    *Edmund 3-6 0-6 3-3 Berdych

Kyle Edmund is showing much more resilience in this set than he managed in the first two.

He sprints into a 30-0 lead before Tomas Berdych catches the Brit out with a deep, well-placed return.

Thumping backhand from Edmund, then a slice off the same side... but that catches the net.

    40-30.

    *Edmund 3-6 0-6 3-3 Berdych

Kyle Edmund's rooted to the spot as Tomas Berdych sells him with a wrong-footer of a forehand winner. The Czech's in superb form, seamlessly rolling through the many strokes in his armoury to tickle in first a deft volley that just creeps over the net and then plucking a thumping winner out of the air at full sprint.

    Easy hold.

Better from Kyle Edmund, his most comfortable service game of the match so far.

Until a double fault at 40-0...

Edmund then leans back to meet a deep Tomas Berdych return and can only fling it long.

The British number one finally polishes off his hold with a passing forehand winner.

    *Edmund 3-6 0-6 2-2 Berdych

Perhaps this was Tomas Berdych's game plan? Deceive Kyle Edmund with his camouflaged outfit, let the Brit think there's just a pair of arms and legs trotting around the other end of the court.

Either way, those limbs are working their magic today as Berdych screeches to a 40-15 lead on serve and then whizzes towards the net to show off his delicate side with a deft volleyed winner.

It's seriously hot out there, Kyle Edmund's jersey would be better suited at a wet t-shirt competition than on one of Melbourne's show courts... he's drenched.

The Brit grunts his way to 40-15 with his second ace of the match, but Tomas Berdych digs out a splendid winner after selling Edmund with the eyes.

No bother, the 13th seed holds.

Tomas Berdych's reply? Corker of an ace down the middle.

Edmund can't handle the Czech's pace when that first serve finds its target. Another ace gives Berdych the hold.

Tomas Berdych almost wipes out a line judge with a zinger of a serve, but it's long and Kyle Edmund pounces on the Czech's second serve with a thundering forehand winner.

Edmund is looking more lively now, and stings a backhand down the line to make it 15-30.

Right, it's got to happen now for Kyle Edmund or the first Grand Slam of the year will have passed him by quicker than you can say "British number one..."

The 13th seed scrambles his way to 40-15, and holds serve after Tomas Berdych punches long.

    Mark Woodforde

You have to understand the weight on Edmund's shoulders as a defending semi-finalist. I've been keeping an eye on Berdych - there's a spring in his step.

Edmund looks a little heavy - it's almost a role reversal because Berdych was looking the same last year.

    Edmund 3-6 0-6 Berdych

Kyle Edmund has hit just 10 winners so far and 25 unforced errors, in comparison to 17 winners and six errors by Tomas Berdych.

He hasn't created a single break point on the Czech's serve yet.

And he saves the second, too!

Finally the British number one sticks a couple of points together on Berdych's serve.

But then down comes the hammer, a third set point.

    Edmund 3-6 0-5 Berdych*

Sweeping, slicing backhand from Tomas Berdych swings wide, but he makes amends with a powerful serve off the next point to level things up.

And now they're coming down with serious venom, Kyle Edmund hasn't got an answer.

He trots into the net to slap Edmund one and then the other, before chalking up two set points.

    Mark Woodforde

It was a heck of an effort by Dan Evans.

It's well documented what he's experienced of late.

A massive result financially and ranking-wise.

    Ito 5-7 1-6 6-7 (8-10) Evans

Dan Evans is into the second round!

The Brit all but drops to his knees and punches the air as he converts his third match point to claim victory. What a week he's had - three wins in qualifying and then an opening round win in straight sets.

His reward is a meeting with either Denis Istomin or Roger Federer.

  18. Berdych breaks againpublished at 06:38 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2019

    Edmund 3-6 0-5 Berdych*

Kyle Edmund punches a backhand around his feet long, and that's three breaks of serve for Tomas Berdych in the second set.

Has that superb winner given Kyle Edmund some confidence?

He scrambles to 30-30, but then hammers the tape... maybe not.

    Break point Berdych.

  20. What a shot!published at 06:36 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2019

    *Edmund 3-6 0-4 Berdych

Too much frame on that forehand from Kyle Edmund, a real wrist-rattler as he drags it wide.

To make matters worse, now Berdych is getting his challenges spot on too - Edmund has to retake a serve and ends up double faulting.

    That's better!

A running, sliding, screeching volley at full stretch to make it 15-30, wonderful shot.
