The Australian Open say they came close to implementing the heat rule today but the Wet Bulb Glow temperature fell just short. Now down to 28C, they say. Craig Tiley does say they will be reviewing the rule (as usual) post event.

I'm feeling it a little, I'm sure you are too at 4:00 GMT in the UK, so I dread to think how the players are right now after playing in 39 degree heat.

We're going to pause this page for a little while until the night session begins at 8:00 GMT with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Nick Kyrgios and Rafael Nadal v Damir Dzumhur.

You've got time for a few hours sleep. Be sure to set your alarms.

  7. Edmund reaches last 16published at 03:59 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

The big question now is how much does Kyle Edmund have left. He could well be rushing off for an ice bath.

As Russell Fuller said earlier Edmund will either play world number 76 Andreas Seppi or world number 89 Ivo Karlovic on Sunday.

That experienced pair are yet to start their match this afternoon.

Britain's Kyle Edmund speaking to Eurosport after his win: "Normally in matches you can work things out but the whole of the fifth set the finish line seemed so far away. I just thought one game at a time and thought hold my serve.

"At the end it was physically very demanding and when he hit the ball in the net I was very relieved. He kept slugging it and finally missed it.

On the conditions: "It is not easy. Towards the end the wind died down and we didn't get any fresh air. It is not forgiving. I knew it was tough for him too and kept sticking with it. I knew I didn't want balls to keep coming back so I tried to keep getting balls back and knew he wouldn't like it."

Edmund has the mindset to do well at Grand Slams. He's shown he can do consistently well in them and let's not forget that he'll play either the experienced world number 76 Seppi or Karlovic who turns 39 in February and is number 89.

Kyle Edmund has now equalled his best Grand Slam performance.

It is just the second time that he has reached the last 16 of a Grand Slam.

The Briton slumps in his chair as Basilashvili drags himself off court.

It's testament to his conditioning, training and dedication to the sport to come through this test and win in these brutal conditions. I think that's one of his best wins.

    Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-6 4-6 6-0 7-5 Basilashvili

    What. A. Win.

It was brutal - for the most part cruel - but Kyle Edmund has come from two sets to one down in 39C to reach the last 16 of the Australian Open.

Wow. Double fault from Nikoliz Basilashvili. Kyle Edmund has a match point.

    Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-6 4-6 6-0 6-5 Basilashvili*

I'm not sure how these two will be able to stand after this. Basilashvili starts with an ace but here comes Kyle Edmund!

On the attack he pummels two winners. 15-30. A chance...

    Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-6 4-6 6-0 6-5 Basilashvili

A reminder there is no fifth set tie-break in the Australian Open. This one will keep going on until we get a break of serve.

Edmund clinches another game with a forehand winner that Basilashvili doesn't fancy chasing down. As ever it's an advantage to be serving first in this set. Basilashvili must hold again.

    *Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-6 4-6 6-0 5-5 Basilashvili

Again the crowd cheer Edmund on as he takes the first point but Basilashvili just doesn't give up. He fights back with four points of his own, the last a tame forehand from Kyle Edmund.

Edmund points for his towel. The temperature has now reached 40C. Where are these players getting the energy from? On they go. 5-5 in the decider.

    Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-6 4-6 6-0 5-4 Basilashvili*

No sign of pressure on the shoulders of young Kyle Edmund. From break point down he plays three perfect points and slams the door in the face of Basilashvili.

Kyle Edmund is a game away from one of the wins of his career.

    Danger. Big danger.

This doesn't sound like it came off the string but Basilashvili brings up break point with a forehand winner.

    *Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-6 4-6 6-0 4-4 Basilashvili

Kyle Edmund has had 36 break points in this match but has only taken six. Most of those were in that fourth set bagel were Basilashvili looked less than interested.

He doesn't get a look at one here though. A winner takes Edmund to 30-30 and in with a sniff but some good serving sees Basilashvili through. Still no breaks in the decider.
