A very fine performance by Edmund after a dodgy start. He was on a hiding to nothing going up against a fellow Brit. He started badly, a set down but had faith in his ability to come back.

His game improved, he was aggressive in the right way and his serve got better. This will do him the power of good. Ward ran out of gas. He looked fatigued, but has made a bit of money and hopefully now he can push his ranking up.

    Edmund 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-1 Ward

With an overhead smash, Kyle Edmund becomes the fifth Briton to make it through to the second round.

That's the 22-year-old's first ever win at Wimbledon. Well done that man.

Alex Ward, meanwhile, walks off to big applause from the court three crowd.

    Edmund 4-6 6-3 6-2 5-1 Ward

Kyle Edmund lands a brutal forehand winner for 0-30. He's a couple of inches off the ground as he smashes it past Ward.

Edmund challenges a call on Ward's serve and he's right. The point is replayed and goes to young Kyle.

    Three match points.

    *Del Potro 6-3 3-6 5-5 Kokkinakis

Excellent defence from Del Potro deep behind the baseline but Kokkinakis steps up to fire an impressive forehand winner for 15-15.

An ugly heave after a poor serve hands Delpo a chance but the Argentian's own ugly heave makes it 30-30.

A great deep serve sets up an easy smash for the Aussie but the next point sees Del Potro land a sumptuous drop shot to make it deuce. Shot of the match contender there.

Pummelling forehand winner from Delpo brings up set point. Good serve from Kokkinakis to save.

The 21-year-old's 13th ace gives him game point and an easy forehand winner sees him pull off a vital hold. On we go.

    Edmund 4-6 6-3 6-2 5-1 Ward*

In a powerful rally, Kyle Edmund forces Alex Ward so far back behind the baseline he's almost in the stands. The world number 50 thinks he's nailed the winner, but hawkeye shows it was just out. Such a close call. Both players share a smile about that.

Edmund overpowers his opponent with some big ground strokes for 40-30 and then takes the game as Ward's effort wriggles wide.

Ward to serve to stay in the match.

  7. Falconi saves break pointpublished at 13:41 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    *Kerber 4-3 Falconi

Irina Falconi has some cracking reaction time at the net, all over a little rally, but the ball clips the net and doesn't land in her favour.

Another long rally and Kerber has to applaud as Falconi lobs the ball over her with inch-perfect precision.

Now Falconi takes the pace off and flicks the ball just past Kerber, a lovely flick of the wrists, but an overcooked backhand takes us to deuce.

Falconi's got into the groove though. Down the line for the advantage and a dinky drop to hold.

  9. Postpublished at 13:38 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    *Edmund 4-6 6-3 6-2 4-1 Ward

Alex Ward gives a wry smile to his compatriot after challenging a call on the baseline and getting it wrong.

A crowd-pleasing rally ensues, and a net-bound Edmund wins the point.

Another Ward double fault hands Edmund three break points.

One is saved with a Ward ace, another is saved with a delicate half-volley, and we go to deuce when Edmund hits wide.

Ward gives himself a mini celebration as he holds for the first time in this set.

    Del Potro 6-3 3-6 5-4 Kokkinakis*

Delpo looks to have put those foot-fault woes behind him on his serve but he misjudges a forehand to hand Kokkinakis a chance at 30-30.

Two good serves steers him away from danger though. The Aussies will have to serve to stay in the set.

  12. Postpublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    Kerber 4-2 Falconi*

    Billie Jean King
Six-time Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 live

Kerber is probably a little bit of an introvert, she says she needs time for herself and now she is starting to allow for it in her schedule. You have to become disciplined and I think she is doing that now.

  13. Postpublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    Kerber 4-2 Falconi*

That's better from Kerber, down on one knee and slashing a forehand down the line to beat Falconi.

There's the ace, and that's a solid hold for the world number one. There's no in-between for her at the minute - it either looks comfortable or awkward for her.

  14. Postpublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    Edmund 4-6 6-3 6-2 4-0 Ward*

Kyle Edmund thinks he's cruising to another love hold, but then he double faults.

    How does he respond? Ace!

  16. Postpublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    *Del Potro 6-3 3-6 4-4 Kokkinakis

Smart stuff from Kokkinakis, serving well and setting up easy finishes to points as he holds to love and we're level again.

Where will this ebb and/or flow next?

  17. Postpublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    *Kerber 3-2 Falconi

    Martina Navratilova
    Nine-time Wimbledon singles champion

Kerber has not been playing as the number one player all year, so losing the ranking might prove a blessing for her. But then she will want to win this tournament, which will keep her as the world number one!

Everybody has their pressure. Falconi has never been on Centre Court, this is all new to her. That is her pressure, Kerber has completely different kind of pressure. Everyone has some sort of pressure, it is how you cope with it that counts.

  18. Edmund breaks againpublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    *Edmund 4-6 6-3 6-2 3-0 Ward

Alex Ward looks weary - both physically and mentally. He overcooks a forehand past the baseline, and isn't able to get on the end of a powerful winner from Edmund.

The world number 50 has two break points, but both go abegging. Deuce.

The advantage falls to Edmund, and he takes the game with an exceedingly good backhand winner.

  19. Postpublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    *Kerber 3-2 Falconi

Kerber's coach is suddenly looking a bit grouchy. And no wonder. His charge has gone off the boil slightly.

Falconi sends her opponent running around the baseline and that lack of confidence that has dogged Kerber this year is on show as she loosely thwacks the ball wide. That's eight successive points for Irina Falconi.
