Wow. No Makarova looks nervy she misses an absolute sitter which would have given her break point.

But she makes amends with the following two points, a third break point in this game...

    *Kerber 2-6 1-3 Makarova

    Brilliant from Kerber.

Down two break points again she fights back to deuce, saving the second with a forehand winner down the line.

The German fails to close out the game though as Makarova follows a big return with a smash winner. Deuce.

    *Kerber 2-6 1-3 Makarova

Hope for Kerber? Just her third break point of the match.

It comes and goes though as Makarova hits a backhand winner.

Another error from Makarova. Is she starting to get tight?

What a winner! Kerber hits a great passing shot beyond Makarova's reach and gets one of the breaks back.

It's going to be very difficult for Kerber now because she doesn't have big weapons to hit back.

At her best she's very consistent and tenacious in the way she fights for every ball, but her confidence is low and those strengths have been stripped away and she has no answers.

    Kerber 2-6 0-3 Makarova*

It is all falling apart for Angelique Kerber. We believe this would be the FIRST TIME the world number one has lost in the opening round at Roland Garros.

  8. Stan arrives, Angie leaving?published at 12:31 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

Stan Wawrinka has just arrived at Roland Garros, fresh from his title win in Geneva yesterday - asked why he plays the week before a Slam, the Swiss responded: "It's near my home, so I have a lot of friends and family at the tournament, and I won a lot of matches." Makes sense.

Meanwhile, Kerber looks increasingly forlorn up against the big, flat winners flying past her from the Makarova racquet. There was a real feeling beforehand that the world number one was an outsider for her first-round match, a pretty extraordinary situation.

  9. Makarova breaks againpublished at 12:31 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

    Kerber 2-6 0-3 Makarova*

Kerber is really struggling. She double faults as a second serve goes way, way long.

The German is rushing through her points. Two more forehand errors and that is another break for Makarova who now leads by a set and a double break.

    *Kerber 2-6 0-2 Makarova

Of course this would be a shock if world number one Angelique Kerber was knocked out in the first round.

Makarova has pedigree though. She is an Olympic gold medallist in doubles and won the women's doubles at Roland Garros in 2013.

A comfortable hold. Makarova is two games to the good in this second set.

  11. Makarova breakspublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

    Kerber 2-6 0-1 Makarova*

Kerber saves the first break point by using all of her reach to get a volley over the net.

Another one saved as Makarova hits wide.

Not this time! Makarova with another forehand winner.

The Russian leads by a set and a break against the world number one.

    Uh oh.

Worrying signs right at the start of the second set for Kerber.

    Three break points for Makarova...

    Kerber 2-6 Makarova

A penny for Angelique Kerber's thoughts as she sits in her chair at the end of that first set.

She hit just four winners compared to her opponents 10 and 12 unforced errors to Makarova's four.

Can she fight back? She's going to have to improve or she'll be the first big name to fall in this year's tournament.

  14. Hints of a Kerber fightback?published at 12:21 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

    Leon Smith

There were signs at the end of the set that perhaps Kerber threw a bit of caution to the wind and started to be more aggressive and take a few more calculated risks, and she got some return from that.

But overall Makarova deserves to be a set up. She has hit the ball better and if she carries on like that she remains favourite, but Kerber showed signs that she can turn it around.

  15. Game and first setpublished at 12:18 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

    Kerber 2-6 Makarova

Another forehand error from Makarova gives Kerber another chance to break but she misses the opportunity.

Makarova earns herself a second set point and takes it this time.

The world number one is a set down in the first round of the 2017 French Open.

    Kerber 2-5 Makarova*

Kerber saves the first set point of the match, taking us back to deuce.

Under pressure, Makarova puts a forehand wide into the tramlines. Advantage Kerber.

What's happened there?! A horribly tight second serve from Makarova is floated into the middle of the service box and Kerber skews her return out. Deuce.

    Kerber 2-5 Makarova*

Take nothing away from world number 40 Ekaterina Makarova. She is playing against the world number one in the first round of a Grand Slam, that brings pressure to anyone.

For all of Kerber's problems, Makarova is playing really well. Kerber fights back to 30-30 but an ace from the Russian gives her set point...

  18. Practice partnerspublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

    Piers Newbery
    BBC Sport in Paris

Kerber and Makarova were practising at the same time on Chatrier this morning, always a slightly odd sight to see two imminent opponents hitting on different halves of the same court. It appears to have benefited the Russian more. Kerber was doing her best to be cheerful in her pre-tournament press, saying she had been practising fine and was just waiting for the match play to kick in. She's still waiting.

    Kerber 2-5 Makarova*

Just over 20 minutes has been played but the world number one is serving to stay in this first set in the opening round of the French Open.

That's better. Kerber lives to fight for another game at least, taking just her second game of the match with a trademark forehand down the line.

  20. Postpublished at 12:07 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

    *Kerber 1-5 Makarova

World number one Angelique Kerber is really struggling out there in the early stages, her opponent is forcing the play.

As I said earlier Kerber is really struggling for form. She has lost in the last 16 twice and once in the last 32 of her last three tournaments.

The German doesn't get a look in during the next game as Makarova holds.
