    Edmund 5-7 2-3 Pouille*

Nice from Edmund, going down the line with a stonking forehand, before a fiery ace surprises Pouille. A nice rally goes Edmund's way, the Briton curving his forehand and drawing the error out of his opponent. A good hold from Edmund.

    *Edmund 5-7 1-3 Pouille

Pouille is so good up at the net. Edmund does well to meet the first volley, Pouille playing it close from his body, but he hasn't got a chance of getting near the second. Down comes the big serve before a frustrated Edmund skews his forehand out. A love hold for Pouille.

Edmund needs to put the short forehand which effectively cost him the first set out of his mind as quickly as possible.

Pouille is visibly growing in confidence, but he has even less Davis Cup experience than Edmund and is playing in front of a partisan home crowd in the competition for the first time.

    Edmund 5-7 1-2 Pouille*

Back on Edmund's serve and he looks a little more comfortable, the big forehand appearing twice and forcing Pouille to go long. Pouille looks a little irked as he sends another floaty backhand into the net, and Edmund will hold.

Pouille has undoubtedly found his rhythm now. He's through his service game in the blink of an eye.

  6. Pouille gets early breakpublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Edmund 5-7 0-1 Pouille*

A bobble off the net puts Pouille 0-30 up before he gets his angles all wrong, a tame forehand sailing down the line and out. Pouille gets some supreme spin on his backhand - the sort of revs a cricketer would be proud of - as he whirls the ball past Edmund.

Too much on that forehand from Edmund, and the early break will go to Pouille.

  7. 'Steely look in Edmund's eye'published at 13:56 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Jamie Baker
Former GB Davis Cup player on BBC Two

On this clay court, I can see a real steely look in Kyle Edmund's eye. Good signs for the Brits.

We can also see there are two big banks of British support in what is quite a small stadium. A lot of encouragement for Edmund and still all to play for in this match.

    *Edmund 5-7 Pouille

Leon Smith is going over tactics with Kyle Edmund, with a bit of arm-waving. Lucas Pouille has taken a long slurp of water before wandering back to his mark.

Kyle Edmund will serve to get the second set underway.

Pouille races to a 30-0 lead before Edmund puts all his frustration into an overhead swipe that gets him onto the board. Pouille tries to float his backhand past Edmund but there's too much on it, before he recovers with two nice forehands.

Edmund goes long - and that's out! Pouille will take the first set.

    Edmund 5-6 Pouille

Right, Lucas Pouille is on serve. He's had a pep talk from Yannick Noah. He's got the crowd on his side.

    Edmund 5-6 Pouille*

    Jonathan Overend

Interesting crowd the French with the Davis Cup. They can be very vocal when their team is winning but they can turn easily.

The French are often better away from home, they feel less pressure.

  12. Pouille breakspublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Edmund 5-6 Pouille*

Advantage Pouille as Edmund goes down the line and gets his angle all wrong. Edmund saves it with an ace, but he's on the back foot again when he nets.

Edmund's in control of the rally, he's got Pouille running the wrong way - and he misses his forehand! Too much power on it and it's bounced out. There's a huge roar from Pouille and the crowd. That's a real miss from Edmund.

  13. Postpublished at 13:46 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Edmund 5-5 Pouille*

A grunt of frustration from Pouille as he tries to push Edmund deep behind the baseline and ends up sending the ball out. It's all level on 30-30 though as Edmund overhits his forehand.

Pouille is taking control of the rallies now, a fine overhead securing him a break point. Edmund stands and delivers, saving the point with a forehand winner. Deuce.

    *Edmund 5-5 Pouille

Leon Smith and Yannick Noah have incredibly intense faces when watching tennis. Smith is the happier of the pair as Edmund works his way to a 15-30 lead, before he returns Pouille's powerful serve into the net. An ace from Pouille, and he'll hold his serve.

Jamie:  Great start from Kyle I reckon - break each but I would say that Kyle's was better earned. Bodes well!

Peter Kingston:  Let's go Kyle Edmund in the Davis Cup. Solid start for British Tennis.

    Edmund 5-4 Pouille*

Pouille challenges a forehand winner from Edmund, which means the umpire has to leap down from her chair and examine the court. It's in, though. Now it's Edmund that's up to the net, a nice overhead sending Pouille one way before Edmund slices his forehand the other. Nice stuff from the Brit to hold to love.

    *Edmund 4-4 Pouille

This is in danger of becoming an ode to Edmund's forehand, but that is an obscenely lovely bit of work cross court from the Brit. Pouille responds with some supreme reactions up at the net. He's super close to the net as Edmund batters a forehand to him, and it looks like it might beat him until his lightning quick hands dink the ball back over.

  19. Postpublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Edmund 4-3 Pouille*

Edmund angles his serve to secure his first ace of the match, before going too big with a forehand and finding the net. He gets it right the second time, though, and he'll hold his serve. It's a fairly even contest so far.
