Makarova knows Kerber is out of form and under pressure to win matches. She is aggressive, dancing around on returns and looks ready to cause an upset.

Right then. After that victory for Petra Kvitova, attention turns to the world number one.

If you are looking for a shock in the women's draw, look no further than this one.
Germany's Kerber has really struggled this year. She is world number one but has really struggled this year, going out in the early stages in a number of events.
In fact she is only 13th in the Road to Singapore season rankings. Add to that the fact Makarova is ranked 40th in the world, this is a very difficult first round draw indeed.

A quick look at the stats shows just how impressive that was from Petra Kvitova.
She hit 31 winners and nine aces. That is surely better than she could have ever imagined considering she was not expected to play in this event.

What she has just done really is remarkable. Six months ago there were serious doubts over whether she could continue her career.

The Kvitova camp, wearing t-shirts emblazoned with 'courage' and 'belief', looked understandably thrilled just to be back on court watching their player, with every searing forehand winner cheered to the rafters. From her agent to her coach to her fitness trainer and family, it's been a team effort getting Kvitova - a player who struggled for motivation early last year - back in physical and mental shape.
It's really just a bonus right now, but she also played superbly.

So much as gone on in tennis already in 2017 but this is another remarkable story.
Six months after an injury in a knife attack, Petra Kvitova is serving for the match at a Grand Slam.

Kvitova has played an excellent match on serve. She's not in the rallying rhythm she might need to go deep into the tournament.
But she will be playing pretty free because she never imagined being here in the first place but she will need to step up a level.
