Smart play from the Russian, leaping high at the net to meet an attempted Johanna Konta lob and patting it into the space vacated by the British number one.

Konta slips as Natalia Vikhlyantseva pops a cross-court winner past her. She's up again, and looks OK.

And now a break point chance for Konta, her first of the match.

But it's saved by Natalia Vikhlyantseva, a wonderful forehand winner down the line after Konta looked to have drawn the Russian out wide.

    C. Harrison 2-4 Nishikori*

Japan's Kei Nishikori is another big name in action on this busy Wimbledon morning.

He was ranked as high as four in the world not too long ago but has slipped down due to injuries like so many of the other top players.

The Japanese player now sits at 28 in the world.

Nishikori leads with an early break in the first set against American Christian Harrison.

    Konta 3-3 Vikhlyantseva*

    Great speed from Johanna Konta!

She does superbly to dig out a winner from an acute angle at the net after Natalia Vikhlyantseva fluffed a return and almost got lucky, watching it bobble over the tape.

A kicking serve puts Konta back in control, before her opponent wraps a forehand into the net.

    *Konta 2-3 Vikhlyantseva

First sign a of a fist-pump from Johanna Konta as she ekes out a winner.

Natalia Vikhlyantseva is not going to be shaken off easily though, the world number 103 taking opportunities when they arise.

Konta pops a groundstroke long and the Russian takes a 15-30 lead.

  9. Konta crouchingpublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

Konta is having to crouch low to deal with some of her Russian opponent’s groundstokes. Ahhhhhs all round court two when the Briton fluffs a shot with the whole court at her mercy.

    *Konta 2-3 Vikhlyantseva

Dipping, whipping, pure power from Johanna Konta from deep and Natalia Vikhlyantseva cannot coax a forehand back on the run.

More baseline punch from Konta, but the 21-year-old Russian responds with an arrow-like drive down the line.

Konta opts for the subtle approach, a drop shot and volley combo, but the British number one sends the killer blow long.

    Vikhlyantseva holds.

    *Del Potro 2-2 Gojowczyk

Juan Martin del Potro is the latest player to take a tumble at SW19.

Arms, legs, racquet all went flying into the air as Del Potro raced to chase down a drop shot and lost his footing. He doesn't look overly happy, but he's back on his feet.

    It's still on serve.

  13. Clarke still in commandpublished at 11:55 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    *Gulbis 2-4 Clarke

It's still a mixed bag from Ernests Gulbis against British number five Jay Clarke. He takes his latest service game with a third ace of the match but then the backhand goes awry to hand Clarke the next game.

Clarke, with cap on and gold chain around his neck, is looking composed. He still has the advantage after that early break.

The serve gets going, Konta relaxes, things falls into place. She gets one or two easy points each service game, which really helps out.

    *Konta 1-2 Vikhlyantseva

Spectators muscle into the stands between the change of ends.

Johanna Konta goes through her pre-serve ritual and then pushes Natalia Vikhlyantseva wide, before following up with a neat backhand winner.

The Russian clubs a return wide, and Konta follows up with an ace of her own. That really zipped off the luscious Wimbledon turf.

    Pffft. A double fault follows.

  17. On serve on court 12published at 11:48 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    Barty 1-1 Voegele*

A bit of early morning arguing over on court 12.

Swiss Stefanie Voegele got an early break against 17th seed Ashleigh Barty, but Barty has broken straight back. Voegele is trying to convince an umpire that an overruled line call was late and distracted her from going through with the shot.

The umpire is having none of it, mind. It's back on serve, and you can watch it here.

Was it so gusty last night that someone's tent blew away?

This tent on the right was bobbing up and down in the sailing lake at Wimbledon Park this morning near the queue (on the left in the distance).

  20. Clarke takes early breakpublished at 11:47 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    Gulbis 1-2 Clarke*

I'm not sure you'll see a worse start to a tennis match at your local club this week.

Ernests Gulbis, who was once ranked 10th in the world, has just blasted four shots miles out of the court to gift the opening game to Jay Clarke. Briton Clarke didn't really have to do an awful lot but the result is that he has broken serve in the opening game of the match.

Latvian Gulbis is certainly a character. He is smiling and patting Clarke on the back as the pair switch ends.

A bit more normality follows. Two holds of serve follow.
