    Edmund v De Minaur

Kyle Edmund rose to a career-high of 17th in the world last week after a strong few weeks on the clay.

He has reached the second round in all of his previous Roland Garros appearances, and made the third round last year before being beaten by South Africa's Kevin Anderson.

Edmund reached his first Tour-level final in Marrakech in April, where he lost to Pablo Andujar, and reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January.

Unfamiliar territory today we're in... it is the first Grand Slam since the 2006 US Open where Andy Murray has not been ranked as Britain's leading men.

Step up Kyle Edmund. Of course, he has done that before when Murray has not played because of injury - most notably when he reached the Australian Open semi-finals in January.

Does the new world number 17, who goes into a Slam as a seed for the first time, feel any added pressure?

"Naturally there is probably more expectation from the outside but it is one of them where I know I’m getting confidence in my game and I know I'm good enough to challenge a lot of players and get good results," he told BBC Radio 5 live earlier this week.

"For instance in Australia there was still an expectation from my side that I wanted to do well, I always go on court to win and perform at a decent high level.

"So in that sense it is not too much difference for me."

Serena Williams is set to play in her first Grand Slam since claiming her 23rd title in Australia 16 months ago.

Her meeting against Czech Kristyna Pliskova is the third match on Philippe-Chatrier.

Before Serena, the current men's champion and absolute clay demon Rafa Nadal is scheduled to finish his match against Italian Simone Bolelli.

Play was suspended yesterday, with Nadal leading 6-4 6-3 0-3.

Former champion Maria Sharapova is up shortly on Suzanne Lenglen, while Juan Martin del Potro, Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber also start their French Open campaigns today.
