When Garbine Muguruza lifted the big dish in 2017, she seemed to be the future of the women's game.

Still only 25, she still might be.

But the former champion has come a first-round cropper here, losing to Brazil's world number 121 Beatriz Haddad Maia 4-6 4-6.

Muguruza has only been beyond the fourth round once in her last eight Grand Slams.

  6. Enter Nadalpublished at 16:27 British Summer Time 2 July 2019

    Nadal v Sugita

Huge cheers go up for a firm fan favourite Rafael Nadal.

The Spaniard must think he's got as good a chance of any of top contenders this year.

The thing is he hasn't actually played on grass yet this season.

The third seed should breeze through this first test against Japan's Yuichi Sugita, who has reached the main draw on four occasions.

His best performance? Round two in 2017.

This is a solid effort from a hampered Lloyd Harris, but Roger Federer gets the break and that could be the beginning of the end for the South African.

Rafael Nadal comes in to this off the back of his 12th French Open title and he hasn't played a grass tournament so it'll be interesting to see how he gets on today because he has struggled a little bit in round one at Wimbledon the past few years.

It was a very creditable start for Johanna Konta. And it might be the start of something big for her. She goes through to round two having taken care of a difficult opponent.

  17. Wimbledon returns and watching royaltypublished at 16:16 British Summer Time 2 July 2019

Kyle Edmund and Heather Watson got the party started yesterday, and we now have six British players into the second round after Dan Evans, Harriet Dart, Cameron Norrie and Johanna Konta joined them today - Jay Clarke and Paul Jubb could make it a dizzy eight.

Evans, returning to the Wimbledon main draw after a two-year absence: "It's always good to come back to Wimbledon any time of the year, but especially at the Championships.

"I didn't think I played so good, but got the win. It's great that everybody came out to watch. The crowd is always great here. I'm just very happy, you know, to be welcomed back so well.

"Obviously been away for a little bit from my own doing, so it's good to be back."

Dart, who was watched by the Duchess of Cambridge: "I was aware (she was there). The chair umpire mentioned it before the coin toss. It's pretty cool to have royalty watching you.

"Such a privilege for me for her to get to see me play. It's pretty surreal. Hopefully she'll come to many more of my matches."

Johanna Konta speaking to BBC Two: "It was very tough, I don't think either of us found our feet for a while, I was really pleased to find a way through. I feel I am building through the season and reading the game and expressing myself better on court. I was not playing the best tennis, but I competed as best I could.

On the prospect of playing Katerina Siniakova: "It will be a very tough match for me. She beat Naomi in Paris and is a feisty competitor and hits big."
