    Del Potro 4-1 Kokkinakis*

Kokkinakis finally starts to open up, crashing a forehand winner cross court.

Del Potro is still 30-15 up though and a shank from Kokkinakis makes it 40-15. Another miss from the Aussie gives Del Potro the game but some promising signs for the 21-year-old.

  2. Still quicker than Lendl...published at 12:03 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

Not sure what it is with Andy Murray's hip but, as soon as he steps on to the practice court, it seems to start to bother him.

He is fine when he is hitting balls but, in between drills or whenever he changes ends, he is dragging his feet like a toddler who is being forced to go around the supermarket by his mum.

On the upside, even then he is still moving quicker than his coach Ivan Lendl.

    Edmund 3-4 A Ward*

That's better from Edmund - a big serve, right into the corner of the court, and he races to a love hold.

He takes a long slurp of water, breathing heavily, as he sits back down.

Don't panic folks. I'm in. And I'm disappointed to report that I can't see a single Union Jack flag or knotted hankie over a scorched head.

    *Edmund 2-4 A Ward

Edmund stands tall, dictating the rally, but that's a superb save from Ward! Charging away to his right, he flicks a forehand at a lovely angle and the ball bounces right on the line. Not a lot Edmund could do about that.

Up to the net again from Ward, and a volley takes him to 40-15, before Edmund responds with a sterling, floaty backhand from up close. A good hold from Ward, though.

    *Del Potro 3-1 Kokkinakis

Kokkinakis is playing to Del Potro's strengths here with a series of poor second serves that the Argentinian can just climb into.

The Australian just about stays in a rally but Del Potro unfurls that thundering forehand to put him away and set up two more break points.

The first ends in the net and then Kokkinakis finds a deep forehand winner to get to deuce.

An excellent first serve sets up game point for Kokkinakis and Del Potro booms one long. Huge hold from the Aussie.

    Edmund 2-3 A Ward*

Edmund just hasn't found his rhythm yet. He comes out on top of a interlude at the net, dinking a forehand over with some ferocity, but that trusty forehand goes wide as he searches for the winner.

That's a good serve though, right into Ward's body, and he can only pat it out of play.

    Del Potro 3-0 Kokkinakis*

Del Potro consolidates the break with an impressive hold, even mixing it up by coming to the net as Kokkinakis continues to err.

Here's more from Alex's mum Sue, who is celebrating her 60th birthday whilst watching her son at Wimbledon.

Sue was hoping to be kept in the loop with how Alex's final qualifying match was going, but she only found out he made the main draw through a friend.

"It was complete and utter shock and I didn't find out until I got home from work. It was only by somebody texting me saying they had seen Alex on TV. I was thrilled, but I hadn't dared hope really."

"I'm full of pride and admiration that he's stuck at it for 11 years. He's come through injury and financial hardship and whatever happens today I hope he can build on it for the future.

"If he makes some really good shots, I'm not going to be able to contain myself."

The first love game of the match goes to Alex Ward. He batters through his service game, tidying it up with a forehand winner down the line, and gets a warm round of applause for his troubles.

    *Del Potro 2-0 Kokkinakis

Or maybe it won't be that intriguing. First opportunity he gets, Del Potro opens up some break points. Kokkinakis does well to recover but the Argentine reels off two more points to break.

    Edmund 1-2 A Ward*

Ward targets Edmund's backhand, drawing out the error, but Edmund's forehand can really fire.

He pushes Ward back behind the baseline, his opponent charging left and right before he slaps a return long to get Edmund on the board.

Ever get the feeling you are being watched?

Andy Murray must be used to it - there are more than 25 cameras trained on the defending champion as he goes through his stretching routine with conditioning coach Matt Little at the start of his practice session.

As usual, Murray is on court 15 at the Aorangi complex - it's his favourite because it is the most secluded... usually. Today a minibus-load of fans could not believe their luck as they peered through the fence of the adjacent car-park, and it was not long before cries of "come on Muzza" went up. They have left him to it now though.

    Del Potro 1-0 Kokkinakis*

Crowd favourite Juan Martin Del Porto gets his Wimbledon campaign under way against Thanasi Kokkinakis with a hold of serve.

The Argentinian is the number 29 seed here, but, as ever, a very dangerous play to have that far down the draw.

Kokkinakis is still raw at 21 but the Australian has plenty of ability. Could be an intriguing match.

    *Edmund 0-2 A Ward

Back and forth things swing in these opening stages, neither player completely settled.

Edmund is in control of a rally but a skewed forehand hands Ward an opening - and he takes it as he forces the forehand error out of Edmund. That first serve from Ward isn't fast, but Edmund's not timing it well.

    Edmund 0-1 A Ward*

    Jonathan Jurejko

Kyle Edmund and Alex Ward both look relaxed as they saunter past Centre Court and through the back door of Court Three, dressed identikit in traditional all-white gear and huge red racquet bags on their backs. No japes from the Brits though. Game faces only.

A huge ovation, audible from outside the open court, greets the pair. Why am I outside? Because the press seats are packed for this all-British clash.

  18. Ward gets early breakpublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    Edmund 0-1 A Ward*

What a start for Alex Ward!

Ward is moving about nicely and he darts forward for a smash at the net to bring up a break point, as Edmund looks a little shaky on his serve.

It's 30-40, Edmund throws the ball up - and double faults! An early break goes Alex Ward's way.

    Edmund v Ward

Kyle Edmund, of course, hasn't had the best run at Wimbledon. He's searching for his first win at SW19, having fallen in the first round on his previous four appearances.

Ward, meanwhile, is searching for his first Tour-level win. It'll be Edmund to serve first.

  20. Boris reflects on yesterday ...published at 11:40 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    Boris Becker
Three-time Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

I thought that Andy Murray showed he was fit enough to win. He had a wobble but the funny thing is that once the point started he was as fit as a fiddle, once it ended he started limping. I wasn't sure what to make of it.
