Trying to prevent Dan Evans from turning the remarkable into the bloomin' unbelievable is Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

The world number 12 has credentials - bags of credentials - but then again, so did Marin Cilic and Bernard Tomic.

A beaten finallist here to Novak Djokovic in 2008 and a two-time Wimbledon and French Open semi-finallist.

Also, the second-best hair on tour after Dustin Brown.

Can the 31-year-old finally fulfil his potential?

One minute of the warm-up remains.

    Murray 5-7 6-5 Zverev*

A Murray backhand bounces in by a whisker, before a forehand winner takes him to a 30-0 lead.

Zverev gets too much on his forehand and he can't return Murray's final big serve. Game to Murray - and a shake of a head towards his box. He's not best pleased.

  4. 'I love Dan Evans!'published at 05:46 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2017

Mats Wilander, former world number one and seven-time Grand Slam champion, is the newest fan of Solihull’s finest…

“I love Dan Evans! I think he is such a breath of fresh air. Where has he been? Suddenly he comes out and it’s like, this guy can play! And he’s got a really good attitude, he’s engaged, enthusiastic and the crowd loves him. He makes you care, wears his emotions on his sleeve, and he seems to be a nice guy. But not overly nice, he’s a competitor. Attitude! Really good!”

    *Murray 5-7 5-5 Zverev

Murray returns from low off the line to get the advantage but a few seconds later he's yelling in frustration as his return goes high and wide.

The forehand from Murray clatters into the net before Zverev's own backhand drifts wide. His first serve bails him out again, Murray sprawling but unable to get to it, and an ace tidies the game up. Four set points come and go for the world number one.

    *Murray 5-7 5-4 Zverev

A sterling return from the baseline from Murray as he whizzes to a 0-30 lead. Zverev is up to the net constantly but it's Murray who has the better of it now.

A backhand goes whirling past him for set point but a lovely volley from the German and then a backhand lob bounces wide.

And Murray misses another! That's three set points that have gone begging. Deuce.

No kit? No Grand Slam experience past the third round? No photo with Kevin Pietersen?

    No problem.

Dan Evans' life has been flipped, turned upside down in the past six days, but it seems to be water off a duck's back for the fresh prince of Melbourne.

Facundo Bagnis, Marin Cilic and Bernard Tomic all lay in his wake.

Twelfth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is up next, with a quarter-final place at stake.

    Murray 5-7 5-4 Zverev*

Gorgeous from Murray. He's so quick to get to a down the line swat from Zverev, the backhand poised nicely and Zverev can't get to it.

Ooh that's lucky! Murray dives, gets enough on the ball to see it bobble off the top of the net and beat Zverev. A love service hold for Murray, but he was pushed all the way.

    *Murray 5-7 4-4 Zverev

Zverev lures Murray in, forcing him to come forward, and Murray parries into the net instead. He picks his next shot well though, a two-handed thump dropping short and beating the German.

Murray keeps his nerve, forcing Zverev to backhand into the net at close range, and then Zverev does the exact same thing!

A proper tussle, and Murray backhands into the net again as Zverev holds.

  11. 'Murray needs to slow down'published at 05:30 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2017

John-Laffnie de Jager, Heather Watson’s coach, on 5 live sports extra: “For me it’s the way Murray’s losing the points. That missed forehand was a normal ball with no pressure, and he hit it two yards beyond the baseline. Murray needs to slow down when he’s serving and think about it. The intensity drops when he serves.”

    Murray 5-7 4-3 Zverev*

Zverev, forever handy at the net, dabs a backhand at a Murray pass attempt and then benefits from the Briton's wonky footwork for 15-30.

A 202km/h serve out wide from Murray puts the shutters down, followed up by another double fault from Murray. That's deuce, and Murray lets his anger be known with a few choice words.

Up to the net comes Zverev, and there's the advantage with an overhead swat. and an overhit from Murray gives it to him! Murray lost his patience in the end.

  13. Murray breaks backpublished at 05:22 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2017

    *Murray 5-7 4-2 Zverev

A touch of nerves creeping in here for Zverev? Those drop shot tonks that have worked so well twice hand Murray the points.

That's clever though, forcing Murray to come forward and then sending the ball straight. A cracking return from Murray again sees Zverev at the net, and again it hits! A Murray error takes it to deuce.

Overhead from Murray to get the break point and a hammer back gets it. He breaks back.

    Murray 5-7 3-2 Zverev*

A helicopter whizzes over the Rod Laver Arena, just as Murray's return to Zverev's snappy forehand goes wonky.

Murray's fuming as his response to a lob at the net goes wrong, and he hits the net again with a wafty forehand. That's three break points for Zverev.

Off comes the pace and Zverev's return twice goes out of bounds. But that's a miss from Murray, and that's game Zverev!

  15. Postpublished at 05:13 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2017

    *Murray 5-7 3-1 Zverev

An excellent backhand volley from Zverev beats Murray, who has a long wipe of his face with a towel, before another volley goes the German's way.

Bang! There's the ace. And that dinky little backhand at the net gets him the game. He's on the board in this set.

    Murray 5-7 3-0 Zverev*

A double fault from Murray hands Zverev two break points on a plate. A fiery serve saves one, and a poor shot looks to have handed the German the chance to break. And he misses it! The ball bobbled off the net, Murray's return was lacklustre but Zverev went for the drop shot and couldn't control it.

Another double fault! And Zverev misses the drop shot again! Murray gets his first advantage with a forehand winner, before Zverev skews another shot. The Brit will hold.

  18. Murray breaks Zverevpublished at 05:02 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2017

    *Murray 5-7 2-0 Zverev

Zverev advances and Murray's eyes light up, but there's too much oomph in his forehand. Good stuff from Murray though, swatting Zverev's serve past him the same way you'd swat at an irritating fly.

The German is still constantly coming forward but it's not going his way and Murray has to break points. And he's done it! A hearty smash secures him the break.

    Murray 5-7 1-0 Zverev*

Quick hands get Murray on the board before Zverev slices his backhand into the net. The German is still aggressive at the net, taking advantage of Murray's second serve and a drop shot suits him nicely.

Zverev tries a pick up shot from right on the baseline but it drops short. An endlessly long rally is controlled by Murray, and Zverev eventually floats his backhand out. Murray holds.

  20. 'Zverev playing cat and mouse....'published at 04:56 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2017

John-Laffnie de Jager, Heather Watson’s coach, on 5 live sports extra: “Zverev has played some good tennis, making a lot of balls and executing his game plan well. He’s putting Andy under a lot of pressure. I'd tell Andy, 'Stick to your plan – how are you going to take the net away from your opponent?' He’s playing cat and mouse with him, and that’s exactly what Mischa wants. Andy needs to play some more aggressive tennis and take the net away from him.”
