    Kerber 1-4 Makarova*

Break point saved by Kerber but here is another chance for Makarova.

Long from the German! Makarova breaks again. The Russian now has a double break in this first set against the world number one.

Makarova knows Kerber is out of form and under pressure to win matches. She is aggressive, dancing around on returns and looks ready to cause an upset.

    *Kerber 1-3 Makarova

A sixth winner for Makarova inside five games gives her the perfect start to the next game.

She then gets to 0-30 by forcing Kerber into a mistake off the backhand side. Danger for the world number one.

Makarova is frustrated though as she gives away a couple of cheap points to give Kerber 40-30.

The Russian is back on her game, two more excellent points set up another break point.

    *Kerber 1-3 Makarova

Makarova is the much taller player of the two and is looking to hit winners past the scampering Kerber.

The Russian seals another game with a big serve down the middle. Her height definitely helps her with that shot.

    Kerber 1-2 Makarova*

That should help Kerber. A comfortable hold of serve gets a game on the board.

    *Kerber 0-2 Makarova

This match is a little strange in the fact that it sees two left-handers facing each other.

Makarova has definitely started the more aggressively and holds serve in the second game.

    Kerber v Makarova

Right then. After that victory for Petra Kvitova, attention turns to the world number one.

Angelique Kerber is on court warming up, preparing to face Russia's Ekaterina Makarova.

If you are looking for a shock in the women's draw, look no further than this one.

Germany's Kerber has really struggled this year. She is world number one but has really struggled this year, going out in the early stages in a number of events.

In fact she is only 13th in the Road to Singapore season rankings. Add to that the fact Makarova is ranked 40th in the world, this is a very difficult first round draw indeed.

    Kvitova 6-3 6-2 Boserup

A quick look at the stats shows just how impressive that was from Petra Kvitova.

She hit 31 winners and nine aces. That is surely better than she could have ever imagined considering she was not expected to play in this event.

Petra Kvitova speaking after her win over Julia Boserup: "It is a pleasure to be here. I am glad I made this decision to play here. My team helped me through this difficult time, I will always be grateful.

"We didn't really have time to practice, two or three weeks maximum. There are a few things to improve. I am really happy with how I played but it doesn't really matter how I played, I won."

As Piers says Kvitova's support team have unveiled t-shirts with courage and belief written on the front.

What she has just done really is remarkable. Six months ago there were serious doubts over whether she could continue her career.

Now she won a match at a Grand Slam.

The Kvitova camp, wearing t-shirts emblazoned with 'courage' and 'belief', looked understandably thrilled just to be back on court watching their player, with every searing forehand winner cheered to the rafters. From her agent to her coach to her fitness trainer and family, it's been a team effort getting Kvitova - a player who struggled for motivation early last year - back in physical and mental shape.

It's really just a bonus right now, but she also played superbly.

    *Kvitova 6-3 5-2 Boserup

So much as gone on in tennis already in 2017 but this is another remarkable story.

Six months after an injury in a knife attack, Petra Kvitova is serving for the match at a Grand Slam.

Kvitova has played an excellent match on serve. She's not in the rallying rhythm she might need to go deep into the tournament.

But she will be playing pretty free because she never imagined being here in the first place but she will need to step up a level.

    *Kvitova 6-3 5-2 Boserup

Kvitova hits her 13 forehand winner of the match, landing the ball flush on the baseline.

And another! This is remarkable. That's her 30th winner off both sides in the match and it takes us to deuce. Another big shout of encouragement to herself, clenching her fists as she does so.

That's what the Czech player was after. An unforced error from Boserup and Kvitova has the double break.
