  1. Edmund distractedpublished at 10:00 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2018

    *Cilic 6-2 5-5 Edmund

Angry Ed is still on court.

Marin Cilic waits patiently for an Edmund serve. The Briton has stopped to moan about something or someone in the crowd. He continues with a glare to the chair.

"Yes," he yells after a decent bit of defensive work sees him move to 30-15.

But then he double faults for 30-30.

Another argument with the chair umpire ensues. We think it's the big screen that's distracting him...

He manages to ignore the external issues to hold.

Edmund is getting about the court better, and it's making such a difference to his strokes. He can get into position and balance himself. He's not scared about getting into the rallies.

  3. Edmund pushes Cilicpublished at 09:55 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2018

    Cilic 6-2 5-4 Edmund*

The crowd look a bit stunned as Marin Cilic double faults and then hits a loose forehand for 0-30.

Edmund can't make the next point count. He whacks well over the baseline.

Cilic gets lucky when his backhand clips the net and lands in, and it scuppers Edmund.

An ace from Cilic makes it 40-30 and he holds as Edmund goes long.

Cilic only made one out of six first serves in that game. A lucky escape, one might say.

  4. Edmund solid servepublished at 09:50 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2018

    *Cilic 6-2 4-4 Edmund

Kyle Edmund gets the forehand a-swinging for a 30-15 lead.

He throws down a powerful serve which Cilic plummets into the net.

The Croatian sixth seed lands wide on the next point. Another hold for the Briton.

Marin Cilic mixes up his shot choices and finds himself a hold to love.

    Oooh, this is close.

    *Cilic 6-2 3-3 Edmund

Edmund's fourth ace of the match means he's now out-acing Marin Cilic which is quite a feat.

He finds a whipped forehand winner for 30-0. And again for 40-0.

Another ace gives Edmund a love hold.

I can confirm he's still livid about that point in the last game, but hey, it's making him play better so Angry Ed might be here to stay!

Don Wimble‏: Never seen a player win this argument. Edmund needs to just get on with it. Can't let this break his focus.

Come on Kyle, use that anger. He's prowling around the back of the court now!

Let's just say Kyle Edmund is massively fired up for this now.

His pent up anger has been directed at the ball, with a forehand and backhand winner taking him to 15-30.

  12. 'Kyle had to make his point'published at 09:38 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2018

    Jo Durie

He has to make the point because there could be more late calls with someone who has a serve like Cilic. He's stood his ground here and I think that's good.

  13. Edmund fumes at umpirepublished at 09:37 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2018

    Cilic 6-2 2-2 Edmund*

"Get the referee, I'm not having it."

Kyle Edmund is having a big, big moan to chair umpire John Blom.

Cilic's serve is called out and the call came as Edmund hit it. Cilic challenged it, and he's been given the point as it was inside the lines.

Edmund is FUMING. He's in discussions with the tournament referee now. It's not going to be overruled, though.

  15. Edmund underpoweredpublished at 09:34 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2018

    Piers Newbery

For whatever reason, Edmund is averaging 12kph slower on his forehand and 8kph slower on his backhand compared to previous rounds. When your game is based on power, that is a serious difference in pace.

  16. Edmund holdspublished at 09:34 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2018

    *Cilic 6-2 2-2 Edmund

Edmund has the advantage and really decent serve follows, which Cilic can only pop over the baseline.

A good save from the Brit, that.

  17. Edmund saves break pointpublished at 09:33 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2018

    *Cilic 6-2 2-1 Edmund

"NO," Edmund shouts at himself as he flat bats into the net for 15-30.

Cilic goes wide for 30-30 but Edmund nets again. He's coughed up the first break point of the second set.

It's saved with an ace down the middle. Zip! To deuce...

  19. Cilic stays ahead in second setpublished at 09:29 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2018

    Cilic 6-2 2-1 Edmund*

I swear Cilic just nearly sent the net flying with an attempt at a massive first serve. The whole thing bent in the middle!

The Croatian handles Edmund's decent returns to move to 40-15, before the world number 49 gets on the end of a lofted ball at the net and slams it down with vigor.

Edmund can't return the next point on the backhand and Cilic holds.
