    Edmund 3-6 0-3 Berdych*

Melbourne Arena is slowly disappearing into the shadows, I'm sure neither player will mind that.

Kyle Edmund is looking lethargic and out of sorts at the moment, can barely string a response to Tomas Berdych's big serve together.

When he does finally test the Czech, Berdych can only poke a stretching backhand into the net - more of that, hey Kyle...

12-time Grand Slam doubles champion on BBC Radio

If this match took place in 2018 then Kyle would have the edge. Berdych was not the same player back then.

  5. Berdych takes double breakpublished at 06:29 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2019

    Edmund 3-6 0-3 Berdych*

Neat passing winner from Kyle Edmund to save the first, but he overcooks the next and it drops long.

Tomas Berdych takes a double break in the second.

    Oh dear.

Kyle Edmund winds up a huge forehand but sends it crashing straight into the tape.

    Two break points Berdych.

    *Edmund 3-6 0-2 Berdych

Kyle Edmund's Australian Open is in danger of slipping away before he's even got started.

The 13th seed is off the pace and watches a Tomas Berdych forehand whistle by as he's rooted to the spot.

    0-30.

    *Edmund 3-6 0-2 Berdych

Edmund can't get to grips with this punchy Berdych serve - the Czech doesn't seem to be suffering from any of those back problems that have blighted him recently today.

He rattles to 40-0 as the British number one shakes his head in disbelief, before thrusting a straightforward baseline stroke into the guts of the net.

Hold to love for the Czech.

Kyle Edmund is in all sorts of bother here.

Tomas Berdych breaks early in the second, just like he did in the first.

    Break point Tomas Berdych.

Work to do for Kyle Edmund if he's to avoid going out in the first round here.

The British number one reached the semi-final last year, of course.

Double faults won't help matters. That's 30-30, and Edmund continues to cut a frustrated figure.

    Ito 5-7 1-6 5-6 Evans

Over on court 19, Britain's Dan Evans is in control of his match against Tatsuma Ito.

The Japanese player will be serving to stay in the match.

  13. Game and first set Berdychpublished at 06:19 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2019

    Edmund 3-6 Berdych

Brilliant from Tomas Berdych, strolling into the net and delicately coaxing a volley into the space vacated by Kyle Edmund to win the first set in 30 minutes.

    Edmund 3-5 Berdych*

Tomas Berdych, serving for the first set. The world number 57 rattles to 30-0 with a fearsome ace down the T line, but is upstaged by the umpire after challenging a call to the baseline.

Oh no! Kyle Edmund thinks a lob is looping out, then suddenly realises it's catching the line and hammers an overhead long in a panicked response.

    Two set points.

Game. Kyle Edmund holds through a mixture of punchy serves and furrowed brows.

    *Edmund 2-5 Berdych

    New balls please...

Kyle Edmund will hope they can give his Australian Open a boost.

The Brit is having a moan about something, think it might be the big screen?!

There's a shadow cast across half the court that probably isn't helping either, Edmund drags a forehand into the sun spot but out of the tramlines.

    30-15.

  17. Postpublished at 06:11 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2019

    *Edmund 2-5 Berdych

Tomas Berdych is cooking. I put it down to his new camouflage outfit - like a racquet-wielding Action Man.

The Czech quickly slaps his way to 40-15 with a well-weighted backhand, and then holds as a furious Kyle Edmund frames one into the Melbourne sky.

He'll serve to stay in the first set.

    Edmund 2-4 Berdych*

Kyle Edmund dusts off that game with a hold - now just to break that formidable Tomas Berdych serve...

  19. Postpublished at 06:08 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2019

    *Edmund 1-4 Berdych

Slicing ace that kicks off the blue surface and away from Tomas Berdych, that'll do for Kyle Edmund.

The Brit is cutting a frustrated figure though as he wraps a baseline stroke into the tape.

    30-30.

  20. Postpublished at 06:05 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2019

    *Edmund 1-4 Berdych

That Tomas Berdych serve is BIG today. Only two points dropped so far, tough ask for Kyle Edmund to get a grip of it.

He can't for the moment, dragging a forehand wide as Berdych holds.
