pole has surrendered the second set 6-4.

    *Gavrilova 3-6 6-4 4-4 Broady

A smash forehand means Broady does the first damage in the game, but she loses her line twice, overhitting a forehand.

The Brit takes a deep breath as she's on the losing side of a fine rally, before she lets out a yell as she takes it to deuce.

Back to back aces and she's out of trouble. Lovely stuff from these two.
