    Federer 2-2 Sonego*

"Out!" is the cry as a backhand from Sonego is adjudged to have gone long.

Sonego challenges, Fed looks like he thinks it's in - and it is.

Replay the point. Break point, Federer.

Indeed it is breezy on Centre Court. And cold. Blazers and hoodies all round. No wonder Fed came out in his pristine, vintage track top.

The engines of both players aren't quite warmed up, either. Couple of shanks from both sides of the net lead to gasps.

    Federer 2-2 Sonego*

For the second time, Federer approaches the net and fluffs his lines, this time snatching a forehand into the net tape.

He's already made five unforced errors, compared to zero from Lorenzo Sonego.

Sonego unfurls a shank of his own for 40-15 before Federer finally finds a bit of rhythm, sending his opponent from side to side before zipping a winner beyond him.

Hello. Out of nowhere, we're at deuce as Sonego goes down the line and misses.

  5. Game and third set - Zverevpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

    Auger-Aliassime 6-4 7-6 (8-6) 3-6 Zverev

Fourth seed Alexander Zverev has never made the quarter-finals of Wimbledon but has kept his hopes alive of doing so this year.

He lost the opening two sets, the second via a tie-break, but he's just scooped the third and is hoping this is the start of a memorable fightback.

    *Medvedev 6-2 6-7 (2-7) 4-2 Hurkacz

A formidable response from second seed Daniil Medvedev to losing that second-set tie-break as he gets himself in front in the third set with early an break. Hubert Hurkacz holds his serve on the sixth game, but only just.

    Federer 2-2 Sonego*

Nice. Sonego unleashes into the corner of the court to pop a winner past Federer.

Federer burns a challenge on the shot before a horrid shank of a forehand sends him 15-30 down. It looks like a noise from the crowd distracted Federer as he tried to take the ball out of the air.

A potentially sticky situation at 30-30 is worked out of by Federer, holding as Sonego slaps a forehand low into the net.

Few gasps as a champagne bottle pops in the stands behind where Sonego is serving. Cork hits tin roof and creates a stir.

Not for Sonego who remains unmoved before whacking down the ace. The ball travelled at about the same velocity as the cork.

It looks a bit breezy out on Centre Court, as Federer aims a backhand down the line and spears it wide.

  10. Zverev gets the breakpublished at 17:46 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

    Auger-Aliassime 6-4 7-6 (8-6) 2-4 Zverev*

Over on Court One in the match between Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alexander Zverev, they are in the third set, with Auger-Aliassime two sets up.

However, Zverev is a break up in the third.

Britain's Emma Raducanu is next on that court, but she may be waiting a while.

    Federer 1-1 Sonego*

Roger Federer gets his service game rumbling with back-to-back strikes out wide that Lorenzo Sonego can't return.

A fluffed volley is the only error as the Swiss wraps up his own hold to 15.

Ensuring you get that all-important snap of the great man on Centre is of paramount importance.

“Get one of me with Roger in the background,” one of many excited fans instructs his mate.

    *Medvedev 6-2 6-7 (2-7) Hurkacz

Hubert Hurkacz has hauled himself back into this one against the Russian number two seed.

The Pole kept his nerve during a second-set tie-break, teeing up set point with a forehand smash on his own serve before Medvedev fluffed a return.

A hum of excitement inside Centre Court as we wait for Lorenzo Sonego. Oh, and Roger Federer.

Goes without saying that the love and affection for the Swiss here is unbridled.

And you feel the fans who are here every time the 39-year-old plays now are just thinking: "Is it? Could it be?"

Gulp, the final time we see the eight-time champion here? You never know.

    Federer v Sonego

Roger Federer leads their head-to-head 1-0, having beaten the Italian at Roland Garros two years ago.

However, off the court, Sonego has done something that, to my knowledge, Federer never has - released a song.

He and his childhood friend AlterEdo collaborated to produce a reggaeton track, ‘Un Solo Secondo’, last month.

"We always sang a lot growing up, so to do something helped me not focus on tennis all the time," he said.

"I like dancing and I listen to music all the time before matches.”

Lorenzo Sonego, by contrast, is into the last of 16 for the first time at Wimbledon, having lost in the first round in 2018 and 2019.

He has had a good build-up to the tournament, though, finishing as runner-up in Eastbourne the week before the Slam began.

His first ATP Tour title also came on grass in Turkey two years ago.

    Federer v Sonego

If you don't know all about Roger Federer's enduring love affair with Wimbledon, then you're in the wrong place.

This is the 18th time that the Swiss great has reached the second week at Wimbledon.

He looked out of sorts in his opener against Adrian Mannarino but has grown into the week, besting Richard Gasquet and Britain's Cam Norrie en route to the last 16.
