Some good news - Andy Murray has arrived at the practice courts, and his hip is showing no ill-effects from Monday's first-round win. He's actually moving easier than he was this time yesterday - as in he is not hobbling anymore.

Those ice baths seem to have done the trick, which bodes well for his next match, against extrovert Jamaican-German Dustin Brown, on Wednesday.

    Edmund v Ward

This is Alex Ward's lowest ranking since August 2009. He's the third-lowest ranked player in the men's draw, after James Ward (1085) and Andreas Haider-Maurer (1039).

Most importantly, though, it's mum Susan's 60th birthday - many happy returns!

  5. Kerber limbers up ahead of Centre bowpublished at 11:29 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    Kerber v Falconi (13:00 BST)

    Jonathan Jurejko
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

Not much chat from top seed Angelique Kerber as she prepares to open up on Centre Court later.

The German leftie, beaten in last year's final against the absent Serena Williams, gets the honour of kicking off the day two action on Wimbledon's iconic court.

Minimal chat between Kerber and her coach Torben Beltz, just a few grunts and nods of encouragement.

High fives all round mark the end of the session on Court 15 before she disappears.

Kerber had a bit of a nightmare clay-court season, and lost to Johanna Konta at Eastbourne last week, insisting she "starts at zero" here in SW19.

  8. Crunch time for Kerber & Pliskovapublished at 11:24 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    Piers Newbery
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

Day two sees the bottom half of the men's draw and the top half of the women's draw get under way, with top seed Angelique Kerber opening the show on Centre Court against American Irina Falconi.

With Serena Williams absent, you might think world number one Kerber would be a decent shout for the title, but even the German herself says she is "starting from zero" at Wimbledon after a disappointing year.

The woman in form is third seed Karolina Pliskova, who leads the women's serving charts for 2017 and backs it up with equally thumping, flat groundstrokes. But she's never been past round two in five attempts, so Evgeniya Rodina will feel she has a chance on Court One today.

  11. A birthday to rememberpublished at 11:14 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    Ellie Thomason
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

Celebrating your 60th whilst watching your son play in the main draw at Wimbledon is a birthday that probably won't be topped.

Susan Tarry, mother of world number 855 Alex Ward, is hoping it will be a day to remember when her son faces fellow Brit Kyle Edmund later today.

"I've got my sunglasses to hide behind because I will probably cry.

"I think I might pop some champagne if he wins. I'll certainly be having a Pimms here but i'll be overjoyed. I might even jump up and do embarrassing mum things."

  12. 'I've never had that happen during a match'published at 11:10 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

Andy Murray, in his column for us, had a good old natter with yesterday's opponent Alexander Bublik during the rain deyay.

"He's not an easy guy to play, because he really goes for it. He's definitely a bit different," Murray said.

"I've played well over 600 matches and I don't remember ever discussing a match with my opponent while it's still going on, but that's what happened during the rain delay.

"I asked Bublik what he thought of Centre Court and whether he liked the grass, and we even discussed how many double faults he'd served.

"He's a fun guy and entertaining, which is good for the game."

  13. Will Ward and Edmund feel the heat?published at 11:06 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

It was only a quick practice hit for Alex Ward and Kyle Edmund, who are due on court three at 11:30 BST, but they have just walked past me a good deal sweatier than they were before - it's baking hot in SW19 this morning.

Minella revealed the news in her press conference after the match, which she lost 6-1 6-1.

The world number 82 from Luxembourg is also due to play in the doubles.

  17. Ward and Edmund keeping an eye on each other?published at 10:52 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    Chris Bevan
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

Alex Ward will be sharing a court with British number two Kyle Edmund in an hour or so, and he is not far away from him right now either.

Edmund arrived just after Ward, and is now hitting with his coach on an adjacent court. Awkward? Not really, because they are friends and occasional practice partners anyway - I don't think they have many surprises for each other later.

  18. Ward faces friend Edmundpublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

Alex Ward is not only facing a tough first-round match on court three - he's got a mate at the opposite side of the net, in the form of Kyle Edmund.

Edmund, ranked 50th in the world, struggled at Queen's, where he was knocked out in the first round by Denis Shapovalov, but Ward is aware of the challenge he will pose.

"I know Kyle pretty well," said Ward.

"We've trained together quite a few times, been on a few trips.

"He's a great player and is doing really well at establishing himself, a top-50 player now. I just can't wait to get out there."

Walking to Wimbledon gets the sweat glands going, even in the early part of a balmy south-west London day.

Good job then that Adrien, an enterprising Frenchman living in London, is peeling and squeezing loads of fresh oranges to turn into a refreshing juice for the gasping punters.

Last year he was flogging crepes in the front garden of a detached house near the All England Club.

This year he's taken a gamble on the sunshine coming out to play. With temperatures set to reach almost 30C this week, I reckon he could hit the jackpot.

"How many oranges do I go through each day? About 150," he says. That's some serious citrus.
