    Wawrinka 2-6 3-6 1-2 Nadal*

Rafa runs backwards like he is doing a sprint drill over ladders, moving into position quickly to arrow an inside-out forehand back past the Swiss.

That's 15-30, and it becomes 30-30 when Wawrinka goes long. Chance gone? Possibly.

A forehand winner puts Rafa within a point, only for Stan to dig out one of his own. Deuce...

Four more service holds will do it for Rafa then. It might even be fewer. Stan needs a break point, and he has only seen one of them in the whole match.

Now then... the noise levels increase. That's because Stan is 30-0 ahead on the Spaniard's serve...

Stan's two sets and a break down, he needs to go out swinging. He needs to just hit a few winners.

    Wawrinka 2-6 3-6 1-2 Nadal*

This is a masterclass. Rafa Nadal clubs a double-handed backhand down the line for 15-15, leaving the Chatrier crowd almost open-mouthed again.

If this isn't Rafa's absolute best then he is not far behind it.

Stan nudges 30-15 and then 40-30 ahead, showing the battling qualities which we all know he has.

The Swiss cracks another forehand winner to narrow the gap in what, one suspects, will be the final set.

The sun is still shining on the clay and on Nadal.

A wee little net volley, with a bit of backspin, lands delicately past Wawrinka for 30-0.

Can Rafa hold to love? Oh yes, and he does it with a 99 mph forehand winner.

This match is turning out to be a lost cause for Stan Wawrinka,. He has no belief. He looks like a man who has no confidence of turning this around whatsoever.

    Wawrinka 2-6 3-6 0-1 Nadal*

Wawrinka offers up the first point of his serve to his opponent and then, after a brilliant rally, the Swiss hits long past the baseline. It's 0-30.

And another forehand goes over the chalk. Nadal has triple break point.

One is saved when the Spaniard shanks a shot into space. I'm not sure it's come down to earth yet.

But a beautiful forehand winner from an on-rushing Nadal sees him steal another game from Wawrinka.

    Cruise control.

    Wawrinka 2-6 3-6 Nadal

Rafa isn't going to let this one slip. Not in this form. He doesn't.

Someone throw Stan a harness and a pair of climbing boots. He is stood at the bottom of tennis' equivalent of Mount Everest.

You things aren't going your way when you resort to hitting your bonce with your racquet. Ouch. That's what Stan does after planting a forehand into the tape following a baseline rally.

He forces Rafa into a loose backhand to level at 15-15, but then two more unforced errors put Nadal on the verge.

Stan snaps, his racquet snaps. That one wasn't working anyway.

    Two set points to Nadal...

Not surprisingly, Team Stan have a collective look of resignation about them in the player box. Coach Magnus Norman, girlfriend Donna Vekic, management and family all have their chins resting glumly on their hands for the most part. They have been to three Grand Slam finals and have yet to see their man lose, but that run is in serious danger now. A Swiss fan attempts a yodel but quickly thinks better of it. Not so much as a "Hop Suisse!" from the Stan Army recently.

Whenever Rafa has gone 15-0 up on a Stan service game, he has won the break. He's 15-0 up. Make that 30-0 up.

Any hope for Stan? He's back to 15-30, then 30-30 after a great second serve down the middle which bamboozles Rafa.

A hefty first serve down the middle is met by Nadal's racquet, but the ball flies off court..40-30.

And a forehand winner from the stoic Swiss holds Rafa at bay for another game at the very least.

Stan has been nowhere near a break in this set. Unless he has stash of Kit Kats in his bag. No would be a good time to find one. A break of serve that is, not a Kit Kat.

Nope, Rafa isn't having it. A beast of a backhand puts him 40-0 ahead, then the Spaniard whacks an ace down the T to seal it.

The nine-time champion is a game away from the second set...

An easy hold. That's what Stan is praying for here. The Swiss looks to be doing that at 40-15...

Oh. My. Word! Nadal produces a tennis shot that even a computer game could not create.

Stan batters back a backhand deep and wide, somehow Rafa reaches it to whip a forehand winner around the net post and inside the line.

Sensational stuff. The BBC Sport office almost gave that one a standing ovation. That's when you know it's good,

But ultimately it matters little in this game...Stan holds.

The Chatrier crowd are trying their best to encourage Wawrinka. Well, those non-Spanish fans are. They are backing the French-speaking Swiss, not least because they don't want to be short-changed this afternoon.

Right then... 30-30. Stan has a sniff on Rafa's serve, but he then overcooks a backhand from the baseline.

Rafa's second serve at 40-30 kicks off the red stuff into Stan's body, the Swiss bending his body like a contortionist to knock it back to safety. A baseline rally breaks out, Rafa still pinning the Swiss back, Wawrinka blinking first as he goes long.
