These are the points that the British team would be wanting to avoid with Dan Evans stuck miles behind the baseline.

    *Chardy 5-1 Evans

Chardy is giving Evans the run-around here, twice sending him the wrong way before smashing an overhead winner. However Evans draws the errors out, forcing Chardy to net, and suddenly he's got two break points.

The Frenchman saves the first as Evans goes down the line and misses, and then the Brit slices a ferocious forehand from deep behind the baseline into the net. Deuce. We've been here before...

    *Chardy 5-1 Evans

Finally, Chardy makes an error from Evans' serve, trying to dink a backhand return and instead sending the ball into the crowd. He responds with a ferocious backhand that Evans knows he won't get near.

There's a tussle back and forth as we get to deuce, Evans twice getting the advantage before Chardy eventually over-hits. It's taken 28 minutes, but Dan Evans is finally on the board.

    Chardy 5-0 Evans*

Yannick Noah gives Chardy another animated pep talk, while a more subdued Evans and Leon Smith have a chat. Evans is serving but Chardy is just one game away from taking the first set.

    Chardy 5-0 Evans*

Chardy's serve looks all sorts of awkward - all arms and elbows and awkward angles - but he's used it to great effect. Evans is sprawling to meet yet another pacey serve, and the ball flies out of play. A speedy love hold for the Frenchman.

  6. Djokovic wins with easepublished at 16:11 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Serbia v Spain

Elsewhere,  Novak Djokovic has seen off Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-3 6-4 6-2 in Belgrade.

And the world number two has extended his winning streak in Davis Cup singles rubbers to 12 matches - he has not lost since 2011.

Serbia take a 1-0 lead in that quarter-final tie in Belgrade, with the winner due to play Great Britain or France in September's semi-finals.

  7. Chardy breakspublished at 16:10 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    *Chardy 4-0 Evans

Another break point goes begging for Chardy as he hammers his forehand long. Both players look tired already, before Evans unfurls a lovely backhand that spins down the line, beyond Chardy. Advantage Evans, again. And it'll go begging, again, as Chardy beats him with the forehand!

Up to the net comes Evan but Chardy is having none of it, and the Frenchman will finally get the break! Evans' drop shot can't clear the net and Chardy will take a 4-0 lead.

    Chardy 3-0 Evans

Evans isn't quite hitting his mark with the first serve and his return to Chardy's perfectly placed forehand is a backhand that slices into the net. Chardy can't make the break point count though, and we're back to 40-40.

This is a little sloppy from both players now, Evans double faulting on his serve before Chardy tamely returns into the net. Advantage Evans - and it goes to waste as another forehand finds the net! Deuce again...

  9. Deucepublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    *Chardy 3-0 Evans

Evans gets maybe a hair's breadth in front as he hammers a glorious forehand beyond Chardy, before Chardy places two returns with pinpoint accuracy into the corners of the court. There's then a long wait for some spectators to sit down before both players trade forehand blows. Deuce.

It's not going to plan on the court at the minute, but in the fancy dress race, GB are ahead!

    Chardy 3-0 Evans*

Chardy looks in ominous touch. He's moving around well and he's adapted to a clay court quicker than Evans. His serve is a little off, losing his balance slightly, but he races through his service game to hold to love.

  12. Early break for Chardypublished at 15:56 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    *Chardy 2-0 Evans

Evans takes his time, waiting for the crowd to sit down, which brings about some ooh's from the spectators. It's a loose service game from Evans though, putting too much on his forehand, and Chardy's raced to two break points.

Evans saves the first with an ace before his backhand slice floats inches wide. An early break for Chardy!

    Chardy 1-0 Evans*

This is Jeremy Chardy's first Davis Cup tie since 2011, but he's won all three of his singles rubbers in the competition. It's a mixed start from both players, Chardy giving Evans the run around before Evans hammers a forehand past him. A big serve means Chardy will hold first up.

    Chardy v Evans

Here we go. Warm-ups done, Dan Evans has a higher ranking than Jeremy Chardy but he's not comfortable on clay. Can he get Great Britain on the board in this Davis Cup tie?

It'll be Jeremy Chardy to serve first.

And in Belgrade, Serbia's Novak Djokovic leads Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas by two sets, courtesy of a 6-3 6-4 scoreline.

  18. Evans ready to overcome clay strugglespublished at 15:42 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    France v GB

Kyle Edmund's favourite surface is clay - Dan Evans, on the other hand, can't stand the stuff.

Evans hasn't played a match on clay for two years, and has sought the advice of Tim Henman on how to bring his aggressive game to a clay surface.

"I didn't need to play on it over the past two years, so I stuck to my favoured surface. It's not a matter of avoiding it," Evans told BBC Sport.

"I still have to be aggressive. I have to get forward and make the other guy move."

Australia got off to a flying start in their Davis Cup quarter-final against USA in Brisbane.

Underdog Jordan Thompson, ranked 79 in the world, pulled off a huge shock beating world number 15 Jack Sock 6-3 3-6 7-6 6-4.

Nick Kyrgios then gave Australia a 2-0 lead with a 7-5 7-6 7-6 victory over John Isner.

And team captain Lleyton Hewitt looked rather happy with their efforts.
