    The British number four is up against Tommy Robredo a veteran of the tennis circuit.

    The 35-year-old is a clay court specialist and is a five-time quarter-finalist at the French Open.

    In comparison this is Evans' is in the main draw in Paris for the first time and is not a fan of the surface, despite winning two matches in Barcelona earlier this year.

    Hello again.

    A retirement out on Court Two means Britain's Dan Evans is heading out to play at Roland Garros a little earlier than expected, we're back to take you through it.

    Evans is the world number 55, playing the world number 271. Should be easy right?

    What a morning that was. It started with an emotional victory for Petra Kvitova in her first match back after being stabbed during a burglary, and was followed by world number one Angelique Kerber being dumped out.

    Just what has gone wrong for Angelique Kerber?

    It has all gone downhill since she overtook Serena Williams as world number one in September.

    She won two Grand Slam titles in 2016 but has reached just one WTA final in 2017.

    She may well lose her world number one crown to Karolina Pliskova or Simona Halep by the end of this Grand Slam.

    It got very nervy in that second set with a number of service breaks but that's a fully deserved win for world number 40 Ekaterina Makarova.

    26 winners to Kerber's 16, 19 unforced errors to her opponent's 25. Victory in one hour 22 minutes.

    To add to the tension the umpire gives Makarova a time violation for taking too long between serves.

    The crowd are into this now. The ball crunches off Makarova's racquet as she saves another break point.

    Makarova is clearly not at world number 40 level but Kerber's lack of confidence has led to unforced errors and the weakest part of her game is the second serve which she's hardly been hitting and Makarova, a good returner, is not letting her get away with it.

    This is a big moment. Kerber has the bit between the teeth and is definitely playing better. Makarova is still in control but there are some signs that Kerber senses she can get back into this match.
