    Kvitova 4-1 Boserup*

Three break points pass for American Boserup as Kvitova manages to hold.

A fist pump, a stare towards her support team and a shout on "come on" from the Czech.

She may already think she has won her biggest fight to get here but she is battling hard out there.

A big 'lefty' serve and a devastating forehand have been the hallmarks of the early part of Petra Kvitova's career.

Her winner tally is into double figures already here. There is another! A quite brilliant forehand on the run gets through the defence of Boserup.

Danger here though as a return winner from Boserup sets up break point.

Kvitova's attitude has been wonderfully upbeat and defiant. She's shown no sense of self-pity despite this devastating attack which came completely out of the blue.

It would have been easy to take yourself away from the world but she said from the start 'I'll be back' and she's shown a wonderful attitude.

She wouldn't accept that she would have to walk away from the sport that she loves.

    *Kvitova 3-1 Boserup

The first break point is saved by Boserup as a backhand sails wide off the racquet of Kvitova.

A deep second serve from the American does enough to take us to deuce.

Kvitova misses another chance to break serve but Boserup looks to have settle a little and wins the next two points to get her first game on the board.

Kvitova has not played a match since a defeat to Caroline Garcia in the Fed Cup back in November but she is hitting winners off both wings.

It's a world-class player against a journeywoman but obviously circumstances make this match very different.

Kvitova is a double Wimbledon champion but she could have won more with her game.

The cleanness with which she strikes the ball has always been extraordinary and she uses her left-handedness very well, especially on the serve to take players out of the court.

    Kvitova 3-0 Boserup*

Kvitova's Mum, Dad and two brothers are all court side to see her return.

Bang, bang, bang. Two aces plus a forehand winner and the Czech left-hander has another game on the board.

I doubt she thought the first eight minutes of her comeback would go that well.

    *Kvitova 2-0 Boserup

Kvitova certainly seems to be striking the ball well early on.

She is putting Boserup - who is playing at Roland Garros for the first time - under pressure right from the start.

The American is unsurprisingly a little nervy and a double fault sets up break point.

Another crunching forehand from Kvitova gives her the break of serve.

If that doesn't settle Kvitova down nothing will. A huge forehand winner to take the opening point.

A double fault follows but with two more winners the world number 16 takes the opening game.

    The perfect start.

"It's nice to see you all again. I missed you guys. That's funny, but I did."

You know a player is desperate to get back in the action when they're happy to see the assembled media in front of them at a press conference. Petra Kvitova has never been the confrontational type, widely hailed as the nicest player on tour, and her return after a horrific knife attack in December is already one of the stories of the tournament.

Being scheduled first up on the main Chatrier court usually guarantees a mere sprinkling of spectators - they don't exactly rush to their seats here - but Kvitova is likely to have the support of a French player for as long as she stays in the tournament.

Petra Kvitova and her American opponent Julia Boserup are out to warm-up on Court Philippe Chatrier.

The stands are by no means full but the Czech player has a broad smile as her name is called and she walks out to a ripple of applause.

It has been a difficult few months for Petra Kvitova to say the least.

The 27-year-old suffered a career-threatening hand injury in December after being stabbed by an intruder in her home.

By returning to action, Kvitova said she had already won her on her arrival at Roland Garros but admits she is not back to full health.

"I know that my hand is still not 100% ready, so we will see how everything goes, but I'm happy that I'm able to play again.

"Of course the hand doesn't have that power and the strength yet, but I'm working on it. Hopefully one day everything will be perfect. But we never know still."

Security is not surprisingly tight - three bag checks and two scans on the 10-minute walk from the Porte d'Auteuil metro stop, but once inside the atmosphere is as sultry and snoozy as the rest of Paris on a Sunday morning. This is the smallest of the four Grand Slams in terms of the size of the grounds, and can be hellish for spectators when it rains, but on a sunny day it's hard to match.
