This time last year, Kyle Edmund arrived in Melbourne ranked just inside the top 50 and with few people talking about him as a potential challenger for the biggest titles.

He left as a Grand Slam semi-finalist.

Just as importantly, the 24-year-old followed up that run with a fine season overall, including winning his first ATP Tour title in Antwerp.

Now the British number one must deal with the pressure of defending a huge amount of ranking points.

  11. No fitness concerns for Edmundpublished at 05:48 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2019

    Edmund v Berdych

Kyle Edmund missed last week's Sydney International with a knee injury but the 24-year-old Yorkshireman insists he has no fitness concerns going into the first Grand Slam of the year.

Czech Berdych, 33, struggled for fitness last season, but showed signs of his recovery by reaching the Qatar Open final last week.

The two-time semi-finalist also has a formidable record in Melbourne, having reached at least the quarter-finals in seven of the past eight years.

"It is a tough draw to play Tomas who was a consistent top-10 player," Edmund said.

"It is a similar feel to drawing Kevin Anderson in the first round last year, but I was in a good place and managed to come through in the fifth set.

"I've been feeling good on the practice courts this week and missing Sydney has been positive for my fitness and my game."

We're going to re-join the fun with British number one Kyle Edmund gearing up for a tricky opening test against Tomas Berdych.

As the 13th seed, Edmund would have hoped for a slightly kinder draw than former top-10 stalwart Berdych, whose ranking has dropped to 57 after back problems saw him miss the second half of last season.

Edmund would love another run like the one that took him to the semi-final last year.

"As soon as you come you think of what happened last year," said Edmund. "It goes very quickly, a year on, coming back here and starting again."

Some of you might be waking up on a cold, wet, drizzly morning in the UK, but over in Australia things are already hotting up both on and off the court.

Temperatures are soaring, as is new British number two Katie Boulter after knocking out Ekaterina Makarova earlier on her Melbourne Park main-draw debut.

Heather Watson and Harriet Dart both crashed out at the first hurdle to tough opposition, but a whole host of Brits are still to come (including some chap named Andy Murray...)

We're going to leave things there for the time being, but we'll be back with you later on today as British number one Kyle Edmund takes to the court, followed by Dan Evans, Cameron Norrie and, of course, Andy Murray.

She has real power. She has the raw game to hurt the top players. And that can give you a real chance. If you consider what a seasoned player Ekaterina Makarova is, that is great credit to Boulter. She handled everything - the conditions, the nerves - it is a huge step in her career.

The 22-year-old proves she can mix it with those who have been there and done it.

The Brit-supporting court 12 erupts as Boulter seals victory with another ferocious forehand.
