    Dimitrov 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 6-3 O'Connell*

Game, set and match for Grigor Dimitrov.

The world number 15 - whose favourite film, incidentally, is The Notebook - has completed a three-set victory over Christopher O'Connell of Australia.

Just the 15 aces in that game as he secured his place in the second round. Up next on court is Britain's Naomi Broady.

Oh Fernando! At 15-15 he's moving Djokovic all around the court like a Serbian yo-yo. Just when he needs to strike the killer blow he miscues it horribly.

A bang of the racket on a hoarding as he slips to 15-30 and Novak closes out the game.

Verdasco's wizardry has only been whispered today, but it needed to be loud and proud against the second best player in the world.

He's battling away at 30-30 on his serve but shrieks some Spanish as he puts one into the net.

A rare error from Novak takes us to deuce and Verdasco goes onto hold for the first time in the set.

    Here's one for you.

Ivo Karlovic and Horacio Zeballos are in the fifth set - where it is 13-13 on games. That's a whopper.

Nope. He can't take it. Djokovic takes it to deuce, and then advantage.

A Djokovic backhand is called out down the line - he challenges and gets it! It's in. Game to Djokovic.

    Verdasco looks devastated.

    *Djokovic 6-1 7-6 2-0 Verdasco

What fight there was in Verdasco seems to be evaporating away into the Melbourne night sky.

Rather than getting angry, he looks more resigned after losing points.

You can tell it's not working for him as his body shape looks ideal on a forehand but it flies into the net for 30-30.

Oh but a slobberknocker of a down-the-line forehand from the world number 40. Break point...

    *Djokovic 6-1 7-6 2-0 Verdasco

Djokovic goes to 15-0 but his nine-point winning run ends as Verdasco hits a top-notch winner.

The Spaniard has the bug and tries another big winner which goes awry and at 30-30 he puts into the net before taking it to deuce.

Verdasco has found some joy with the kick serve on his second service but Djokovic has this one well scouted for advantage and then a double fault secures the break.

    Djokovic 6-1 7-6 1-0 Verdasco*

Every so often there's some loud bangs somewhere near the arena. Possibly fireworks.

But the latest clatter puts Djokovic off as he goes to serve - no bother though as he rattled through the game 40-0 as quickly as the spin of a Catherine wheel.

Some hardy soul has brought their baby into the Rod Laver Arena.

He looks pretty content, for now. It will never last.

He also seems to have a Nick Kyrgios-style hair do. Trendy.

Ever wondered where Novak learned to swing his equipment so well?

It swung in roundabouts. There was no rhyme or reason in any of the play...no obvious patterns to comment on. Djokovic is in the driving seat, somehow.

  12. Djokovic wins second setpublished at 09:59 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2017

    Djokovic 6-1 7-6 (7-4) Verdasco

Yup. That's the second set for Novak.

Djokovic rifles in a serve that Verdasco gets a racquet to, but nothing meaningful as it drills into the net.

Regardless, that was much better from the Spaniard.

  14. Tie-breakpublished at 09:58 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2017

    *Djokovic 6-1 6-6 (5-4) Verdasco

Is Djokovic tiring? He's slow on to the ball as he pops into the net for another break from Verdasco.

The Serb responds on Verdasco's serve by taking control at the net and applying the pressure.

And Verdasco crumbles after a long rally and puts a backhand into the net. 5-4 to Novak.

  15. Tie-breakpublished at 09:55 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2017

    *Djokovic 6-1 6-6 (3-3) Verdasco

Djokovic had his hands on his knees after that one and Verdasco has him running again - the Serb hits into the net for a mini break back.

And we have a change of ends.

  16. Tie-breakpublished at 09:54 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2017

    *Djokovic 6-1 6-6 (3-2) Verdasco

Verdasco comes in this time to score at the net after a brave Djokovic return.

And he sticks away a volley - game on.

  18. Dimitrov takes second setpublished at 09:52 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2017

    Dimitrov 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 O'Connell

Grigor Dimitrov has his eye firmly set on a place in the second round. He's just taken the second set against Christopher O'Connell.

Dimitrov won his first trophy in two years at the start of the month when he claimed victory in the Brisbane International. He's made it past the second round three times in six appearances in Melbourne.

Nothing to see here - aside from a lovely forehand down the line from Djokovic.

An easy hold for the defending champ.

    We go to tie-break.

Away from the Rod Laver arena. Nick Kyrgios is kind of a big deal in Australia...
