    Wawrinka 2-6 1-3 Nadal*

A-ha! Stan Wawrinka is in the building. The backhand winner returns for the Swiss, putting him 30-0 ahead, then another backhand down the line is walloped out of the court by Nadal.

Ouch! Rafa responds with a ripper of a forehand winner down the line. "This is getting scary," says television commentator Jim Courier...

Stan slaps his forehead, then runs his plam through his hair. He isn't too spooked though, seeing out the hold to get on the board in this second set.

Alex Haworth‏: Just ridiculously good from Nadal. Nothing Wawrinka can do against this.

Dennis Ethan‏: Can't see Rafa Nadal losing a set when the forehand is firing, just too good for Stan Wawrinka.

Joe Kabyemela‏: Nadal a different class now. Long way to go but looking ominous for Wawrinka.

Even a protractor wouldn't be able to produce some of these angles that Rafa Nadal is creating.

Nadal cruises 40-0 ahead, Stan getting a point back after an unforced error from the Spaniard, before Rafa rummages around in the top drawer again.

An inside out forehand whizzes cross-court well out of Stan's reach. Even Stretch Armstrong would have struggled to return that one.

Andy Murray said after their semi-final that he didn't have have enough weight of shot to keep Wawrinka on the backfoot, allowing the Swiss to step inside the baseline and tee off on forehand and backhand. That is not a problem for Nadal.

Always desperate to "play long", the Spaniard is dominating with his forehand and making Wawrinka hit from higher and further back than is comfortable.

This is why Nadal is the greatest. Wawrinka is just getting into the points then.. boom. Nadal ups the ante with that fizzing forehand, leaving Stan on the stretch.

A forehand winner brings up three more break points, leaving Stan unable to do anything other than put a ball in his mouth like he is eating a Granny Smith's.

Nadal wraps it up. Stan plants a forehand into the net and Rafa is coasting!

In this game, you can see both players are trying to dig in without making any errors.

It's a tricky time for Stan as he hasn't found consistency yet. He's trying to get some rhythm but Rafa is so aggressive.

A great point from Wawrinka nudges him 15-0 ahead at the start of this second set, a forehand winner doing the damage. That's more like it Stan.

Ah. Then drops his racquet into the red stuff after losing a point at 15-15, it going back into his hands like a bouncy ball.

Focus Stan. That he does, scampering forward to meet a stretching Rafa backhand at the net with a forehand winner...30-30.

Rafa gets a time warning for taking longer than 20 seconds between service points... it barely registers. The Spaniard goes through his normal routine - and it works. He holds.

Amanda Price: Nadal looks unstoppable. He has that look of stubborn determination.

Roy Biakpara: Watching this I am seeing Nadal down those tramlines like a hungry lion. Those steps when he wins or loses a point.

Sachin Chandra: Rafa is in full swing.

    Wawrinka 2-6 0-0 Nadal*

While Rafa sits down in the shade, Stan is back up on his feet and at the baseline. He wants to atone that first set, and he wants to do it quickly.

The Swiss third seed made just four winners in that 45-minute opener, none coming from his famed backhand. And he made 17 unforced errors...

That last point was obvious. At the moment Wawrinka is struggling to adjust to the heat, the bounce and the Rafa top-spin.

Got it! Rafa does not even need to serve out for the opening set. Stan lumps a forehand long after a brief baseline rally, Rafa roars, Chatrier cheers.

He is a third of the way to La Decima!

New balls please. Stan Wawrinka is serving to stay in this opening set.

Chatrier looks like it is hosting a Man From Del Monte Convention. Loads of white straw hats. Even Gustavo Kuerten is sporting one. He's super-cool.

Nadal is within one more game of the first set. An ace - his third of the match - puts him 30-15 up, then steps into the net on game point to plant in a backhand volley. Stan doesn't bother running.

    That's an important break.

It's a bit scrappy at the back of the court. When you're in that situation, with the balls in your hand, you know you can get one or two points just from your serve, that's enough to get you over the line until things settle down.

Rafa Nadal has the break! Stan can't get a forehand back across to safety. His face looks like that of a bloke who has just ran to work and then realised on arrival that he has forgotten his towel for a shower.

Stan Wawrinka survived in his previous service game. Now he has some more serious problems.

It's scrappy stuff so far from both men, rather unexpectedly. The odd gust of wind is getting up now, which is nice for spectators but might be disrupting the players' rhythm a little. Fans are still being wafted all around Chatrier though, and the president of the French Tennis Federation has taken it upon himself to keep Nicole Kidman entertained and informed all afternoon.
