A couple of brief scares for Novak Djokovic in the opening two sets, but he twice came back from being a break down to progress in two hours, three minutes. All smiles now for the Serb as he poses for selfies and signs giant tennis balls on his way to the locker room.

Novak Djokovic challenges the Philipp Kohlschreiber first serve, and has his eye in! That's out.

It gives the world number one the chance to attack the German's second serve, and that's the only invite Djokovic needs. Thwack, that does the trick.

He's through to the second round in straight sets.

A couple of rising stars of the men's game have just taken to the courts - 20-year-old seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas is up against Italy's Thomas Fabbiano on Court 2 - that one is on serve with the Greek 4-3 up in the first set.

And over on No.1 Court, sixth seed Alexander Zverev - who is 22 but has not been past the fourth round here in four previous attempts - is about to get under way against Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic.

Tsitsipas and Zverev are both big hopes for the future, but could this be their year?

Oh, Novak. Stop it. He draws his opponent in before slapping a volleyed winner in the other direction. But Philipp Kohlschreiber has crowd-pleasing shots of his own, dishing out a spoonful of Djokovic's own medicine to leave the Serb helplessly rooted at the net.

    30-30.

Wonderful shot, there was more spin on that Novak Djokovic backhand slice than one of my nan's yarns, wheeling away from a despairing Philipp Kohlschreiber. The world number one holds to love. He's one game away from the second round...

Here's first-round winner Simona Halep: "I'm really happy I could win this match.

"Always the first match of the tournament is going to be difficult. Knew she was playing great. I stayed focused and fought to the end.

On the injury suffered in the first set: "Could be an issue but I hope not. I need treatment now. I slid a little bit and felt a little bit of pain behind the knee and the foot.

"My main goal is to be positive - I today showed I can fight until the end and never give up. If I can continue to do that then I'll be really happy."

  14. Kwon on the comeback trailpublished at 14:58 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

At two sets down against the 10th seed, it would have been easy for 21-year-old South Korean qualifier Soonwoo Kwon to crumble after a determined early effort got him nothing more than a first-set set-point but the world number 125 has stuck to his task against Karen Khachanov, and he has just got his reward.

Kwon saw two set-points come and go at 5-4 in the third set but continued to get back everything the Russian could throw at him and, when his third opportunity came, he made no mistake, coming into the net to seal the set with a smash.

Khachanov still leads 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 4-6 1-1 and has the bigger shots, but he is struggling to impose himself on his opponent.

And that is no mean feat as they are all very comfortable and padded on this court now after a refurb that includes the new roof.

Ooo... Philipp Kohlschreiber opts to leave a Novak Djokovic backhand that's called in, and that could be a very bad decision! That's well in, plump on the line as it picks up chalk on its way through. Deuce. And now Djokovic moves within touching distance of a break, executing the cutest of drop shots to leave the German stranded.
