Britain's Heather Watson overcame a tricky opening match against 17-year-old Caty McNally to progress 7-6 (7-3) 6-2.
There were also wins for third seed Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina, Americans Madison Keys and Sofia Kenin and 2014 semi-finalist Simona Halep.
However, the upset of the tournament so far came on court three as 10th seed Aryna Sabalenka was dumped out by Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova.
Meanwhile, defending champion Novak Djokovic saw off Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets, while Stan Wawrinka sailed through along with last year's runner-up Kevin Anderson and Spain's Feliciano Lopez.
