    Ramos-Vinolas 3-3 Broady*

There's even more palm tree shadows creeping onto court, which I imagine is highly irritating.

Broady's not quite nailed his first serve yet, and it allows Ramos-Vinolas and his huge forehand to launch a winner beyond him.

A lob from Ramos-Vinolas somehow manages to land on the line and it allows him to win the point. He holds his hand up in apology, but the Spaniard has three break points to play with...

    Ramos-Vinolas 3-3 Broady*

Broady skips forward and goes for the big forehand winner, but this court is slow, and the ball clatters into the top of the net.

Backhand meets backhand for a while before Broady overhits a return, and Ramos-Vinolas speeds his way through a hold.

Leon Smith has a very intense face as he delivers some more advice to Liam Broady, who just grins at him.

The Brits in the crowd get to their feet to applaud him as he makes his way back out.

A big first serve, pushed right into the corner of the court, allows Broady to nip forward and work a winner, and another backhand volley wrong-foots Ramos-Vinolas entirely.

Long return from the Spaniard! Broady holds to 15.

    *Ramos-Vinolas 2-1 Broady

More big hitting, both players camped behind the baseline, and it's Liam Broady that blinks first with a wonky forehand.

Advantage to the Spaniard - ooft, and Broady clonks a lovely backhand cross-court to take it back to deuce!

    *Ramos-Vinolas 2-1 Broady

The first break point comes and goes as Broady, up on tiptoes, works a return over the baseline.

A skiddy return from Albert Ramos-Vinolas, and Broady can't control his return. Deuce!

Nice from Liam Broady, jogging up to the net and passing Albert Ramos-Vinolas with a whippy forehand.

Hello! Broady controls a rally and eventually draws the error out of his opponent, who lashes his backhand out. Two break-back points to the Brit...

I think Liam Broady has started pretty well. That double fault at 30-30 was costly but I think his gameplan is good.

    *Ramos-Vinolas 2-1 Broady

Spain captain Sergi Bruguera, who was as still as statue for those first three games, suddenly bursts into life to give his player a few instructions.

My inability to speak any sort of convincing Spanish means I haven't a clue what he's just said, sadly.

    Ramos-Vinolas 1-1 Broady*

A net cord sits up nicely for Albert Ramos-Vinolas, and he takes a second to readjust before cracking a forehand winner beyond his opponent.

Broady gets on the board with a good second serve, before stonking forehand meets stonking forehand. Big hitting from both players gets them to 30-30.

Oops. Another double fault from Broady - and it's break point, Ramos-Vinolas...

In this situation with someone making their debut, you don't want Britain going down a break straight away. Panic can set in. When you're playing away against someone ranked much higher than you and the crowd are against you, it's very intimidating. Think about your side of the court and what you're going to do.

    Ramos-Vinolas 1-1 Broady*

Up to the net comes Albert Ramos-Vinolas, but Broady whips his wrists and passes him with a forehand for 15-15.

A long rally, and it's Broady who comes out on top as he gets to the net and volleys with his opponent stranded behind the baseline.

Ramos-Vinolas responds with a fine first serve, speared out wide, and he holds as a Broady backhand sails out.

Third time lucky for Liam Broady. He gets to the net and makes the backhand volley this time.

Into the net goes Ramos-Vinolas! Broady looks more than a little chuffed as he makes his way over to Leon Smith, who delivers a few sharp, to the point instructions.

    Ramos-Vinolas 0-0 Broady*

Hm. Up to the net comes Liam Broady but again, his forehand volley finds the foot of the net.

Break point to Ramos-Vinolas - and it's saved emphatically by Broady! He waits for a shank from Ramos-Vinolas to settle, before stepping forward and smashing a winner over.

    Deuce #3.

An ace puts Liam Broady ahead.

Oh, Broady goes cross-court for the big winner, and it just misses! There's no Hawkeye on the clay, so back to deuce we go.
