Fabio Fognini is having a bit of treatment, his right ankle is being wrapped by the physio.

He almost looks like he's having a chill in the Parisian sunshine, laid out on a mat under an umbrella.

That's the longest exchange we've seen in a while - baseline to baseline, before Fognini shows off his array of strokes with a subtle dink beyond the net.

Edmund screeches towards it, but doesn't have the legs.

Break point, but one that is quickly saved.

    *Edmund 3-6 6-4 2-2 Fognini

Fognini's not having any of that... he wraps a backhand deep and has Edmund skidding across the surface to reach it, but the British number one can only jab it net-bound.

    30-30.

Punchy stuff from Kyle Edmund as he pounds down a couple of bouncers to ease to 30-0.

So we've had new shoes and a new racquet for Fognini in this service game. But eventually he holds.

You feel like the crowd are just waiting for a Fognini racquet smash. Like gig goers wanting to see that one big hit from their chosen artist.

And here it is right on cue. Not quite as meaty as Novak Djokovic's extraordinary tantrum at the opposite end of Lenglen yesterday.

    Deuce.

A Fognini forehand into the net brings with it a racquet smash. You could almost feel that... ouchy.

He'll need a new one, and Lenglen will probably need some new clay to fill in the divot.

    Edmund 3-6 6-4 2-1 Fognini*

Lovely stuff from Kyle Edmund. The 23-year-old drives a backhand down the line and beyond the despairing Fognini.

The next one drops wide. 40-30.

A change of shoes for Fabio Fognini. He tests them out with a scamper towards a Kyle Edmund drop shot, and wraps it into the net from close range.

    15-15.

Fognini is changing shoes here - I don't know why? Kyle has enough on the serve and forehand to frustrate him.

With the Italian, it takes a lot more than talent to win a Grand Slam. But he is a talent and Edmund will have to be on the ball.

It's anybody's game at this stage.

Ooooo... Fognini thinks about slamming his racquet into the clay, but decides against it.

Storm clouds gathering above the lightning bolt-topped Italian.

Fognini lines up a backhand, skips towards it with one leg behind the other like a javelin thrower and then gets his angles all wrong - straight into the tape.

It's Edmund's maths that's out of sorts on the next point, dropping a backhand of his own a long way wide.

    15-15.

Great point, Craig, and as if to highlight it Fognini dons his number one-esque mask with a cracking winner before pulling out the 1000 card with a double fault.

Kyle Edmund rattles down a slightly slower second serve that is popped back beyond him with venom, he follows up by taking a high ball from mid-court and slamming it past Fabio Fognini.

And the Italian is now having a moan about something... 40-15.

Top off, tongue out for Fognini... a fresh shirt, still the same lightning bolt design.

It was certainly a stormy second set from the Italian.
