Watching a one-handed backhand is lovely. Watching two of them at either side of the net is pure poetry.

Dan Evans hasn’t found his inner William Blake yet, though.

The British men’s number one rebukes himself with an angry shout when he pushes one wide into the tramlines on the way to that Lajovic hold.

    *Boulter 6-4 2-3 Sabalenka

That's well played by the second seed, pounding towards the net and looping a backhand volley on to the baseline. But Aryna Sabalenka is struggling to pick anything below the cord line and edges into one into the net. No bother, the 23-year-old winds down an ace to hold.

    Evans 2-2 Lajovic*

    Boris Becker
Three-time Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

Dan Evans is still finding his balance here, especially on the forehand side. His footwork isn't there yet - where we've seen it before - and Lajovic is exploiting that.

Evo winces as he gifts a break point to Lajovic with a long forehand, then after saving it he tumbles on that treacherous baseline to set up another for the Serb.

    “Alright Dan?” asks the umpire.

    “Yeah.”

Some nervous murmurs from the Court One crowd, which isn’t surprising after the surface shenanigans over the past 48 hours. He’s fine.

    Boulter 6-4 2-2 Sabalenka*

A Katie Boulter serve comes back with interest but the world number 219 is equal to it and uses the pace to lash a forehand back, with Aryna Sabalenka miscuing into the tape.

Boulter remains unfazed, holding from the baseline with a backhand that the second seed awkwardly volleys into the net.

Sabalenka's misjudging a lot of balls. I think it's the stress that she's under.

She's been very uncomfortable, and Boulter is doing an excellent job of continuing to bear down.

    *Evans 2-1 Lajovic

    Boris Becker
Three-time Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

Normally Lajovic is one of the quickest players out there, but right now I don't see him moving quickly or softly. Maybe he's feeling the effects of the first round still.

    *Evans 2-1 Lajovic

    Jonathan Jurejko
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

A smattering of applause greets the mistake from Lajovic which sets up a break point for Evans. Definitely a ‘we want to applaud but not too much because we don’t want to offend the opponent’ kind of vibe.

Evans is never one to hold back, though. The Brummie pierces the relative serenity with a massive roar of ‘Come on!’ when the next crucial point goes his way.

    * Evans 2-1 Lajovic

Dan Evans starts well with a quick break of Lajovic's serve before the first sit-down.

    *Boulter 6-4 1-2 Sabalenka

Another good challenge from Aryna Sabalenka, who spots that her serve clipped the line and Hawk Eye turns the decision into ace. The second seed holds.

    Boulter 6-4 1-1 Sabalenka*

Aryna Sabalenka is getting a little irritated and Katie Boulter feeds on that with a well-placed return that forces the second seed to go long.

Sabalenka cuts a drop shot over the tape but it sits up for Boulter and she sweeps away a forehand winner. 30-30.

Joe: Katie Boulter looking really good against Sabalenka. Relaxed, playing well and taking the first set confidently. The number 2 seed very agitated.

    Boulter 6-4 1-1 Sabalenka*

Katie Boulter leaks a backhand wide and that's 0-30. The Brit is yet to win a point in this second set.

She does on the next, in superb style... Boulter disguises a backhand and nonchalantly lobs it over Aryna Sabalenka as the Belarusian strides towards the tape.

And now the wildcard is showing off her full repertoire, it's not the best drop shot and the second seed gets there, but can only jab into the tape. 40-30. And Boulter holds with a casual volleyed winner.

Big, big hold from 0-30 down.

    Evans 1-1 Lajovic*

    Jonathan Jurejko

Bright and breezy start from Dusan Lajovic in a hold to love.

Backed by an enthusiastic crowd on Court One, Evans looks set to do the same before a double fault delays him.

Only briefly though. A thumping serve can only be batted back long from the Serb.

    *Boulter 6-4 0-1 Sabalenka

An "oooh" from the Centre Court crowd but Katie Boulter's ambitious forehand falls just wide.

Aryna Sabalenka thunders down a couple of big second serves and then an even bigger first to hold to love and get off the mark in the second set.

That's so well played from Boulter, so smart to use that backhand slice to get Sabalenka to move into an awkward position. She got bitten at times in this set by the pace of Sabalenka, but in the end she got the set in good fashion.

That first serve, too... she's got really good pace for someone ranked at over 200 in the world!
