Nadal was fiddling with his cut finger between points earlier in that set-winning game, pointing up to his box and seemingly asking for some medical tape.

There was a bit of confusion until Uncle Toni - Rafa's coach - summoned someone younger to leg it downstairs.

Not entirely sure why they've got plasters up there and Rafa hasn't got them in his kit bag...

A nice couple of rallies get the crowd excited.

Forehands are exchanged, and realistically there's only one man coming out on top. It's Mr Nadal.

At 30-30, the Spaniard tries an acrobatic lob over his opponent and it drops just out.

Young goes on to hold - for the first time in the opening game of a set.

A couple of female seeds are in trouble on the outside courts.

American Madison Keys, the 17th seed, is a set down (6-4) to unseeded Italian Camila Girogi on court three, while 13th seed Jelena Ostapenko has work to do after losing the opening set 6-4 against Canada's Francoise Abanda over on court 12.

Serve and volley on a break point down. No, it's not Roger Federer. It's Rafael Nadal.

  5. Game and second set - Nadalpublished at 20:02 British Summer Time 5 July 2017

    Nadal 6-4 6-2 Young*

We're back at deuce when Nadal has to go over to the umpire and ask him for the trainer. The Spaniard has a cut on his finger that needs attending to.

He'll carry on to take the second set in the meantime. No drama.

  6. Young saves two set pointspublished at 19:59 British Summer Time 5 July 2017

    Nadal 6-4 5-2 Young*

After a dodgy challenge on the first point, Young pulls out the tennis tekkers and produces a mid-air backhand volley. That was ballet-like.

It's not enough to stop Nadal, though. Rafa brings up two set points.

Young saves one with a leaping forehand volley and then takes us to deuce with a winner at the net. Lovely save!

And now Nadal goes long. Break point Young!

If you want a chance of winning Wimbledon then you have to spend as little time as possible on the court in the early stages. It is very unlikely you will go all the way if you spend all your energy in the first week.

'C'mon, dude,' wails Young, as he nets again to make it 30-30.

Fear not, Donald. You've got this one. The American holds, leaving Nadal to serve for the set.

    Nadal 6-4 5-1 Young*

Nadal lands his second ace of the match for 30-0, and Young returns past the baseline for 40-0.

A slight over-hit from Rafa brings the score to 40-15 but Young nets and it's another easy hold for the former champion.

A gentle wind is picking up around Centre. My empty water bottle and match notes are trying to escape.

That's not the only gust being felt by a Donald Young. The ball is starting to breeze past him.

Rafa Nadal blasted down his first ace of the match in the previous service game, then backed that up with a couple of winners that whistled past the American's ears.

Donald's backhand is questionable. The rest of his game looks solid, sometimes dangerous even.

But I've never seen Nadal play like this, this aggressive.

    *Nadal 6-4 4-1 Young

Donald Young is trying his best to stop Rafa Nadal snatching his service game. He's saved four break points.

On to a fifth now and the American can only backhand a volley into the net from close range.

He did well to stave off that threat for as long as he did.

  14. game, set and match

Game, set and match - Brenglepublished at 19:44 British Summer Time 5 July 2017

    Brengle 6-1 1-6 6-2

Petra Kvitova's remarkable return to Wimbledon is ended as Madison Brengle holds to win in three sets.

The Czech two-time champion said she had "won her fight" just by being at SW19, having been stabbed by an intruder at her home in December.

Victory in the first round had many wondering whether Kvitova could even go on to win her third title but she struggled in that third set, calling for the trainer, while Brengle's game also caused her plenty of problems.

The American brings up three match points - Kvitova saves the first but Brengle turns defence into attack and draws the error next up.

    Nadal 6-4 3-1 Young*

As Donald Young returns to the court after a drinks break, he looks up at his box and starts shouting - at his mother no less - 'I want to hear you scream for every point'.

I'd be grounded if I said things like that.

His outburst hasn't helped in the slightest. Nadal holds to love.

    *Nadal 6-4 2-1 Young

A little fist pump for Donald Young as he gets off the mark in the second set.

The American has definitely got some tricks in his locker, but he's not been able to make it count when he's on the front foot against the former champion.

    *Brengle 6-1 1-6 5-2 Kvitova

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova is on the verge of a second round loss to American Madison Brengle, who is serving for the match.

The American had never won a singles game at Wimbledon before this year and is ranked 95th in the world. In the deciding set, Kvitova has struggled physically and has also needed medical attention. She's had her wrist assessed and her blood pressure taken.

    Nadal 6-4 2-0 Young*

Young is making some headway on Nadal's serve here at 0-30 but Rafa pulls out a bullet winner to pull a point back, much to the delight of the crowd.

The Spaniard draws level and out-battles Young at the net after a delightful rally to move to 40-30, and he goes on to hold.

If grass is supposed to be Rafa's 'worst' surface then...

After falling to players outside of the top 100 in each of his past three appearances in SW19, Nadal is back.

He landed 78% of his first serves in that first set, helping him to a win percentage of 81% with his opening gambits.

That allowed Young, who scraped through to this match when Denis Istomin retired, to win just SIX receiving points.
